A paragon producer of Napa Valley Sangiovese-based blends, Bacio Divino’s reputation of excellence leads with exceptional fruit, expert winemaking, and perseverance. Claus & Diane Janzen created Pazzo in 1999 as a sister label to Bacio Divino to appeal to a broader audience of wine lovers. Pazzo means crazy in Italian, and at around $30, the 2018 release is a crazy-good value. 
 
Bacio Divino has a history of producing high-scoring wines. Because of that, they have access to some of the outstanding vineyards in Napa Valley, including Beckstoffer Heritage sites in Oakville and Rutherford and Sangiovese on Atlas Peak. Pazzo comes from a collection of unnamed sites and includes grapes from their Estate vineyard.
 
Winemaker Kirk Venge built the 2018 Pazzo with 38% Sangiovese and 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and he tied them together with Syrah and Petite Sirah. The 2018 vintage produced powerful fruit with incredible intensity. This vintage is like a bistro-wine on steroids, and you’ll thank me later once you taste it.

Eight Years in the Desert represents Orin Swift’s full-circle, which began with two tons of Zinfandel in 1998. In 2000, the Zinfandel wasn’t great as a single-varietal, so Dave Phinney, Orin Swift founder, created a blend and produced the inaugural vintage of The Prisoner, which he continued to make for the following eight vintages before selling The Prisoner brand. Eight Years in the Desert’s name references his eight-year non-compete agreement where Orin Swift couldn’t produce Zinfandel Blends, and lucky for us, they’ve now escaped those bounds. 
 
Calling on a vast collection of premier vineyards spanning California’s most ideal growing regions, 8 Years in the Desert is premeditatively crafted in a bold, approachable style, bearing delectable complexity and seductive fruits. 
 
Creatively, beginning in 2017, each sequential vintage of this wine reveals a new label that will continue for eight vintages. The 2019 release is centered around Zinfandel and magnified by Petite Sirah and Syrah, aged eight months in French and American oak.

“In 2018 climatic conditions were perfect up on Spring Mountain. This Cabernet is evidence of that. Fresh blackberry, anise and mocha are the first things apparent on the nose followed by cola, acai berry and menthol. This is a silky lush wine with layers of dark chocolate, cedar and freshly ground coffee. The tannins are chiefly present, being round pleasing chalky tannins with firm mountain acid balancing them out. The finish is chocolate covered plum. Maremma is Tuscany’s newest DOC; Located South of Bolgheri and extending to the Tuscan Coast, the region’s Mediterranean climate, significant diurnal temperature shifts, and well-drained sandy clay loam soils produce remarkable fruit. Paragons Brancaia and Fattoria Le Pupille have set a precedence of quality in Maremma, with high 90s scores and multiple features on Top 100 lists. Still, the cost of land and production is lower than neighboring Bolgheri and Montalcino, so there are some incredible values, case in point this stunning 91 point Super Tuscan at just $25. 
 
Podere La Pace’s seven hectares of organically vineyards are heavily influenced by the Gulf of Follonica and Calcareous and clayey soils. The small size of their Estate allows their team the opportunity to farm each vine individually, without compromise, and with the strictest quality standards. 
 
This wine is named Pittoresco for the temperament of the sculptor and painter Marianita Valdinoci. The 2017 vintage was sculpted with Merlot and Cabernet Franc and formed to beautifully express the fresh fruit, depth, and energy.
