20121 Hanzell Pinot Noir Sebella Sonoma Coast
Hanzell Vineyards is a historic Sonoma property planted in 1953 after the founder, James D. Zellerbach, spent several years in Burgundy, falling in love with the region’s style, techniques, and wine culture. The De Brye family acquired the estate in 1975, focusing on sustainability and maintaining the original, holistic farming approach.

The Sebella Pinot Noir celebrates this site and soil selection and sources fruit from like-minded partner growers in the Sonoma Coast AVA. The 2021 Sebella was aged for ten months in 100% neutral French oak to maintain a fresh coastal charm, complex fruit intensity, and depth, emulating the estate wines for a third of the price.

“The Hanzell 2021 Sebella Pinot Noir opens with lilacs, fresh red cherry, and plum accented by savory spice, sweet tobacco, and a sea shell minerality. The wine has a light to medium body and flavors of pomegranate, cranberry, blood orange, and cinnamon. The bright, playful character is in a delicate balance with soft tannins, ready to drink now or lay down for a few years.”

Founded in 1953 with a passion for traditional Burgundian-style, low intervention winemaking that naturally expresses the purity of the fruit and the terroir, Hanzell is a paragon in this style domestically. The current owners, the de Brye family, and winemaker Michael McNeill dedicate themselves to preserving this natural approach that’s made Hanzell a reference standard for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay production.

Hanzell “Sebella” Pinot Noir is blended from specially selected vineyard sites on the Sonoma Coast, providing the depth, complexity, and age-worthiness of Hanzell’s estate wines for a fraction of the cost. The wine is primarily aged in neutral barrels, preserving wine’s fresh fruit character and spice that can be enjoyed now or cellared for a few years to develop the classic savory and earthy notes of a mature Pinot Noir.

Hanzell’s winemaking technique is simple; to nurture the vines and vinify without compromising the distinct qualities Mother Nature provides. This natural approach resulted in Hanzell becoming a reference standard for producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with uncanny longevity and remarkable balance. They’ve been the home of great innovation and invention in winemaking for more than a half-century, and their Sebella Pinot Noir is crafted with the same exacting standards as their top Estate wines, offering substantial value at around 1/3 the cost.

Marked by their refreshing acidity, dynamic complexity, succulent fruits, and perfect balance, Hanzell’s Pinot Noirs illuminate each vineyard’s unique personality and those that farm it. The winemaking team ages this Pinot in primarily neutral oak barrels, preserving the most natural essence of the fruit.

2018 was a record vintage for Sonoma County Pinot Noir, described the Wine Spectator as, “Nearly perfect conditions; full-flavored wines backed by crisp acidity.” Ideal conditions resulted in Hanzell’s latest harvest since 2011, resulting in spectacular flavor development.

“Robust in firm, integrated tannin, this wine is textured, lengthy and complex. Tangy red cherry, strawberry and pomegranate wrap around punchy acidity and structure with a stone-like minerality and elements of dried herb, cardamom and white pepper beckoning and developing in the glass.”

“An elegant, burnished version, with lively acidity backing the flavors of plum compote and dried cherry, featuring minerally accents. Cedar and spice details show on the finish. Drink now through 2024.”
