Baldacci crafts their Carneros Pinot Noir in a style that’s marked by concentrated fruit, intriguing textures, and palpable sense of place. The wine arose from Baldacci’s Estate Vineyard in Carneros, which is farmed by Josh Clark, one of wine country’s most sought after viticulturists whose clients include icons like Outpost, Hourglass, and Kinsella to list a few.
 
Michael Baldacci works closely with Ricardo Herrera to craft balanced wines with a sense of place and tangible value. Ricardo gained invaluable experience over the years at icons Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Dominus, and Screaming Eagle.
 
The Baldacci team is steadfast in producing wines that tell a story of their origins and vintage. They achieve this through highly-skilled vineyard management, top-level winemaking, and timely choices made during each step of the process. The results speak for themselves, and at this price, a single case may not be enough.

“Our motto is no whimpy Pinot Noir! I approach this varietal as a lighter, yet sturdy red wine from our portfolio. We work towards a balanced fruit load, per vine, in the vineyard. We use our clones to create nuance and texture in the final wine. There is nothing formulaic about Pinot Noir. It is much more challenging to produce than Cabernet Sauvignon. We strive for a fruit forward expression that is more dark rather than red berry. We de-stem everything and cold soak for no more than 3 days to achieve a color and tannin profile that is more structured. Everything is fermented in open top, small volume tanks with daily punch downs until dry. We use 40% new French oak to marry our fruit with the spice from the wood.”

Napa Valley Grower-of-the-Year for 2020 Larry Hyde of Hyde Vineyard produces powerfully expressive, profound fruit, which is why he’s attracted many of California’s top producers, including Paul Hobbs, Aubert, Kistler, and DuMOL, to make wine from his vineyard. Larry planted the vineyard in the heart of Carneros in 1979, and in 2009 he decided to craft wine under his own label. Larry created this one from some of the best blocks in the vineyard, and this 2015 Estate Pinot is massive but delivers the regal elegance you’d expect from a top Pinot Noir producer. 
 
Larry and his team continually strive to produce the best wine possible from the Estate, and in doing so, they aren’t afraid to take risks. Much of his success resulted from Larry’s experimenting with new clones and planting methods. 
 
Hyde Vineyard benefits from cooling influences from the Pacific Ocean and the San Pablo Bay that funnel through the Coastal Mountain ranges and allow the grapes a long growing season. These geographical conditions keep Carneros cool enough to maintain acidity and structure in the grapes. Winemaker Mark Jessup built the foundation of J Gregory winery upon a core of small family growers that allow him to select from a broad spectrum of fruit profiles. For his Chardonnay, Mark chose Tony and Jo Ann Truchard’s Vineyard in Carneros, which they’ve family farmed for the last 40 years. Truchard is a noble source revered for producing opulent, expressive fruit. Wineries like Far Niente and Nickel and Nickel have sourced grapes there for years. J Gregory’s Chardonnay is stunning at the winery’s $54 price, but at our price, there aren’t enough superlatives to describe it. 
 
Mark produces his Chardonnay in a balanced and highly-detailed style loaded with tropical fruits, organic honey, and stoney minerals. He ferments in a combination of French oak and stainless steel, which creates an exciting tension on the palate that’s divine.  
 
Mark Jessup is a veteran winemaker that was part of the original winemaking team at OPUS ONE from 1979 through 1987. After OPUS, he chose to pursue his dream of building a winery of his own. He produces just 200 cases of this remarkable Carneros Chardonnay, and I hope you try it.

Winemaker Jed Steele has an impressive 50 years of winemaking experience, which began in the cellar at Stony Hill in 1968 after getting his enology degree at UC Davis. It’s taken him all over the Golden State, and he’s worked closely with grape-growers across California throughout that time. Jed settled on Sangiacomo’s Green Acres Vineyard to craft his first Pinot Noir under his namesake. Green Acres was also the Sangiacomo’s first vineyard, which they planted in 1969, and it’s their most sought-after with the greatest number of Sangiacomo-designated wines produced from it. Wines average around $50 from this site, so at $24, it’s a steal. 
 
One might describe Steele’s winemaking approach as minimalistic, and they use a light-handed method that better highlights the wines’ natural aromas and flavor characteristics. They transfer wine by gravity wherever possible and use native yeasts and natural fermentation during the process. 
 
They fashioned the 2016 Green Acres Pinot Noir from 30-year-old vines that produced berries with incredible flavor intensity. The wine spent 16 months in barrel, and now time in the bottle has further developed the remarkable depth and finely detailed flavors in this very special Pinot.

At the winery, grapes are whole-cluster pressed and barrel fermented and inoculated with a yeast strain chosen for its ability to ferment slowly and not generate much heat, which he believes is critical in preserving aromatics and adding complexity. The 2017 vintage intertwines fruit from the Truchard Vineyard, which lies just up the hill from Lee Hudson’s Vineyard, as well as the Poseidon Vineyard, which sits directly on the Napa Valley Marina. The Truchard block sits between Far Niente and Nickel and Nickle’s rows and contributes the incredibly opulent and expressive fruit. 
 
The Poseidon Vineyard is planted in clay soils and contributes an electric acidity that lifts the richer fruit from Truchard. It’s the power and muscle behind the pure and delicious Truchard fruit. After dominating one varietal for more than a decade, the natural progression is to begin a new challenge and conquer that too. Jayson Woodbridge did just that. His Hundred Acre Cabernets reign as one of the top Cult wines in Napa for over a decade, and choosing Pinot Noir as a challenge, he sourced from the iconic Stanly Ranch Vineyard in Carneros. The 2015 vintage is loaded with concentrated cherry fruit, wild rhubarb, and subtle spice, and with a 95 Point Score from Tasting Panel Magazine, now is the perfect time to try it.  
 
Judge Stanly planted the original Stanly Ranch Vineyard in the 1800s, but since being replanted in 2001, it’s been a source for COHO, Saintsbury, and others. The well-drained Haire-loam soils, rolling hills, and coastal influences are ideal for ripening Pinot Noir to the pinnacle of perfection. 
 
Cherry Pie made the 2015 vintage in a dense style, layered with seductive red fruits, intriguing spices, and subtle floral notes. Each small-block was micro-lot fermented to isolate the individual flavors and aromas, and the wine is aged sur lie for the entire process, which contributes to the depth of flavor.
