2015 Walter Hansel Chardonnays

WALTER HANSEL

2015 CHARDONNAYS
CAHILL LANE | NORTH SLOPE | CUVEE ALYCE

Each time I share a bottle of Walter Hansel Chardonnay, I get an unequivocal feeling that I’ve under-paid for it, because the wine inside the glass mimics Chardonnays at a significantly higher price.  When the winery comes up in a conversation, it’s very easy to reminisce about how they’re a model of consistency, and how their wines continually outshine the vast majority in their category.  Then comes the reviews, which always shine.  Robert Parker writes that they’re “… consistently terrific wines… realistically priced… consumers couldn’t have a better friend than proprietor Stephen Hansel.”  Their 2015 Chardonnays are brilliantly detailed, profound and offer a glaring sense of value with every sip.  I strongly recommend stocking up, because there’s never enough to meet demand.

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate: “The 2015 season resulted in tiny clusters and small berries with production levels off by a minimum of 25%. The following 2015s will be bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2015 Chardonnay The North Slope is a relatively small parcel planted on the sandy, loamy, Goldridge soils. This wine has a light greenish-gold color, a beautiful nose of nectarine, white peach and pineapple followed by a sexy, broad, savory full-bodied mouthfeel with an almost exotic fruit character. This is heady stuff and concentrated as most 2015s are. It should drink nicely for 7-8 years.94-96 Points

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate:The 2015 Chardonnay Cahill Lane is made from 100% Old Wente clone and planted in one of the few areas of his vineyard that has adobe-clay soil intermixed with sandy Goldridge material. The yields tend to be relatively large, so Stephen Hansel crop-thinned by at least 30%. The result is a big, beautiful wine that reminds me of a Corton-Charlemagne. Plenty of deep, poached pear, white peach, nectarine, tangerine oil and caramelized citrus are all present in ths wine that shows virtually no oak, full body and loads of texture. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.” 91-94 Points

If you’ve ever wondered if a winemakers experience could manifest itself directly into the flavors, profound complexity and vivid characteristics in a wine, just try one of David Ramey’s Single Vineyard Chardonnays… David is one of the great pioneers in the California wine industry, having helped put many iconic wineries on the map, including Dominus, Rudd and Jericho Canyon.  His first vintage of Chardonnay was at Simi Winery in 1980 and he’s taken everything that he’s learned along the way and poured it into his own label Ramey Wine Cellars which he started in 1996.  His single vineyard selection of Chardonnays offer Grand-Cru level complexity and they have the scores to back it up.  2014 is the final vintage of his Platt Vineyard designate Chardonnay and with a stellar 95 Point score from Robert Parker, don’t hesitate to secure yours…

Emerging from the cool and wind-swept Platt Vineyard, located within a few miles from the Pacific Ocean, this absolutely brilliant expression of cool climate Chardonnay was aged for 19 months in François Frères barrels and bottled without filtration.  Bearing a concentrated core of green orchard fruits interwoven with  veins of rocky minerals, tangerine oil and nutmeg, the wine’s stunning finish goes on and on and on, which is unlike the amount of this wine available, which certainly won’t last…

Winery Notes: Orange zest, white flower, sweet sage and hay aromas yield to softer peach and apricot. The palate is full of energy and vigor with clear-cut fruit intensity and savory character. Ripe stone fruits dominate with an underscore of oatmeal and marzipan. Texture builds with a core of old vine extract balanced with vibrant lime and oyster shell freshness. The finish is long, cleansing, and refined. Drink between 2018 and 2022.”

2016 Anthill Farms Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

2016 PINOT NOIR
SONOMA COAST

I’ll always remember Anthill Farms as the micro-produced Pinot Noir that was kept hidden behind the counter at The Wine Shop. It was so completely under-the-radar that unless you overheard a conversation, or came across some inside information, most people wouldn’t have known it existed.  The scarcity of this brand hasn’t changed much since then.  Their first vintage in 2004 was just 8 1/2 barrels and now they produce around a dozen small-lot Pinot Noirs and a Chardonnay.  The founders all met while working in the cellar at Williams-Selyem winery and they’ve been able to limit the brands exposure and produce absolutely brilliant wines.  At $39.99 a bottle, don’t let this one scurry away.

Created from two of the coolest sites in the Sonoma Coast AVA, the first of which comes from the edge of the Petaluma Gap, and the second from a Ridge near the Pacific Ocean.  While both locations are geographically distinct, they’re also linked by the direct influence of the Pacific’s cool, marine air. Both vineyards give the grapes a long, cool hang-time so they can develop profound flavors, but with enough acidity to keep them lively and fresh.  If you love tiny production Pinot Noirs that won’t be found in your neighbors cellar, this one’s for you…

2017 Black Pines Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
There can only be one Best Ever value Pinot Noir, and for me, Black Pine has owned that title for years.  One taste of the new 2017 and you’ll know why…  It delivers outstanding weight, balance and a stunning presence on the palate, then opens up to a tapestry of vivid dark berries, candied plum, caramelized cherries, dried rose and hints of clove. There’s one simple reason why it’s constantly re-ordered and it’s because it truly drinks like a Pinot Noir that should be about double the price.

Brought to life by Drew Huffine, whose experience includes working with many elite Pinot Noir producers including Kosta Browne, DuMOL, Auteur, Copain and Donum, the 2017 was conceived from carefully chosen vineyards located in the Petaluma Gap, Russian River and Sonoma Coast.  If you’ve tasted any of the earlier vintages of Black Pine, you already know what to expect… This is yet another big score from a winery that we adore.

SONOMA COUNTY

If you’ve ever wondered if California’s most Iconic Pinot Noir could get any better, you’ll find your answer in their 2013 Sonoma County…  Some of the greatest wines in the world reward patience, and this is one that already has. Tasting it now must feel similar to winning the lottery, twice…  Once when you were able to acquire this sought-after wine, and a second time when you discover that it’s developed into something far greater than you ever imagined.  I recommend sitting down before tasting it because the perfume alone will knock you off your feet, as wild raspberries, holiday spices, plum and black tea intertwine in perfect detail.   We bought every bottle we could after tasting this wine and we’re thrilled to feature it by the glass.

With their inaugural vintage in 1982, Williams-Selyem became a reference-standard for high-quality domestic Pinot Noir.  They made history in 2007 when Wine Enthusiast awarded their Litton Estate Pinot a perfect 100 Points…  This was the first Pinot Noir in North America to earn 100 points score from any major wine publication.  Forged from iconic sites including Rochioli, Bucher and Lone Oak Vineyards, the 2013 delights your senses with vivid red fruits and finely detailed flavors that overlay in layers across your palate.

A name that rings synonymous with world-class Pinot Noir is undoubtably Bob Cabral.  Cementing his place in Pinot Noir history while winemaker at Williams Selyem, Bob crafted the 2007 Litton Estate Pinot which Wine Enthusiast awarded a perfect 100 Point Score.  This was the first Pinot Noir in North America to earn 100 point score from any major wine publication.  After nearly two decades at Williams Selyem, Bob is now the winemaker at a new winery, owned by Bill Price, and they’re beginning to make some serious waves in the Pinot Noir world. Bill Price owns some of California’s most iconic vineyards, including Gap’s Crown and Durell Vineyards which are both ingredients in this brilliant Pinot Noir.

Striking, penetrating, focused and surreal immediately come to mind when tasting this 2015 Pinot Noir.  The PFV Estate Pinot comes from a combination of four distinctly different sites including Gap’s Crown, Walala, Dupont and Durrell.  Expertly guided from grape to bottle by one of California’s most accomplished Pinot Noir makers, you won’t want to wait for the scores to come out on the 2015, because it’ll be too late…

After dominating one varietal for nearly two decades as winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars, the natural progression is to start a new challenge, create something fresh, then conquer that too… Ehren Jordan’s viticultural training in France greatly influenced his farming and winemaking choices, which are evident in this sensational Sonoma Coast Chardonnay.

Utilizing fruit from Keefer Ranch, Olivet and Flood Gate Vineyards, the 2015 washes over your palate with blissful intrigue as flavors linger on the palate with stunning length.  This Chardonnay romances your palate, cultivating feelings you didn’t think were possible in a white wine…

Some say that variety is the spice of life, and that statement certainly holds true in Fallia’s Sonoma Coast Chardonnay.  Aged in a mix of concrete egg, french oak and stainless steel, the 2015 is bright and brilliantly complex.  A Chardonnay this great won’t be “on the market” for long.  We think you’ll FAiLLa in love with it, just like we did…

2015 Crossbarn Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir
The short-list of the world’s top consulting winemakers is small, and many would argue that Paul Hobbs should be at the top.  To me, the most clear-cut reason for him being there is simply that people love his wines…  Forbes calls Paul the Steve Jobs of wine, referencing his ardent exactitude of winemaking and he’s clearly one of the most innovative and gifted winemakers.  The Forbes article also notes, that Hobbs was twice named Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker.  While we offer many wines that Paul Hobbs touches, we don’t often have the opportunity to feature one of his own… This wine, with three 90-92 point reviews, is an excellent introduction to the wines of Paul Hobbs.
Created in a deep, plush and penetrating style, and sourced from a selection of Sonoma Coast Vineyards, the 2015 Crossbarn Pinot is really easy to love.  This is a wonderful introduction to Paul Hobbs wines and at $36/btl and ground shipping included on 15, don’t miss it.

“The 2015 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is plump, juicy and forward, with tons of black cherry, plum, licorice, lavender and spice notes. Succulent and racy, the 2015 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next few years, while the fruit remains juicy.”  90 Points
“… Aromas of crushed violet, Chinese tea, ripe raspberry, currant and musk are seamlessly echoed on a silky yet structured palate resplendent with wild berry, fresh cherry, blood orange and a hint of spice. Small Vines 2014 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

We’ve been conditioned to believe that bigger is better… but sometimes smaller is pretty darn good. Small Vines defines what a true Artisan producer is, and crafts wines of brilliant clarity, stunning depth and perfect balance.  They’re not just small in production, but their organically farmed vineyards yield just 1 to 2 pounds of fruit per vine naturally, due to the petite vines and tight spacing.  Then again, big can be good too, like the flavors which are broad and expansive, and of course, the high score.  At $55/btl this wine competes with the best California Pinots on the market.
Emerging from four sensational vineyard sites including TBH, Fassler, Baranoff and MK, the winery also produces single vineyard Pinots which retail for around $70-$80/btl.  Once harvested, the berries pass through roughly a dozen rigorous hand-evaluations, selecting only the very best grapes.  If you’re searching for a stunningly complex, classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, you’ll want a case of this beauty.

This wine arose from the Rodgers Creek Vineyard located in the Petaluma Gap, this vineyard produces single vineyard wines from Ramey, Sojourn and Cherry Pie. Spending 15 months in oak and aged sur lie, a French term meaning literally ‘on the sediment’, the sur lie style aging plays a large role in contributing to this wine’s rich, opulent texture.  If you’re searching for an incredibly high quality Chardonnay to share with your friends and family and selling way below its true value… This is it.
