METODO ANTIGUO

2016 Marimar Estate Pinot Noir Metodo Antiguo
Marimar Torres, of the renowned Familia Torres winemaking family in Spain, immersed herself in the wine business early, bringing an old-world, quality-minded approach to her Sonoma-based estate. Método Antiguo, which translates to “Old Method,” refers to the original way of making wine with whole cluster fermentation that is still used today by many of Burgundy’s top estates as a stylistic tool for increased savory complexity, textural qualities, and tannin structure.

Doña Margarita Vineyard is planted at high density, creating increased competition amongst the vines, slowing vigor, and deeply concentrating flavors, later enhanced by whole cluster fermentation. The inclusion of stems during vinification adds gentle tannins, improving the structure, adding heady freshness to the aromatics, which is particularly complementary to Pinot Noir, and this one is drinking beautifully.

Exceptional vineyards attract the best winemakers, and Montagu’s owner and winemaker, Weston Eidson, is no exception, gaining much of his experience from his mentors Jason Moore and Russel Bevan. Weston focuses on single-vineyard wines from some of the best vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, sourcing the fruit for this Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir from a hidden location in Sonoma’s rolling hills, cooled by ocean breezes and fog from the Pacific Ocean.

Rarely blended with other varietals, Pinot Noir is a vector for terroir expression and meant to reflect the earth on which it was grown. Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir presents richness elegantly with bright fruit character and refreshing acidity that you can’t find anywhere else on earth.

The palate leads with a crisp acidity that enhances the bright fruit character and soft tannins that lead into a silky, smooth finish. This wine is drinking wonderfully right now but can also lay down for 5-7 years. I’d be delighted to see this at my dinner table this evening.”

SONOMA COAST

2018 Aston Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Co-founded two decades earlier by industry leaders Fred Schrader, Chuck Sweeney, and Thomas Rivers Brown, Aston arose from 14 acres of prime coastal vineyards near Annapolis. The winery is now under the sole ownership of Brown, and with the vines coming into age, the quality of the wine produced is at an even higher level, and the brand is ready to claim its throne as one of the Sonoma Coast’s top players. Brown describes Annapolis Pinots as having a savage quality, yielding a more significant, structured style of this Burgundian variety.

Aston Vineyard is located along the Northern reaches of the Sonoma Coast and planted to Dijon clones 115, 667, and 777, which together produce a complete wine with outstanding depth and floral lift. As the vines have aged over the last two decades, Brown has noticed the fruit characteristics have become more interesting, and the 2018 release shows off the site’s capabilities.

This wine enters from a vintage the Wine Spectator describes as “Nearly perfect conditions; full-flavored wines backed by crisp acidity, especially from coastal vineyards,” then was aged in 100% new French oak barrels. Fans of BIG, rustic, full-bodied, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs should scoop this up by the case.

“2018 was a winegrower’s dream come true. We had every available advantage leading into harvest and ample hang time for the fruit to fully mature. While still made up of all Estate fruit, this bottling comes from its own block in the vineyard. The result in the glass is a balanced, expressive Pinot Noir that resonates with all the hallmark notes of the Estate vineyard. The wine displays a red-purple hue in the glass. Aromas suggest blackberry jam, cranberry, plum, orange pith, and nutmeg. The sleek, structured palate resonates with notes of raspberry, pomegranate pulp, river rock, and lavender. This wine possesses vivacious energy and shows extremely well today.”

2018 Freeman Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Defined by strength, balance, and inherent complexity, Freeman Pinot Noir embodies the soul of the Sonoma Coast. Setting out to prove domestic Pinot Noir can be both as complex and compelling as Burgundy, proprietors Ken and Akiko Freeman toured hundreds of properties before settling on the western edges of Sonoma County. They hired Pinot-maestro Ed Kurtzman to help bring their dream to fruition. Ed’s ability to shape Pinot Noirs with refinement, balance, and inherent sense of place, was matched with an uncompromising commitment to quality, resulting in exemplary coastal Pinot.

A marriage of 79% grapes from Yu-Ki Estate Vineyard at 1000 feet elevation and 5 miles from the Pacific, and 21% fruit from Campbell Ranch near Annapolis in the northernmost reaches of Sonoma County, this Pinot Noir transparently reflects Ocean influence, Sonoma Coast geography, and soils.

The winery notes that 2018 produced the highest quality fruit that they’ve encountered in their seventeen vintages at Freeman. Ed’s winemaking technique preserves the fruit’s natural expression by aging the wine for just 11 months in mostly neutral barrels. The resulting wine is exquisitely balanced, supple, and intriguing.
