Vaughn Duffy’s 2023 Pinot Noir captures the elemental drama of the Petaluma Gap, bringing its origins to life with clarity and focus. Produced from just six barrels, it’s an intimate, terroir-driven expression of one of California’s most distinctive coastal appellations, revealed through Matt Duffy’s singular focus on crafting Pinot Noir that speaks eloquently of its place. 

Here the Petaluma Gap’s daily wind and fog take center stage, slowing ripening and etching natural acidity into the fruit. The 2023 season ran cool and late, which allowed full flavor development at modest sugars. The result is a Pinot Noir that feels vivid and finely tuned, with energy that carries from first aroma to final sip. 

This wine’s brilliance lies in its balance: intensity without weight, elegance without fragility. After 10 months in French oak, the wine emerges with depth and polish, its supple tannins framing a core of crystalline fruit and savory complexity. It’s a testament to the power of place and the precision of thoughtful winemaking, bottled in its purest form.

Dan Fitzgerald of DANIEL Wines believes that the strong relationship between family, soil, and culture is at the heart of what makes a wine genuinely compelling. Unlike many wineries, Dan veers away from expansion and aims to stay small, focusing on a limited production of wines from premium growers with the same passionate demeanor. Case in point, Dan produced 45 cases of this gorgeous Pinot Noir.
 
Pinot Noir thrives in cool climates, and many of the world’s top Pinots come from areas with cooling coastal influences, like the Petaluma Gap in Sonoma County. The gap between the mountains funnels in cold oceanic breezes from the Pacific Ocean and creates a climate where Pinot Noir can not only fully ripen but maintain freshness. The Grand Vent Vineyard produces small crops of concentrated fruit with elegant balance, and the 2019 release is one of the best vintages of the last decade, and this is a shining example.

2021 Apsara Chardonnay Petaluma Gap
“Apsara” is a Sanskrit word that translates to an angelic dancer with balance, purity, and expression and accurately describes each of Apsara Cellars’ exquisite wines, vinified with precision by co-founder Robin Akhurst. Robin and Aneeta met over 20 years ago, studying biology and environmental science in Indonesia. Their travels piqued their interest in preserving the ecosystem with organic, biodynamic, and sustainable vineyard and winery practices.
 
Robin obtained his degree in Enology and spent the next four years working alongside some of the world’s top winemakers, including Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy, Two Hands Wines in the Barossa Valley, as well as Schrader, Outpost Cellars, Myriad, and Carter Cellars in the Napa Valley. Robin sourced his 2021 Chardonnay from the Petaluma Gap in Sonoma County, then matured it in French oak barrels. The resulting wine is a refreshing, light-natured, beautifully aromatic, and layered Chardonnay with delectable flavors.

After completing medical school, Kerith Overstreet decided winemaking sounded more exciting and enrolled to study enology at UC Davis leading to her first harvest in 2008. Launching Bruliam with a single barrel, Kerith now produces around 1000 cases annually of primarily single-vineyard Pinot Noir from cherished grower relationships in Sonoma County, Santa Lucia Highlands, and her own Torrey Hill vineyard in the Russian River Valley.
 
The Sangiacomo Roberts Road Vineyard was planted in 1998 and is the first area to receive fog in the Petaluma Gap and the last to burn it off, extending the growing season. This cool microclimate ripens about two weeks later than Gap’s Crown, giving fully ripe fruit without raising sugar levels and preserving crisp acidity, which the 2019 vintage represents beautifully with dynamic precision and elegantly nuanced flavors.
