Ritual’s organic estate in the Casablanca Valley sits just a few miles from the cooling effects of the Pacific Ocean, where a Humboldt current creates early morning fog and breezes ideal for Pinot Noir. The vineyards are surrounded by 6000 acres of forest promoting biodiversity and sustainability in the environment.
 
The grapes were hand harvested and double sorted before fermentation, in which a portion of the fruit is whole-cluster fermented, adding extra spice and tannin. The 2018 growing season saw significant rainfall in the winter and moderate temperatures throughout the season, resulting in a long hang time that guaranteed full physiological ripeness and intense flavor profiles.

The Peña family was one of the first to plant Cabernet Sauvignon in 1970 on the foothills of the Andes in the Alto Maipo, an elevated part of the Maipo Valley known for a number of the region’s best wines today. Before the family knew their vineyard’s potential, they sold fruit to some of the country’s top wineries, resulting in many of Chile’s most sought-after wines.
 
Clos Quebrada de Macul is a single vineyard on low-yielding hillside sites producing wines with deeper color, more structured tannins, and concentration. The 2017 Alba de Domus experienced low yields across the region, meaning that sloped vineyards with altitude saw meager production, increasing concentration and contributing to the lengthy and glorious finish.

Alex and Carrie Vik spent two years seeking out the most exceptional vine-growing terroirs in Chile with the potential to create the world’s best wines. Vik produced their Milla Cala in their state-of-the-art winery, which is one of the preeminent wineries in the Southern Hemisphere. Milla Cala arose from an area South of Santiago that they secured after years of intense scientific research and more than 4,000 soil samples, in a relentless search for the best terroir in Chile. The final blend incorporates nearly 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, accented with Carmeñere, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah.

The Vik wines are created by legendary winemaker Patrick Valette, who is responsible for crafting some of the most exceptional wines in Chile and Bordeaux, paired with Norwegian entrepreneur Alexander Vik. Did you know that Chile’s Maipo Valley has a Mediterranean Climate, similar to Napa Valley? Wine regions with a Mediterranean climate are characterized by their long growing seasons of moderate to warm temperatures and they’re perfectly suited for ripening Bordeaux varietals.  Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo Valley even shares some of the similar flavor characteristics to Napa Valley Cabernet with prominent black current and black cherry fruit.  One glaring difference between the two is the price of land and labor is significantly lower, and because of that, winemakers are able to devote any necessary resources to create high quality wines at exceptionally low prices.  A perfect example is the 2014 PRIMUS Cabernet, which is ridiculously great at under twenty bucks.   
 
With no expense spared in the winemaking, the grapes are double hand sorted before making their way into stainless steel fermenters.  The 2014 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged in French oak barrels for a full year before bottling.  On the palate the wine is firmly concentrated and loaded with classic black currants, dark cherry, mint, and sage.  I highly recommend stocking up…
