2022 Gritsch Riesling 1000-Eimerberg Austria

Rooted in centuries of continuity, Gritsch’s 1000-Eimerberg Federspiel Riesling draws its identity from one of the Wachau’s most enduring estates. The Mauritiushof in Spitz traces its origins to the 13th century, when it served as a place for monks to collect grapes along the Danube. In the hands of the Gritsch family since 1799, it stands today as a rare link between medieval viticulture and modern precision.

That continuity is tested and affirmed on the steep terraces of 1000-Eimerberg, a dramatic hillside rising above Spitz that defines both the challenge and character of the wine. The slopes are precipitous and unforgiving, leaving no room for shortcuts and requiring every vine to be worked by hand along ancient stone walls. This physical rigor shapes the wine’s profile, yielding fruit marked by focus, energy, and natural tension.

Dry and measured at 12.5% ABV, the 2022 vintage expresses the 1000-Eimerberg site with striking clarity. The wine moves with lift and purpose, its structure guided by natural acidity and restraint rather than weight. What lingers is a precise imprint of place, a Riesling that translates steep terraces and careful hands into a focused, articulate whole.

“The 2022 Riesling 1000-Eimerberg Federspiel is perfumed with zesty citrus tones, reminiscent of Seville orange peel. The palate is brilliantly pure and ripe, dancing in on light feet and charming with its rounded citrus ripeness. This is smooth, fresh, enticing and totally charming. Light in body and relatively mild, this is a wine to entice skeptics to Riesling. (Dry)”

2017 Heinrich Spindler Trocken Riesling Pfalz Germany
There’s passion in winemaking, and then there’s Markus Spindler, whose heart beats for Riesling. His family has been crafting Riesling in the Pfalz region of Germany for 400 years. He believes premium wines can only arise when a variety of small but crucial conditions occur, and he does everything in his power to make sure these events happen. His 2017 Trocken Riesling is brilliant, and at less than thirty bucks, the quality in the bottle is unmatched.

Markus Spindler farms 20 hectares of vines with a strong focus on organic principles. The vines are grown in shell limestone, basalt, colored sandstone, where the vines’ deep roots draw up the diverse minerals and store them in the grapes.

Pfalz offers a range of microclimates perfectly suited for ripening Riesling. Markus meticulously vinifies each plot individually in all of its variants. His greatest challenge is preserving the full range of natural aromatics, which he achieves through gentle handling, limiting the use of pumps, and utilizing gravity flow whenever possible.

“This is Markus’ bread and butter riesling. The grapes for this wine are sourced from Spindler’s vineyard holdings in Friedelsheim, Niederkirchen and Forst. It was fermented in stainless steel until dry with cultured yeasts. This is a pure expression of Pfalz exotics: passion fruit, peach, almond blossom.”

A darling varietal of Sommeliers due to it’s ability to pair with a diverse set of foods, Riesling’s naturally higher acidity, intense fruit and residual sugar allows it to be for white wines, what Pinot Noir is for reds… Riesling is a virtual chameleon when it comes to food and wine pairing and in my opinion, an essential part of any wine collection.  Whether you already love Riesling, or would like to experience a great one, A.J. Adam’s high-scoring Kabinet Riesling from the Grand Cru Hofberghttp://bit.ly/2016JeanLucRiesling Vineyard isn’t a bad place to start… At under thirty per bottle it’s absolutely sensational and it’s already earned 93 Points from Vinous.
This very special Riesling arose from the Grand Cru Hofberg Vineyard, which in 1868 was classified by the Prussians as an extraordinary place to grow Riesling… On the palate this wine is light and silky, moving elegantly with detailed pear, honeyed melon, wet stones and lime peel.  The fruit is sweet but not cloying and the wine has a delicate weight that’s absolutely enjoyable to sip. I highly recommend adding some of this to your collection before it sails away.

From Vinous:Ripe strawberry, pear and Persian melon are laced with smoky black tea and pungent orange peel and backed by wet stone on a haunting nose and an alluringly creamy yet brightly juicy palate. The sense of buoyancy, sheer refreshment and transparency of the finish are marvelous, and a wealth of stony, alkaline and mouthwateringly saline notes shimmers against the background of lusciously lingering fruit.”  93 Points
