2013 Relic Grenache Mount Veeder Napa Valley
Relic is a boutique wine project by Behrens & Hitchcock alumnus Mike Hirby and Schatzi Throckmorton that specializes in high-quality Bordeaux and Rhone varieties. The wines were made in Behren’s cellars for the first eight years of production, allowing Mike and Schatzi to focus on crafting the greatest wines possible without relying on financial investors.

Mike gained additional experience as the winemaker for Realm from 2002 to 2010. Together with Schatzi, the two share a limitless passion for creating wines that express the nuances of the vintage and their unique origin. The 2013 Grenache was sourced from shale and sandy soils on steep, south-facing slopes on Mount Veeder, giving perfectly ripe, juicy fruit with spicy undertones and an impressive capacity for aging.

“The 2013 Grenache, from Paras Vineyard on Mt. Veeder, is deep, plush and bursting at the seams with intense red fleshed fruit. Succulent and beautifully layered, the Grenache oozes character. A hint of French oak shapes the finish in a racy, voluptuous Grenache that is an absolute joy to taste today. Drink 2016-2023.”

2014 Husic Palm Terrace Cabernet Sauvignon
When you’ve had a successful career in investing like Frank Husic, you learn a thing or two about what’s needed for a company to give you a return on investment.  Calling on many of the same skills that made him a top financial planner, Frank gathered all the essentials to create a successful wine.  Beginning with the vineyard, located on the hillsides just above Napa Valley’s Iconic Stags leap District and planted to cult clones 337 and 7.  He then hired Jim Barbour as his viticulturist.  Jim’s list of clients include icons like Hundred Acre, Grace Family and Barbour to list a few… The next key component was hiring Mike Hirby as winemaker.  Mike’s past and present clients include Behrens Family, D.R. Stephens, Relic and Realm.  I’ll give you some insider’s advice… add some of this to your portfolio.
With everything in just the right place, Husic’s Palm Terrace rallies your taste buds into a bull market of dense blackberries, red currants, cassis and melted chocolate.  At under $100 a share, I mean a bottle, this is a wine that I can get behind and this beauty can be thoroughly enjoyed now and promises to pay dividends over the next 12-15 years.

Winery Notes: “2014 brought warm temperatures and moderate yields to our estate hillside vineyards in and above Stags Leap District, and the south-western exposure meant we were able to capture the warmth of the last rays of sun all season. The result is the most thoroughly ripe Palm Terrace we have made to date, comprised of clone 337 from Julie’s Knoll and Clone 7 from the Terraces. Aromas of damson plum, raspberry coulis, currants, sage, and cocoa are extremely inviting, while the palate unfolds in many layers of soft, lush fruit carrying rich, concentrated flavors. Drinkable now, and for many years to come.”

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “A barrel sample, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple colored, with a decadent cassis, baked blackberries and plum preserves-scented nose, plus hints of spice cake, cedar and Marmite toast. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and wonderfully spicy in the mouth, it has velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long.”

DEUX CHEVAUX VINEYARD
Retails at:  $65.00/btl
Your Price: $59.99/btl
Tamber Bey’s Deux Chevaux Vineyard in Yountville is in a prime location and lies just across the Napa River from the 100 Point producing Kapcsandy Estate Vineyards, and with the iconic Ghost Block Vineyard just a stone’s throw away, this vineyard is definitely in the right neighborhood.  This fruit was then given a voice by winemaker Andy Jones, who began working alongside winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown in 2008 at Black Sears Winery, and Brown continues as the consulting winemaker at Tamber Bey.
