KIDD RANCH SYRAH
NAPA VALLEY 2017

2017 Sequum Syrah Kidd Ranch Napa Valley
After decades of consulting super-premium grape growing, Paul Skinner launched his Sequum label in 2003, which is now blended and bottled at Pride Mountain Vineyards. “Sequum” is a scientific term describing layers of soil, and it turned out to be the perfect name for Paul’s wines as he combined his Ph.D. background in viticulture and soil science with years of experience in the vineyard and his passion for wine.

Paul takes a hands-on approach to his Kidd Ranch vineyard, noting subtle changes in soil composition and planting vines onto corresponding rootstocks for optimum health and vitality. His 2017 Syrah is a prime example of his expertise, delivered in a pure, focused, and complex wine that speaks of its place of origin with varietal typicity.

“Herbal, earthy and complex, this is a well-structured wine, rich and layered in blueberry and strawberry flavors. From a two-acre estate, it has length and breadth and is intensely flavorful, finishing in bolts of white and black pepper.”

Pride Mountain Vineyards is a paradigm producer on Spring Mountain that defines its wines’ success by their uncanny ability to be identified in blind tastings. This distinction is due to the Estate’s highly unique terroir and their undeviating focus on producing intensely flavored wines that honor their fabulous property. At around $80, their 2018 Cabernet is a benchmark for high-elevation hillside Cabernet in Napa Valley, and you might grab some while you can.

The Estate Vineyards are at the top of Spring Mountain, and they straddle the Napa and Sonoma County line. The extreme elevation provides warm mornings and chilly afternoons that result in longer hang-time, contributing textural and flavor characteristics that don’t exist anywhere else in the world. This location is only part of the reason why their wines are so desirable.

Winemaker Sally Johnson employs traditional winemaking practices designed to let the terroir of the grapes take center stage. Her method includes 100% destemming the red varietals and fermenting over two-weeks in stainless steel tank before transferring the wine to French oak barrels for roughly 18 months.

“Black currant, Morello cherry and just-ripe black mission fig dance with the aromas of sage, candied violets, star anise and black truffle. The palate is dense and compact with incredible structure. Layers of complex black and red fruit fill the mouth, while sandalwood, bay, graphite and forest aromatics linger with the velvety tannins on the long and dynamic finish. This is a showstopper!”
