2021 Sojourn Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Specializing in intensely flavored, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Sojourn Cellars emerged as a top-tier artisanal winery in 2001, motivated to craft exclusive wines from California’s most vibrant and unique vineyards. Decades later, the winery continues turning heads by skillfully showcasing the brilliance of each carefully chosen site.

Sourcing high-quality Pinot Noir grapes from the windswept regions along Sonoma Coast and foggy Russian River Valley, the 2021 release intertwines fruit from Gap’s Crown, Sangiacomo, Walala, and Dorothy Cameron Vineyards.

The optimal 2021 growing season offered exceptional quality grapes that were 100% destemmed, fermented in open-top fermenters, finished in French oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered for ultimate purity.

“Juicy and engaging, with heavy mulled raspberry and blood orange flavors coursing through, carried by a bright mineral edge and a flurry of red tea and savory notes. The long, lingering finish has nice latent tension. Drink now through 2030.”

Hal and Fiona Barnett founded Barnett Vineyards in 1983, producing varietally pure, polished, and powerful wines stemming from their commitment to sustainable practices with minimal intervention in the winemaking process. For over three decades, they’ve sourced their Chardonnay from the legendary Sangiacomo Vineyard in Carneros, earning access to some of the vineyards’ best blocks, including El Novillero, Vella, and Catarina.

The progress of barrel fermentation and later malolactic fermentation are routinely monitored by the winemaking team, sampling wine from each barrel to maintain the desired balance in the wine, resulting in a beautifully polished Chardonnay.

The 2021 release is a testament to the team’s deep understanding of Sangiacomo terroir and the fruit, revealing a remarkable equilibrium of flavors. All this set against the backdrop of an exceptional vintage, this Chardonnay is a joy to behold.

“Barnett Vineyards 2021 Sangiacomo Vineyard Chardonnay opens with notes of honeysuckle and peach blossoms, melted caramel, pear, pineapple, apple strudle, and a wet stone minerality. On the palate, the wine has flavors of sweet spices, waffle cone, pear, golden apple, and fresh bread dough. The wine has a delicate balance of flavor intensity and acidity that creates a long, elegant finish.”

2019 Barnett Vineyards Chardonnay Sangiacomo Vineyard
Barnett produces supremely balanced wines that are varietally appropriate and locationally transparent. They achieve this through selecting the right location and taking a hands-on, attentive approach to winemaking. Winemaker David Tate regularly samples juice from each barrel during fermentation, stopping malolactic fermentation on a barrel-by-barrel basis to preserve balance. Their 2019 Sangiacomo Vineyard Chardonnay is sensational and perfectly reflects the winery’s commitment to producing world-class wine.

The winery has produced Chardonnay from Sangiacomo for 28 vintages; thus, they can access some of the best blocks. Their 2019 combines El Novillero, Vella, and Catarina blocks. Each block is fermented separately in small batches before aging Sur Lie for ten months in French oak.

Winemaker David Tate has crafted Barnett since 2007, and he previously spent five years at Ridge, where he helped make their iconic Monte Bello Cabernet. His years at Ridge laid the groundwork for his commitment to quality and understanding what it takes to produce world-class wine with a sense of place.

GREEN ACRES

2016 Steele Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyard Green Acres
Winemaker Jed Steele has an impressive 50 years of winemaking experience, which began in the cellar at Stony Hill in 1968 after getting his enology degree at UC Davis. It’s taken him all over the Golden State, and he’s worked closely with grape-growers across California throughout that time. Jed settled on Sangiacomo’s Green Acres Vineyard to craft his first Pinot Noir under his namesake. Green Acres was also the Sangiacomo’s first vineyard, which they planted in 1969, and it’s their most sought-after with the greatest number of Sangiacomo-designated wines produced from it. Wines average around $50 from this site, so at $24, it’s a steal.

One might describe Steele’s winemaking approach as minimalistic, and they use a light-handed method that better highlights the wines’ natural aromas and flavor characteristics. They transfer wine by gravity wherever possible and use native yeasts and natural fermentation during the process.

They fashioned the 2016 Green Acres Pinot Noir from 30-year-old vines that produced berries with incredible flavor intensity. The wine spent 16 months in barrel, and now time in the bottle has further developed the remarkable depth and finely detailed flavors in this very special Pinot.

COSA OBRA

SONOMA COAST

2016 Cosa Obra Sonoma Coast Pinot NoirCosa Obra makes my short-list of the leading values in Pinot Noir that we’ve introduced over the years. We still get requests for it months, and even years after our offering. The perceived value that gets packed into each bottle is palpable, and the 2016 vintage is a splendid example. This vintage brought a more powerful, meatier style of Pinot from the famed Sangiacomo Vineyard. At our price, I’m confident that people will be talking about this long after it’s gone.

The Sangiacomo Vineyard is the source for Cosa Obra, and its storied history earned more than its fair share of memorable, highly-rated wines. The 2016 vintage spent just nine months in French oak, preserving the wines vibrant and lively flavors, yet adding a lightly toasty finish.

Cosa Obra sources the fruit from a tiny block of Pommard Clone grapes that produces intriguing aromas and a dense Pinot Noir fruit. It erupts from the glass with a vibrant medley of dark cherries, exotic spices, wild roses, and subtle meaty characteristics.

It’s very telling to us when any particular wine is still requested and praised months or even years post offering…  When this happens, some might call it storied or legendary, but when a value Pinot Noir under thirty bucks makes this list, it simply speaks to the above average quality of the wine.  For those of you who tasted, loved and are still talking about the earlier vintages of Cosa Obra Pinot, all I can say is, wait until you taste the 2016… Vaulting from from the glass with a vibrant medley of dark cherries, exotic spices, lavender and subtle vanilla, this is not only a terrific value, but a wine I think people will talk about long after it’s gone.

Arising from the Sangiacomo Vineyard, a vineyard that’s produced it’s fair share of memorable and highly-rated wines, the 2016 spends just 9 months in French oak, preserving the wines vibrant and lively flavors, yet adding a lightly toasty finish.  Long, lovely and persistent on the palate this is simply a wine that when you taste it, you feel like you got a great deal, and that leaves a good taste in your mouth… Pun intended.
