The Tinazzi family has produced wine for over 50 years and seeks modernity and sustainability within their traditional vineyard and winemaking practices. The winery’s sustainability focus began in the 2000s to protect and preserve the environment and the needs of future generations while producing prestigious local wines.
 
Corvina is a late-ripening Italian grape variety grown in the Veneto that’s low in tannin and high in acidity. It is integral in Valpolicella wines, including the region’s famous Amarone. This 100% Corvina is varietally classic with red berried fruits, black cherry, and spice that entices fans of juicy Rhône-style blends, Zinfandel, and of course, Valpolicella. The previous vintage made our top 5 wines list last year, and the 2019 vintage represents the same level of top-notch quality for an unbeatable value.

Corvina is an Italian grape variety with an integral role in all Valpolicella wines, including Amarone, which must include a minimum of 45% in their blends. This late-ripening variety is low in tannin and high in acidy. Tinazzi’s version is varietally characteristic, manifested with bright cherry, transitioning to juicy dark cherry, spice, and classic hints of almond, a signature of the variety.
 
Located near Verona in Northern Italy, Tinazzi sits in the heart of where the Corvina grape reigns supreme. Proprietor Gian Andrea Tinazzi is passionate about accurately expressing territorial character in his wines, and his Corvina from Verona is a classic example. Tasting Tinazzi’s 2018 Corvina last April, we were entranced by the outrageous quality, unfitting at its value price. However, when recently re-tasting each potential selection for our top five list this year, the fact that our panel preferred drinking this over $150 – $250 Napa Cabs on the table solidified our choice.

Gian Andrea sourced this Corvina from hillside vineyards in Valpolicella with excellent sun exposure, resulting in deep, fully-developed flavors. Once harvested, the fruit is destemmed and gently crushed before aging in barrels for 12 months, preserving its natural acidity.
