In 2000 Dave Phinney released the inaugural vintage of a Zinfandel-based red blend called The Prisoner, which he continued to create for the next eight years until he sold the brand to Huneeus Vintners. The sale came with an eight-year non-compete agreement, preventing Dave from producing Zinfandel blends under his brand, Orin Swift.
 
Orin Swift’s 8 Years in the Desert debut in 2016 and represents those next eight years. The wine was an instant success, driven by its smooth, approachable style with seductive fruits sourced from a collection of premier vineyards in California. The 2021 vintage is the sixth iteration in the brand’s return to Zinfandel blends, with Petite Sirah and Syrah rounding out the mouthfeel and providing extra complexity; the wine is impressive in its fruit-forward style and remains beautifully balanced.

The only thing deeper than the roots of the ancient Zinfandel vines at R.W. Moore Vineyard is Mike and Molly Hendry’s ties to Napa Valley. Mike’s grandparents purchased a vineyard at the base of Mount Veeder in 1939, where the Hendry Winery is today. Molly’s uncle Bill owns the historic R.W. Moore Vineyard in Coombsville’s center, planted in 1905 and part of the U.C. Davis Heritage Vineyard project, where genetic material is studied and preserved. 
 
This field blend of approximately 95% Zinfandel, 1% Petite Sirah, 1% Carignan, 1% Mourvedre, and 2% Mourtaou is grown in Coombsville, where the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean keep the grapes from developing overripe, jammy fruit characteristics, producing a more balanced Zinfandel. Eight Years in the Desert represents Orin Swift’s full-circle, which began with two tons of Zinfandel in 1998. In 2000, the Zinfandel wasn’t great as a single-varietal, so Dave Phinney, Orin Swift founder, created a blend and produced the inaugural vintage of The Prisoner, which he continued to make for the following eight vintages before selling The Prisoner brand. Eight Years in the Desert’s name references his eight-year non-compete agreement where Orin Swift couldn’t produce Zinfandel Blends, and lucky for us, they’ve now escaped those bounds. 
 
Calling on a vast collection of premier vineyards spanning California’s most ideal growing regions, 8 Years in the Desert is premeditatively crafted in a bold, approachable style, bearing delectable complexity and seductive fruits.

Turley’s Old Vines Zinfandel is birthed each vintage from a collection of ancient vineyards, with vines ranging from 41 to 129 years old. Director of winemaking Tegan Passalacqua calls the 2018 vintage “one of the best in a long time,” and this wine wears it on its sleeves. They’ve produced their Old Vine Cuvee for twenty vintages, and it’s because it’s a compilation of so many of their properties that it’s as the winery describes, “the story of Turley Wine Cellars itself.”
