CROCKER & STARR

2017 Crocker & Starr Bridesmaid Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc Blend2017 BRIDESMAID WHITE
AVA, NAPA VALLEY

Everybody loves being the guest that brings the best wine to the party… Even better is when the wine itself is contagiously fun and energetic.  Crocker & Starr’s new 2017 Bridesmaid White exudes those qualities and the 2017 is delightfully engaging, provocative and full of life.  The 2017 tosses a bouquet of sweet flowers and citrus leaves before waltzing down the aisle with exotic passion fruit, Island mango, honey drizzled pear, and orange zest.  This exciting blend is a collaboration of declassified barrels of premium wine lots, carefully selected from several of Napa Valley’s premier wineries after their own blends are complete.  The wine that makes it into the bottle often had an intended retail of more than double the price…

Bridesmaid was inspired through Pam Starr’s work at notables as Spottswoode and Gemstone and at under twenty per bottle, this is a delicious introduction to the wines of Crocker & Starr.  The blend consists of remarkably high-quality Sauvignon Blanc wed with a small amount of Semillon, adding a silkiness to the wine that’s simply mesmerizing. I strongly recommend stocking up on this gorgeous declassified jewel.

Winery Notes:This brilliant Sauvignon Blanc blend is pale straw yellow in the glass and the aroma is loaded with honeysuckle, lychee, lime leaves, and laced with the slight salinity of oyster shell. Mouthwatering flavors of lemon meringue pie, key lime, honeydew melon, and white peach gleam on the palate. And the Semillon adds jelly richness to the wine’s medium-bodied, perfectly balanced center. The wine shines all the way through the savory finish, which is lined with crushed seashell. You will love this so much that a case simply won’t be enough.

OLD VINE, ST. HELENA

If you’ve ever wondered what terroir tastes like, and if it could be found in a bottle of Old Vine Sauvignon Blanc, the answer is in a bottle of Leto’s 2016… Terroir refers to all of the environmental factors that collectively  contribute to a wine’s character and flavors.  Things like climate, farming practices, soil type, etc.  Reflecting terroir, older vines often provide the best representation of their unique characteristics because the root systems are deeper, allowing more complexity to flow from the earth.  Leto’s Sauvignon Blanc was created from 1/2 century old vines grown in a single vineyard in Napa Valley’s iconic St. Helena AVA.  The wine is remarkably intriguing, hedonistic and full of life. Leto’s 2016 Sauvignon Blanc is rich, and inviting with sensational flavors spanning fresh coconut, ripe pear, orchard fruits, chalk and rock minerals

Created by Brad Warner, the owner/winemaker who has been making wine for over a 1/2 century, Brad’s talent shows in this brilliant interpretation of St Helena Sauvignon Blanc.  Arising from the Varozza Vineyard on Pratt Avenue in St Helena, the older vines yield just 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 tons per acre of stunningly compelling fruit.  At $22/btl, one taste and you won’t LET it gO…

styled Napa Valley Cabernet with enticing aromas of blackberry tart, cassis, pencil lead, tobacco leaf and rocky minerals.  These aromatics blend seamlessly with a saturating palate of red and black cherries, crushed blueberries, dried sage and a hint of camphor. The tannins are velvety yet slightly firm and the flavors supple and rich yet mouth quenching at the same time. A nicely balanced acid profile keeps all of the rich fruit in check so they all meld into a beautifully complete Cabernet that has style, elegance, weight and length.  What more could you want?”  95 Points, Kevin M. 2017 Farella La Luce Estate Coombsville Sauvignon Blanc
In a world where clarity is hard to find, I will say with absolute clarity that you’d be hard pressed to find a better Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc at anywhere near this price.  Tom Farella’s 2017 Estate Sauvignon Blanc has mesmerizing nuances of Loire Valley-like honeydew melon, ripe tangerine and light tropical notes that flow from the glass.  One of the most balanced domestic Sauvignon Blancs that I’ve ever tasted, the 2017 reveals wonderful energy, freshness and profound purity.  The 2016 was our most loved Sauvignon Blancs on our tasting menu in Yountville, and the 2017 is even better…

Keeping only 15-20% of their single-block Sauvignon Blanc grapes, the balance goes to high powered producers like Lail and Realm for their award winning Sauvignon Blancs.  The 2017 is dreamlike, with remarkable balance, focused fruit and a long, palate refreshing finish.  The wine was fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness, the wine’s uplifted aromatics and fabulous notes of citrus oil, crushed rock, white flowers, honeyed melon and tangerine are generous and frankly hard to resist.  If you’re in pursuit of a Sauvignon Blanc that will be a palpable stand-out at Summer and Fall festivities, you’ll want to pick this beauty up by the case.

2017 Grey Stack Dry Stack Vineyard Rosemary's Block Sauvignon Blanc
It’s all about the vineyard, and when I think of California’s most memorable Sauvignon Blancs, I’m continually drawn to Dry Stack Vineyard in Bennett Valley.  That feeling was set in stone when I tasted Grey Stack’s latest release which has already scored 94 Points (that’s particularly high for Sauvignon Blanc.)  Perfectly expressing the essence of Dry Stack… Intense, vivid and with copious rocky minerals and abundant yet detailed notes of fresh guava, ripe tangerine, Island mango and mineral infused citrus.  You might think $32 is a little high for Sauvignon Blanc, but when you taste the wine it’s actually a stunning value for a wine of this magnitude.

Brought to life by winemaker Patrick Sullivan whose vast experience includes making wine at Peter Michael, Paul Hobbs, Lewis Cellars and Rudd.  The Dry Stack Vineyard is strategically positioned in Bennett Valley which lies Southeast of Santa Rosa along a minor Mountain range.  With a cooler climate with heavy maritime influence, the vineyard itself sits at 550 feet in elevation on a rocky bench and produces fruit of magical qualities.  If you love Sauvignon Blanc, or better yet, even if you don’t… Try this one and you’ll probably never look back.

2017 Elizabeth Spencer Mendocino Sauvignon Blanc
The very first thing that came to my mind when tasting Elizabeth Spencer’s 2017 Sauvignon Blanc was this is a wine that everybody is going to love…  It was followed by pure, clean and refreshing white orchard fruits, ginger, rock minerals, lime and exotic passionfruit.  The wine was fermented in 100% stainless steel which helped preserve the natural acidity and bright, clean fruit.  At $19.99/btl this is simply one of the best expressions of California Sauvignon Blanc that I’ve found.
Created from two organically farmed vineyards, Gibson and Talmage Bench, the tension created from the two sites creates excitement on the palate.  The older vines lend complexity and mineral qualities which I find intensely interesting.  Inspired by Sauvignon Blancs from the Loire Valley in France, this is made in a fresh, pure style leaning towards white fruits and minerals.  It’s absolutely delicious to drink and as great as it is, it may not be available for long.

2016 G of Chateau Guiraud Bordeaux White
Variety is the spice of life and while California, Sancerre and New Zealand offer Sauvignon Blancs with bright, sometimes searing acidity and super-crisp flavors, Bordeaux brings a more rich, opulent and lime-infused style that’s impossible to ignore.  Detailed, round and broad are all perfect descriptors for Chateau Guiraud’s Bordeaux White which opens up to limestone-scented baked yellow-apples, mandarin orange, tangerine, wet stone and crème brûlée.  A palate quenching kaleidoscope of finely detailed flavors keeps you coming back for more, and with a 90-93 Point score from the Wine Spectator, I wouldn’t hesitate to secure a case.

Château Guiraud isn’t just one of Bordeaux’s preeminent producers of First Growth Sauternes, they also produce stunning dry whites wines.  A blend of both Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the 2016 is remarkably expressive, rich and assertive.  If you haven’t experienced a dry white from this renowned wine region, here’s a terrific opportunity to try one of the best.
