NAPA VALLEY 2022

2022 AXR Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley
AXR’s estate is a historic property founded over 130 years ago that has been a brewery, restaurant, inn, saloon, and winery with the first woman vintner in California in 1886. The property sits at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains with layers of sedimentary soils formed from eons of rainwater runoff, giving a distinct character and range of depth.

Winemaker and part-owner Jean Hoefliger was born in Switzerland and gained initial experience making wine in Bordeaux, working for Château Lynch-Bages and Château Carbonnieux, and later in South Africa at Meerlust. AXR’s 2022 Sauvignon Blanc was fermented in three different vessels, 70% in barrel, 18% in stainless steel, and 12% in concrete eggs, before five months of maturation in 20% new French oak, giving a white Bordeaux-style and mouthfeel with expressive Napa Valley fruit.

Bibiana González Rave puts her heart and soul into each wine she vinifies and branded her company accordingly, as ‘alma’ translates to ‘soul’ in Spanish. Bibiana grew up in Colombia, where the national flower is the Cattleya (Orchid,) and now produces wines with highly transparent varietal purity from Sonoma County and Napa Valley.

She has an impressive repertoire of experience making wine in Bordeaux, the Rhone Valley, and South Africa. When she came to California, industry leaders immediately recognized her talents, hiring her to create fabulous wines at Peay, Lynmar, and Pahlmeyer. The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc came from five different hillside vineyards in Sonoma County, resulting in a dynamic drinking experience. The wine was aged six months on its lees in neutral barrels before bottling, giving an added complexity that’s seriously enjoyable.

2019 Desante L'Atelier Proprietary White Napa Valley
Desante’s L’Atelier proves that certain grape varietals can complement one another by accentuating specific characteristics. In this case, Semillon adds richness and opulence to the bright, piercing Sauvignon Blanc elements, resulting in a supremely focused white with enough richness to keep you coming back for more.

Dave Desante’s admiration for winemaking began at age ten, and it’s taken him all over the world, from Margaret River, Australia, to Chateau Petrus in Bordeaux. He’s revered as an expert winemaking consultant in Napa Valley and was the founding winemaker for Tierra Roja.

The Semillon grapes are from 45-year-old, dry-farmed vines in Yountville, and contribute to the wine’s textural depth, richness, and floral complexity. The Sauvignon Blanc came from the nearly half-century-old Varozza Vineyard in St. Helena, which brings intense minerality and bright citrus fruits.

“Surprising with its vivid aromatic references to flint and peach, this refreshing summer white could be mistaken with ease for one of the best offerings from Bordeaux. True to this reference, there is a harmonic balance of Semillon (30%) that rounds the vibrant edge of the crisp Sauvignon Blanc. The Semillon adds mid-palate weight without making this marriage a clumsy one. Spiced pear and fresh mandarin are the flavors that result with a flourish of toast and mineral in the pleasing finish. This is the wine to enjoy with prawns, grilled vegetables and salmon.”
