2018 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Lot C-91 Napa Valley

A visionary pioneer, Joe Heitz etched his name into Napa Valley history by introducing the region’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon from Martha’s Vineyard in the late 1950s. He subsequently founded Heitz Cellar in 1961.

Lot C-91 traces its origins to the autumn of 1969. Joe had a profound realization: by carefully selecting grapes from his finest parcels, he could craft a wine that transcended the sum of its components. The resulting wine embodies the culmination of five decades of relentless dedication, experimentation, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.

A passionate homage to Joe Heitz, who passed in 2000, this cuvée is meticulously crafted in each vintage. The 2018 vintage, predominantly sourced from estate vineyards in St. Helena, incorporates fruit from the revered appellations of Oakville, Rutherford, and Howell Mountain. The result is a flawlessly balanced Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, a timeless testament to Joe Heitz and his enduring legacy.

“In 1969, Joe Heitz made a cuvée that was more outstanding than his Napa Cabernet, but not a single-vineyard bottling. In 2018, after the winery was bought by Gaylon Lawrence Jr., the team at Heitz discovered four bottles and decided they should set out to recreate Joe’s experiment. It is the boldest of the bunch: a delicious hedonistic pleasure filled red with excellent balance and teeming with pure dark fruit notes, rich earthen spices, dried purple florals, cedarwood, tobacco, and dark chocolate — a firm acid backbone frames fine-grained tannins. There is plenty of richness, balanced by tension and energy. Lawrence Wine Estates Master Sommelier and CEO Carlton McCoy calls it the ‘uber Napa cuvee’ and the best multi-site expression of Heitz for the vintage.”

2022 Salus Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Estate

Some estates define a place so completely that their story becomes inseparable from the soil itself. On the southwestern edge of Rutherford, where a century and a half of viticultural history lies layered in gravel and clay, the Staglin family continues a legacy first planted in the 1860s. Each vintage conveys that sense of place, making it unmistakably Staglin and setting the bar for Rutherford excellence.

At the helm is winemaker Fredrik Johansson, whose precision and judicious winemaking define the modern Staglin style. Trained under Thomas Rivers Brown and guided by vineyard maestro David Abreu, Johansson shapes the estate’s organically farmed fruit into a Cabernet Sauvignon that radiates purity and structure.

Power meets intention in this wine. Beneath its layers of fruit lies a more profound generosity: the Staglin family’s ongoing commitment to healing the mind. Through One Mind, each bottle of Salus extends that mission, bridging the worlds of fine wine and philanthropy with rare authenticity while donating 100% of its profits. In the Staglin tradition, greatness is measured not only by acclaim but also by compassion. Bravo!

“Staglin Salus Estate Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2022: This Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon displays a deep ruby color with impressive concentration. The nose reveals black and blue fruits, graphite, pipe tobacco, crushed stone, and red rose petals, offering complexity without excess. On the palate, blackberries and boysenberries dominate, supported by a deep, lush, and powerful structure. The oak is balanced and integrated, adding depth rather than overwhelming the fruit. Intense and concentrated, it finishes long and elegant, with fine tannins suggesting 15-20 years of evolution. A strong effort from Staglin. Drink 2026-2042.”

2013 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford

When Philippe Bascaules shifted his focus from Château Margaux to Inglenook, the objective was not to replicate Bordeaux style, but to apply Bordeaux standards. The 2013 Inglenook Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon is a direct expression of that discipline, defined by precision, hierarchy, and a deliberate resistance to excess.

That intent is most evident in the wine’s construction. Estate-grown fruit is drawn from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon lots remaining after Inglenook’s Rubicon blend is finalized, placing this bottling squarely within the estate’s internal hierarchy. It is shaped by the same uncompromising criteria that govern Inglenook’s flagship wine, where balance and longevity are essential, not optional.

The 2013 growing season provided ideal conditions to realize that vision. A dry, even year delivered fruit with natural concentration, allowing the blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot, to come together with definition. Eighteen months in oak unified the structure, reinforcing a sense of proportion and setting the wine firmly on a path of long, measured evolution.

“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is very fine. It remains young and quite vibrant, with lovely floral overtones that add freshness throughout. This mid-weight, energetic Cabernet is terrific. In time, it may surpass the Rubicon, given its greater freshness. This is a fine showing. Drink 2023 – 2033.”

2021 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour

With consistency and restraint, Beaulieu Vineyards Georges de Latour Private Reserve helped shape the very identity of Napa Valley and remains one of its most enduring benchmarks. First produced in 1936, it is a living record of the region’s evolution, proving that true greatness is not driven by trends, but earned through decades of disciplined craftsmanship and vision.

The 2021 vintage draws its strength from the western bench of Rutherford, sourced exclusively from BV Ranches No. 1 and No. 2, vineyards first planted by Georges de Latour in the early 1900s. These historic sites sit on well-draining alluvial fan soils that naturally limit vigor and concentrate flavor, producing Cabernet Sauvignon of depth, structure, and unmistakable Rutherford character.

The 2021 vintage affirmed its place among Napa’s elite when it was ranked #2 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2024 and earned multiple 98-point scores from leading critics. These accolades are not departures from history, but confirmations of it, reinforcing Georges de Latour as a wine that continues to set the standard for what great Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon can achieve.

“Lastly, the flagship 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges De Latour Private Reserve is in the same ballpark as the 2019 and is an incredibly elegant yet concentrated 2021 that does everything right. Purple-hued, with ample cassis, wild sage, graphite, and darker chocolate-like aromatics, it picks up a Graves-like gravelly earth character with air and is full-bodied, has ripe, polished tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. As with many of the top 2021s, it’s a touch reserved and closed and needs 4-5 years of bottle age, but will drink well for 30 years.”

Grand Napa’s 2021 Reserve Cabernet is a reminder that power, when guided by grace, leaves the most profound impression. Under Stéphane Vivier’s steady hand, these elements are woven together with restraint and precision, creating a wine that reflects both the diversity of Napa and the unity of a master’s touch.

2021 Simon Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Simon’s 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a thrilling benchmark for what modern Napa can achieve: powerful yet polished, expressive yet restrained. Shaped by star winemaker Maayan Koschitzky, whose journey spans Screaming Eagle and his role as Director of Winemaking at Atelier Melka, it embodies a synthesis of pedigree and precision, earning 97-point acclaim and placing it among the valley’s most compelling wines.

Its foundation lies in a pantheon of Napa’s most revered vineyards: Sleeping Lady in Yountville, Vine Hill Ranch and Tench in Oakville, Beckstoffer Georges III in Rutherford, and Collinetta in Coombsville. Each site contributes a vital voice: benchland fruit for structure, eastern slopes for intensity and minerality, and Coombsville’s volcanic soils for freshness and aromatic lift.

Koschitzky’s hallmark is clarity, and it shows in every detail of this 2021 Cabernet. The élevage in French oak provides sculpted edges rather than ornament, allowing terroir to speak in a clear, resonant voice. The wine is penetrating but not ostentatious, refined but not restrained—a true reflection of a winemaker at the height of his craft.

“Extremely precise and focused Napa Cabernet sporting black currants, black cherries, and coriander, bright minerality, with fragrant wild herbs and white pepper nuances. Medium to full-bodied. The tannins are very pointed, precise, and long and have a beautifully sweet edge that seamlessly resolves into perfectly ripe black cherry fruit and currants with a mineral-rich finish. It’s fresh, lacy, and compact. “The Conn Creek ‘Special Selection’ is a blend of appellations that were among the original sources of the estate (established in 1973) and from sites around Napa Valley. The idea is to frame a classically fashioned snapshot of Napa Cabernet through the eyes of Elizabeth DeLouise-Gant, who has been making the wines since 2017. Previously, she worked at Beaulieu Vineyard, Tamber Bey, and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. This 2019 is over a classic vintage expression, with fruit from Mt. Veeder, Oakville, St. Helena, Howell Mountain, Rutherford, Atlas Peak, and Spring Mountain AVAs. Very pretty blackberry fruit aromas, nuanced by tobacco, cedarwood, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied with tobacco-laced blackberry fruit, Bing cherry, and spiced plums, with delicious vanilla-kissed sweet oak spices and an undercurrent of mocha with fine-grained tannins and a finish of chalky minerality.”

Staglin’s 2021 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon commands attention with its layered complexity, intricate detail, and deep connection to its origins. It embodies the essence of Rutherford: a harmonious balance of structured tannins and supple fruit, anchored by the distinctive earthy minerality known as “Rutherford dust.”

The vineyard, rooted in history, lies on the gravel-rich benchlands at Rutherford’s southwestern edge. First cultivated in the 1860s, these venerable soils flourish under the Staglin family’s thoughtful stewardship, guided by care, conscience, and a vision for the future. “The finest example of this estate I’ve ever tasted, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a flat-out sensational effort that hits perfection. Exhibiting a deep purple hue as well as a smorgasbord-like array of cassis, scorched earth, chocolate, and spicy wood, it has a Pauillac-like cedar pencil character, full-bodied richness, and voluptuous, a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and sweet tannins. While there’s considerable structure, it’s concealed by the wine’s extravagant fruit, richness, and opulence. This prodigious, sensationally pure, heavenly Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will have another three decades of overall longevity.”
