2021 Tom Eddy Cabernet Sauvignon Kerry's Vineyard Napa Valley

Tom Eddy has never chased the modern Napa style. While many producers turned toward heavier ripeness and immediate appeal, he stayed committed to powerful mountain Cabernet Sauvignon meant to evolve for decades. The 2021 Kerry’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon carries that same identity from the very first sip. It is structured, intense, and built to last.

The 2021 vintage aligns perfectly with everything Tom Eddy has built his reputation on: firm structure, longevity, and mountain-driven intensity. Kerry’s Vineyard brings impressive concentration while holding onto freshness and control. There is real power here, yet it never feels excessive or overworked.

Wines like this have become increasingly rare in Napa Valley. There is no attempt to soften the edges or rush approachability. Instead, the 2021 Kerry’s Vineyard simply embraces the structure and drive that have defined Tom Eddy Cabernets for decades, rewarding patience rather than chasing immediacy.

“Coming from Kerry’s Vineyard in Calistoga, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Kerry’s Vineyard reveals a classic bouquet of red and black fruits, chocolate, spice, and floral nuances, with subtle oak shadings in the background. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a round, supple texture, with fine balance and integration. The finish brings chalky, crushed stone-like minerality that adds complexity. Aged three years in 70% new French oak, this beautifully crafted effort will drink nicely over the coming 8-10 years.”

2018 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Lot C-91 Napa Valley

A visionary pioneer, Joe Heitz etched his name into Napa Valley history by introducing the region’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon from Martha’s Vineyard in the late 1950s. He subsequently founded Heitz Cellar in 1961.

Lot C-91 traces its origins to the autumn of 1969. Joe had a profound realization: by carefully selecting grapes from his finest parcels, he could craft a wine that transcended the sum of its components. The resulting wine embodies the culmination of five decades of relentless dedication, experimentation, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.

A passionate homage to Joe Heitz, who passed in 2000, this cuvée is meticulously crafted in each vintage. The 2018 vintage, predominantly sourced from estate vineyards in St. Helena, incorporates fruit from the revered appellations of Oakville, Rutherford, and Howell Mountain. The result is a flawlessly balanced Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, a timeless testament to Joe Heitz and his enduring legacy.

“In 1969, Joe Heitz made a cuvée that was more outstanding than his Napa Cabernet, but not a single-vineyard bottling. In 2018, after the winery was bought by Gaylon Lawrence Jr., the team at Heitz discovered four bottles and decided they should set out to recreate Joe’s experiment. It is the boldest of the bunch: a delicious hedonistic pleasure filled red with excellent balance and teeming with pure dark fruit notes, rich earthen spices, dried purple florals, cedarwood, tobacco, and dark chocolate — a firm acid backbone frames fine-grained tannins. There is plenty of richness, balanced by tension and energy. Lawrence Wine Estates Master Sommelier and CEO Carlton McCoy calls it the ‘uber Napa cuvee’ and the best multi-site expression of Heitz for the vintage.”

Mt. Veeder 2021

2021 Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder

High on Mt. Veeder, where vineyards cling to fractured slopes and fog drifts beneath the canopy, Mt. Brave finds its voice. The 2021 Cabernet rises from this unforgiving terrain, shaped by elevation, exposure, and time rather than convenience. What emerges is a wine of uncommon gravity, carrying the mountain’s tension and resolve through every layer.

Chris Carpenter guides that expression with the authority of experience, drawing on decades spent understanding Napa’s most demanding mountain vineyards. At Mt. Brave, his approach balances discipline with intuition, allowing the intensity of Mt. Veeder fruit to speak without losing precision. Thoughtful choices in the vineyard and cellar bring structure into proportion, refining the mountain’s natural edge rather than softening it.

The 2021 vintage captures Mt. Brave at a moment when structure and harmony fully align. Dense fruit, firm architecture, and underlying freshness point to a long, measured evolution in bottle, even as the wine already shows composure and depth. This is mountain Cabernet built with patience in mind, rewarding contemplation today and cellaring in the years ahead.

“A fabulous wine of focus and polish with very fine tannins that caress your palate and give great length to the finish. Medium to full body. The aromas of violets and currants are so beautiful. Dreamy. Best ever? A blend of 92% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc, 2% merlot, 1% malbec and 1% petit verdot. A total of 3830 cases produced. Give it three to four years to soften.”

2013 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford

When Philippe Bascaules shifted his focus from Château Margaux to Inglenook, the objective was not to replicate Bordeaux style, but to apply Bordeaux standards. The 2013 Inglenook Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon is a direct expression of that discipline, defined by precision, hierarchy, and a deliberate resistance to excess.

That intent is most evident in the wine’s construction. Estate-grown fruit is drawn from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon lots remaining after Inglenook’s Rubicon blend is finalized, placing this bottling squarely within the estate’s internal hierarchy. It is shaped by the same uncompromising criteria that govern Inglenook’s flagship wine, where balance and longevity are essential, not optional.

The 2013 growing season provided ideal conditions to realize that vision. A dry, even year delivered fruit with natural concentration, allowing the blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot, to come together with definition. Eighteen months in oak unified the structure, reinforcing a sense of proportion and setting the wine firmly on a path of long, measured evolution.

“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is very fine. It remains young and quite vibrant, with lovely floral overtones that add freshness throughout. This mid-weight, energetic Cabernet is terrific. In time, it may surpass the Rubicon, given its greater freshness. This is a fine showing. Drink 2023 – 2033.”

His 2019 Ontogeny is no exception, revealing a dense purple hue as well as rock star notes of crème de cassis, violets, tobacco leaf, and chocolate. Paradigm’s Cabernet has long been a wine for those paying close attention. Its broader recognition did not arrive through marketing or spectacle, but through discovery, when a respected critic encountered it unexpectedly and recognized something exceptional. That moment confirmed what insiders had long known: Paradigm is an estate that has been producing Cabernet of uncommon poise and remarkable quality.

This privileged position, defined by alluvial soils and ideal exposure, yields fruit of natural concentration and balance. The vineyard expresses itself clearly, capturing Oakville’s signature tension between power and elegance, richness balanced by freshness, and without excess.

“This blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot was fermented in stainless steel with a small percentage of whole berries included. Winemaker Mark Fasi explains that pressing off the wine before it goes dry helps to soften the tannins. The wine is then aged 18–20 months in approximately 50% new French oak. The Paradigm Cabernet Sauvignons are medium-bodied and exude utmost elegance, showcasing soaring tannins that are assertive yet beautifully integrated and framed by crisp, juicy acidity. The palate reveals pure and gorgeous red berry fruit, complemented by a panoply of brown spices, wild herbs like sage, and floral notes of lilacs and violets. This wine is absolutely pure, brimming with energy and tension, and delivers a stunningly refined expression. A remarkable effort, embodying balance, vitality, and sophistication. Truly impressive. The winemaker is legendary Napa icon Heidi Barrett. Mark Fasi, who joined the winery in 2010 and has worked hand-in-hand with Barrett, takes the helm as winemaker with the 2023 vintage.”

After years of quiet evolution in the cellar, the 2019 Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon is finally revealing the full measure of its power and grace. What was once tightly coiled and brooding has unfurled into a symphony of mountain fruit, fine tannin, and haunting perfume. The wine offers a mesmerizing reminder of what patience can achieve in the hands of a master.

100pt winemaker Chris Carpenter has spent more than two decades decoding the language of Napa’s mountain vineyards, and Mt. Brave is among his most eloquent expressions. From the steep, fractured slopes of Mt. Veeder, he coaxes fruit that balances density with lift, structure with purity. The 2019 reveals that duality: a wine of formidable strength that moves with the grace of a dancer.

Now, with time having sculpted its edges to perfection, the 2019 Mt. Brave Cabernet stands at its pinnacle. It opens with an arresting purity, unfolding in layers before settling into a finish that seems to stretch toward the horizon. Mt. Brave’s 2019 vintage is mountain Cabernet at its most complete: soulful, sophisticated, and utterly compelling.

“Showcasing the lovely freshness of high-elevation Mt Veeder grapes. Vivid boysenberry and mulberry fruits give way to mountain herbs, dusty minerals and rich toasty cedar. “The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley comes from one of the coldest sites from which they farm Cabernet Sauvignon. A dark red color, the wine is forward with blue-fruited highlights and shining with notes of juniper, pine, violets, forest floor, and fresh herbs. It’s long, elegant, and focused on the palate, with a more linear feel, an even plushness of tannins, and redcurrants, cassis, and vanilla shining through to the long finish. Drink 2025-2050.”
