SONOMA COAST 2022

2022 Red Birds Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Roger Roessler’s passion for wine began as a restaurateur, opening restaurants throughout the Western United States for over 40 years. Growing up in Columbia, Illinois, he cherished fond memories of the abundant “red birds” thriving in his hometown. When presented with the opportunity to produce Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, he aimed to create a wine with vibrant red fruit characteristics, paying homage to his childhood feathered friends.

Under the Roessler and Black Pine labels, Roger has produced several award-winning Pinots. His small production, Red Birds Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, delivers the quality one would expect from him at a value price.

The 2022 growing season was excellent for the Sonoma Coast, with some summer heat countered by coastal cooling influences that helped concentrate flavors and aromas in the fruit, leading to an excellent vintage for Pinot Noir.

“The 2022 Red Birds Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir begins with a bright and inviting nose with aromas of cranberries, red cherries, violets, and nutmeg dancing out of the glass. The wine is medium-bodied on the palate with penetrating sweet/tart raspberries, red currants, and cola flavors. An excellent combination of lush richness and freshness keeps it lively and balanced, even for a riper-styled Pinot Noir. The wine’s acidity is bright and refreshing, and the soft, velvety tannins lead to a long finish with lingering notes of red fruits and spice.”

MICHEL LAROCHE et SES ENFANTS

PETIT CHABLIS
BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2022

The Chablis region is renowned for its Kimmeridgian marl, a limestone-rich clay formed over 160 million years ago from fossilized marine deposits. This unique soil imparts a distinct minerality and sharp edge to Chablis wines.

Chablis is divided into four categories based on soil and location. Petit Chablis covers vineyards that produce approachable wines with crisp acidity and vibrant fruit.

Michel Laroche, a renowned winemaker, seeks freshness, minerality, and energy in the wines he crafts from his organically farmed vineyards. His 2022 Petit Chablis was fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve the wine’s acidity and intricate flavors. This delightful and accessible Chardonnay pairs well with many dishes and offers the distinctive style Chablis is famous for.

2022 Admire By Dan Kosta Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Dan Kosta is a pioneer of domestic Pinot Noir, having co-founded Kosta Browne Winery with Michael Browne in 1997 and consistently producing award-winning wines, including Wine Spectator’s number-one wine in 2011. His passion for wine began in his early childhood growing up in Sonoma, surrounded by some of California’s finest vineyards and watching the evolution within the industry.

Admire is Dan’s newest Pinot Noir project, announced earlier this year, naming it after his admiration for the variety and paying tribute to producers that came before him and helped shape his vision.

The 2022 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is the inaugural release that celebrates the rugged coast Dan calls home and gives the same excellent qualities Dan’s wines are known for at a much lower price point.

“The Admire Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2022 begins with a deep, rich nose that includes red and black fruits, cola beans, baking spices, fresh herbs, and purple flowers. It continues on the palate with sweet black cherries, cranberries, and ripe red plums wrapped in soft, supple tannins that carry it to a long, elegant finish. These qualities allow it to be enjoyed immediately. Kudos to Dan Kosta and crew for making this high-quality easy-drinking Pinot Noir, then pricing it to be enjoyed much more regularly than its more expensive brethren.”

ANNIA WHITE BLEND
CALIFORNIA 2022

2022 Massican Annia White Blend California
Dan Petroski is a well-known (former Larkmead) winemaker in Napa Valley, and his latest creation is Annia, a white wine that’s a delight to drink.

Annia is a blend of Friulian grapes (Ribolla Gialla and Tocai Friulano) and Chardonnay, made in a Mediterranean style. This blend creates a fresh, vibrant, and approachable wine with a kaleidoscope of aromatics. The Chardonnay provides structure and acidity, while the Friulian grapes add complexity and depth.

The 2022 vintage of Annia is a lovely wine that’s pale yellow with citrus and orange blossom aromas and a palate that is fresh and lively, with peach and lemon zest flavors with an underlying thread of complex minerality, leading to a long, lingering finish.

If you enjoy interesting white wines, I think you will love this one.

AXR’s estate is a historic property founded over 130 years ago that has been a brewery, restaurant, inn, saloon, and winery with the first woman vintner in California in 1886. The property sits at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains with layers of sedimentary soils formed from eons of rainwater runoff, giving a distinct character and range of depth.

Winemaker and part-owner Jean Hoefliger was born in Switzerland and gained initial experience making wine in Bordeaux, working for Château Lynch-Bages and Château Carbonnieux, and later in South Africa at Meerlust. AXR’s 2022 Sauvignon Blanc was fermented in three different vessels, 70% in barrel, 18% in stainless steel, and 12% in concrete eggs, before five months of maturation in 20% new French oak, giving a white Bordeaux-style and mouthfeel with expressive Napa Valley fruit.
