Medical doctor-turned-winemaker Kerith Overstreet is the genius behind Bruliam, and it’s her intricate attention to detail that brings her wines energy and life. Bruliam Wines is a boutique winery producing around 1000 cases annually of single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay from some of California’s most celebrated vineyards.

Kerith’s relationships with many renowned growers secure her allocations of some of the highest quality fruit in California, hence her single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Soberanes Vineyard, the latest site developed by the Pisoni & Franscioni families. The character of Soberanes shines brilliantly in this wine with its captivating, majestic balance of complex aromas and flavors; the wine is a real over-achiever at this price.

“Dark, bright-rimmed red. Spice-tinged red fruits, incense and floral qualities on the perfumed nose, along with a building mineral topnote. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering vibrant raspberry and cherry, rose pastille and exotic spice flavors that show fine delineation and appealing sweetness. Deeply flavored but graceful as well, finishing on a gently tannic note, with strong, red-fruit- and spice-driven tenacity.”

2017 Black Kite Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands
Black Kite Cellars produces highly-textured, expressive Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from exceptional coastal vineyards. For them, wine is a journey that combines high aspirations with a long term commitment, patience, and fortitude. Their journey began in 2003 with the inaugural vintage and led them to Jeff Gaffner, who became their winemaker in 2005. In 2010, it steered them to the Soberanes Vineyard, now producing this extraordinary Pinot Noir.

The wine team forged this remarkable wine from three rows of vines out of the Soberanes Vineyard, planted to the Pisoni Clone. The vineyard is synonymous with excellence and is the latest site developed by the Pisoni’s & Franscioni’s, whose families have been farming the area for over 100 years.

Winemaker Jeff Gaffner gained fame helping make the renowned 1996 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cépages, which became the Wine Spectator’s #1 wine of the year. Jeff fermented this Pinot with Burgundian yeast and performed punch-downs three times daily, contributing to the remarkable textures and flavor extraction of this very special Pinot.

“Shimmering magenta. Deep-pitched red and blue fruit aromas pick up hints of vanilla and exotic spices with air. Fleshy and subtly chewy on the palate, offering appealingly sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that become livelier through the midpalate. Closes long and spicy, with a repeating vanilla note and steadily building tannins…”

“Our 2017 Soberanes Vineyard Pinot Noir is a deeply expressive wine that opens with beguiling bottle brush and sweet tea aromas that give way to a complex core of black fruit, cassis and clove. The rich, round mouthfeel is met with just enough tannic traction to sustain the compelling fruit intensity throughout the long finish. Enjoy upon release or cellar for up to 4-6 years.”

2015 SYRAH
SOBERANES VINEYARD

One of the fastest growing categories in our shop is high-quality California Syrah at value prices.  Many would argue that in the New World, Americans are a little behind the curve in the appreciation of Syrah and because of this, that you can occasionally find a ridiculous deal on a fantastic wine.  A perfect example is the 2015 DANIEL Syrah from the iconic Soberanes Vineyard.  This two barrel production Syrah opens up to sweet violets, pulverized blackberries, compact black cherries, smoked meats, white pepper and charcuterie.  And while you might expect to pay around $50-$70/btl for a single vineyard Syrah from Soberanes, you might just want to grab 2.5% of their entire production… Which in this case is a 15-pack.

Some of the greatest California Syrah comes from the Santa Lucia Highlands, and one of the best spots there is the Soberanes Vineyard.  The 2015 perfectly illustrates the best qualities from this vineyard which were brought to life by winemaker Dan Fitzgerald, who got his start working at Williams-Selyem.  As the wine unfolds in the glass, rich and inviting flavors envelope your palate in pure elegance, and become increasingly compelling as the wine opens up.  At this price, I wouldn’t hesitate to secure yours…

Tasting Notes: “This unique blend begins with a compact nose of Bing cherry, wet slate, cotton candy and a touch of sweet vanilla spice.  On the palate, it begins with focused black plum, penetrating wild red and black berries and Ibarra Chocolate. The finish is mouth-filling without being cloying, with just the right amount of dusty tannin, cocoa powder and a touch of baking spices.”

2015 PINOT NOIR
SOBERANES VINEYARD

If an individual vineyard’s unique terroir along with all of the nuances and complexities that it’s capable of producing were a voice, the Soberanes Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands would be one of the loudest and most beautiful in the New World.  The vineyard has become synonymous with excellence and is becoming more and more well known for producing fruit with otherworldly complexity. It’s easy to get excited when you see its name printed on a label, and wineries like Roar, Lucia and Black Kite all make single vineyard Pinots from it.  Bruliam Soberanes embraces clarity and definition and leaps from the glass with ripe boysenberry, mineral-laced cherries, wild rose, dark plum and holiday spices. With the average price of Pinot Noir from Soberanes estimated to be upwards of $50/btl, I strongly recommend making some serious room for this one..

Created from 100% Pisoni Clone, Soberanes is the latest vineyard planted by the Pisoni’s & Franscioni’s, whose families have been farming the area for over 100 years.  Bruliam brilliantly expresses the remarkably distinct flavors and textures that this vineyard is becoming known for.  It was strategically guided from grape to bottle by medical doctor-turned-winemaker Kerith Overstreet and this charming and sophisticated Pinot Noir should not be missed.

There are plenty of reasons why we love Fort Ross Pinot Noirs.  Their winemaking is second to none with Jeff Pisoni calling the shots. Further, their prices have also remained realistic over the years, despite the growing fan base and well-deserved scores.  The number one thing that keeps me coming back year-after-year is the ideal location of their vineyard… It’s centered in the idyllic Fort Ross Seaview AVA, which in 2011 was approved as its own Appellation within the Sonoma Coast, the area is also a source for such notables as Peter Michael, Marcassin, Martinelli, Flowers and Pahlmeyer, to list a few…

In winemaking, two can sometimes be better than one…  When combining two of the most iconic vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands, the tension created between the two sites can create a stunningly complex flavor performance, with the distinctions from each site filling in where the other might not, and in the end balancing each-other out in a way that you can only get from multiple sites.  The 2014 Matias Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay is an absolute perfect example.  A remarkable fusion of Sierra Mar and Soberanes fruit, this Chardonnay truly has it all.  We weren’t the only ones that loved it… Robert Parker and the Wine Enthusiast gave this beauty a 90 Point Score.
The statement about two sometimes being better than one doesn’t just stop at the vineyard.  This sensational Chardonnay was co-authored by talented winemaking-duo Dan Fitzgerald, who worked at Williams-Selyem and John Harley, who worked at Donum Estate… Calling on the talents and expertise from both of them, they’re able to create a Chardonnay that stands out among the rest.  Don’t be fooled by the low price, this Chardonnay tastes like it should be about double the price…

Everybody loves an amazing value and particularly when it comes to Pinot Noir.  This 92 point Pinot bears origins from two of the Santa Lucia Highlands most acclaimed vineyards.  A blend of Soberanes and Sierra Mar Vineyards, Robert Parker alerts his readers, “it’s a rock solid example of the high quality Pinot Noirs coming from the Santa Lucia Highlands.”  Both vineyards are well-known for producing wines of notable character, intriguing flavors and compelling qualities, and finding a Pinot from both of these sites pushes the absolute limits of exceptionally high quality for an amazingly low price.  This wine retails at $40/btl at the winery.
