2020 PINOT NOIR
SANTA RITA HILLS

2020 Luli Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills
Seeking to create a new line of handcrafted wines from top-notch fruit at affordable prices, Luli was launched in 2007 by the combined knowledge, skills, and experience of Master Sommelier Sara Floyd, vineyard manager Mark Pisoni, and winemaker Jeff Pisoni. The Pisoni brothers grew up farming in the Santa Lucia Highlands with their father Gary, one of California’s most respected growers, sourcing fruit for Luli from vineyards in or near the same land they call home.

Wine is life for Sara and the Pisoni brothers, so the desire to bring family and friends together to swirl a glass of fine wine for a reasonable price is a passion for all three. Possibly one of the best winemaking teams in history, this successful partnership illustrates the talents and strengths of three different masterminds in each vintage and every glass poured.

“The 2020 Luli Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir begins with an intriguing nose that includes fresh strawberries, English rose petals, cotton candy, and Autumn baking spices. The palate mimics these traits, adding cherry cola, red plums, liquid minerals, and a bright freshness combined with a supple texture that beautifully rounds this wine out. Drink it now, and over the next six to eight years.”

“Especially for an appellation blend, this is a wondrous, regionally indicative bottling, starting with clean and fresh aromas of honeysuckle, Asian pear and lime pith. There’s a flashy sizzle of acidity on the sip, where lily and honeysuckle flavors meet with kiwi and restrained guava, wrapped up in a delicate texture.”

If you’ve ever wondered whether a winemaker’s passion for their artistry could manifest itself directly into the flavors and personality of the wine they produce, just take one sip of ANY of Brian Loring’s Pinot Noirs and you’ll know… His passion for the Pinot Noir grape began in Burgundy and was later propelled by the wines of Josh Jensen (Calera), and from there reached Williams Selyem, Chalone, Sanford and Cottonwood Canyon.  The level of passion that he has for the varietal adds another dimension to his winemaking which is absolutely on-point.  His Pinot Noirs are revered for their ability to express terroir and for their uncanny levels of balance and charisma.  At this price, they should not be missed.

We often note that vineyard owners have a clear advantage when it comes to selecting grapes for their own wines and knowing when to pick… They know their land like nobody else, and Brian recognized that and sought out some of California’s best Pinot Noir vineyards, then instructed the owners of each vineyard to treat the Loring blocks exactly the same way as they treat the blocks for the wines they produce for themselves.  A perfect example is his single vineyard Pinot from Kessler-Haak Vineyard, which expresses in vivid detail the remarkable complexity and deep, saturating flavors that this vineyard is able to produce and was the highlight of our tasting…

A charge of boisterous black raspberry and blackberry fruit greets the palate, fills every nook and cranny in the mouth, and exits with aplomb. Everybody loves rooting for the winning team and when your team is performing at the top of their game, contagious levels of jubilation fill the room.  Likewise, the bouquet on the Two Sisters Lindsay’s Vineyard Pinot filled our tasting room and induced similar feelings of excitement.  After all, this is another winner brought to us by Bill Foley who’s winning streak of wine and hockey has no limits. Charging from the glass like his Golden Knights on a break-away play, with crushed candied fruits, wild rose, spice box and white pepper that weave in and out in perfect formation.  Big, powerful and complex, like a dominant starting line-up, but with as much brawn as this Pinot displays, it has a feminine touch of detail, balance and finesse which makes it incredibly appealing.  This wine will have your friends and family cheering for another sip.

Emerging from the Lindsay’s Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills AVA, an area that’s revered for producing Pinot Noirs with exceptional aromatics, terrific acidity and remarkable focus, this Pinot made me want to grab my stick and get in the game.  With a 93 Point Score and a price that leave you pounding the glass, you’ll want to make a power-play on this one…

2015 CHARDONNAY
SANTA RITA HILLS
Transcending value at levels previously uncharted, if I could tell you the fruit source and winemaker behind this Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay,  you wouldn’t hesitate to secure a case.  Some things in life are better kept secret, because if details on the winemaker and vineyard sources were disclosed, the wine would retail for a much higher price.  Created in a fresh, vibrant style, exquisite flavors wrap your palate in a delicate opulence, laced with lemon drops, nectarine, warm apple, tangerine oil and melon.   At under thirty per bottle, it’ll leave your taste buds yearning for another sip and your wallet looking for more.
This gorgeous wine is from the region thrust into the spotlight in 2004 with the debut of the hit movie Sideways. The Santa Rita Hills AVA is known for producing wines with exceptional aromatics, terrific acidity and remarkable focus. While the movie highlighted a few stars including Sanford, Foxen and Sea Smoke, there are approximately 60 vineyards inside the Santa Rita Hills AVA, and most have been planted within the last two decades.  If you’re looking for a top quality white wine to enjoy anytime, you may want to grab a case or two of this while supplies last.
