2013 Cabaud Benedictions Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
What do you get when you combine the highest level of winemaking with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Andy Beckstoffer’s heritage vineyards in Oakville?  You get a wine that competes with the best in the world… Many of you know winemaker Luc Morlet from his work at Newton Cellars, Peter Michael, or from his own label Morlet which is raking in 100 point scores…  We brought you another wine from Cabaud earlier this year that many of you said was one of the best that you had ever tasted.  The 2013 Benedictions is the top wine produced at Cabaud and it’s made from the iconic Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard in Oakville.  The previous vintage caught the eye of Robert Parker who scored the 2012 94-96 Points and the new vintage is even better…

Finding new wines made by top winemakers, that are somewhat unheard of, pays off big at times… I would estimate Morlet’s Cabs to range from $165 to around $300/btl.  At $150 Cabaud is a killer deal…I cannot put into words how incredible this wine is.  Wines of this caliber and at this price never last long… I wouldn’t hesitate to secure yours.   Make sure to sign up for our email list to unlock special offers.

Tasting Notes: An intense, glass-staining purple color combines beautifully with flavors of blueberry pie filling, with muddled blackberries, red currant, bramble, white flowers and bakers chocolate. The supple, full-bodied opulence, sweet tannin, and rich, dense center core intermingle with the powerful fruit to seduce you with the first sip. The finish is long, powerful and supple with just enough fruit tannins to allow this one to age for a decade or so.  Kudos to Luke Morlet for crafting such a stunning wine.”  96 Points, Kevin M. 2015 Witchery Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
Have you ever wondered what it takes to become an elite Cabernet producer in Napa Valley?  Topping the list are: a vineyard location capable of producing world-class fruit; an experienced and exceptionally gifted winemaker; then a proprietor that has a laser-like focus targeted to his goals without ever sacrificing quality.  The last piece of the puzzle is beautiful packaging and an intriguing name that matches what’s in the bottle… Witchery checks off every box on this list with their Oakville fruit sourced from a vineyard that sits directly South of Opus One.

Winemaker Grant Long Jr, whose growing list of accomplishments is absolutely undeniable, and is a valuable piece to this puzzle.  In 2015, Witchery’s proprietors steadfast focus led them to scale back production by nearly two thirds, focusing on their top vineyards.  And the packaging, I think it speaks for itself.

Witchery’s 2015 Oakville Reserve flaunts a vivid perfume, accented by majestic levels of blackberry fruit, intertwined with white chocolate, crushed rock, violets and black coffee. This brooding charm was imprisoned for nearly two years in 100% new French oak barrels.  With a mere 6 barrels produced, add some of this remarkable wine to your cellar right away.

2014 ENCOSTA
CABERNET SAUVIGNON

When considering a list of the most noble terroirs in Napa Valley, Pritchard Hill is always near the top of my list.  Composed of compacted volcanic rock, with iron-red soils, the area has been hailed by some as as Napa’s Grand Cru.  Apex producers Chappellet, Bryant Family, Colgin, Continuum and David Arthur all call the area home.  A rapidly rising producer on Pritchard Hill is Gandona Estate.  The wines are expertly made by Philippe Melka, whose vast experience includes winemaking at Bryant Family, Quintessa, Hundred Acre, and Dominus…

Encosta Cabernet remains a stunning value for Pritchard Hill. Carved into the steep terrain, the Estate vineyard was planted in small blocks, each with its own distinct personality.  The vineyard was planted by Jim Barbour, one of the absolute top viticulturists, who’s list of clients include icons like Hundred Acre, Grace Family and Barbour to list a few… The best Pritchard Hill wines are memorable with profound sense of place, balance and primal intensity.  Gandona’s Encosta has all of this and more, and it’s a fraction of the price of what you’d expect to pay for a great wine from this Iconic area.

From Vinous:Gandona’s 2014 Encosta is a gorgeous second wine. Bright, aromatic and intense, the Encosta possesses striking purity in its flavors. Dark cherry, chocolate, mocha and licorice infuse the super-expressive finish. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha and espresso. The Encosta clearly offers the pedigree of many top labels, but perhaps just not the depth. This is an impressive showing.” 91 Points
From James Suckling, “Aromas of dark berries and basil follow through to a full body, chewy tannins and a medium finish. Builds nice at the end with some raspberry character...” 92 Points

TWO BARREL PRODUCTION
Great things can come from a steadfast focus on your core strengths and attributes. Witchery epitomizes this and with their 2015 vintage they’ve scaled back production by nearly two thirds, producing only limited quantities of their three flagship wines, Howell Mountain, Oakville and Proprietary Red.  The two barrel production of their Howell Mountain Reserve casts spells of rich and enchanting flavors of mystic dark berries, crushed rock, violets and black cherry.  With the micro-production and macro quality, there will be a lot of people on the hunt for their most limited Howell Mountain Cuvée…
Held captive for nearly two years in new French oak barrels… this towering, prodigious effort emanates with majestic levels of boysenberry, roasted coffee beans, and cigar box.  This truly top-level Howell Mountain wine shouldn’t be missed and for those of you who’ve tasted any of Witchery’s wines over the years… no other information is needed other than here’s another brilliant wine from a producer that we adore.
