2013 La Rasina Brunello Di Montalcino

LA RASINA

2013 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
MONTALCINO, ITALY

Classic, profound, detailed, all perfectly describe La Rasina’s 96 point Brunello di Montalcino. The wine is intensely aromatic, focused and persistent.  The winery continues to make investments in their vineyards and winemaking, and just when we thought they couldn’t get any better, they did… La Rasina has been one of our most popular Brunellos in the shop for years, and this vintage is at an entirely new level of detail and enchantment. The 2013 is noticeably more masculine and powerfully structured with and deep layers of mineral laced red fruits, iron, Spring violets and spiced plum.  At $49.99, this Brunello truly has it all…

One of the few remaining wineries in Montalcino that’s owned and farmed by a Montalcino born family, La Rasina was founded nearly 1/2 century ago.  The Estate shows a palpable dedication to excellence which is obvious in a glass of this stunning 2013 Brunello.  Further refined in oak barrels for two years, the 2013 enters from another outstanding vintage in Montalcino and one the Wine Spectator describes as producing, “balanced Brunellos with vibrant structures.”  I highly recommend a case of this classic and high-scoring Brunello.

2013 Livio Sassetti Pertimali Brunello Di Montalcino
If you could only drink only one Brunello di Montalcino, what would it be?  Robert Parker wrote “it would have to be Pertimali.”  The only problem is they’re a microscopic Italian producer owning only 7 hectares (about 17 acres), and they’re highly-desired…  That desire turns into more of a frenzy when Pertimali scores 98 Points like it has this vintage, and we don’t expect our allocation to last.  Seldom do I taste a wine that’s so incredibly enthralling that it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up… This one did and Antonio Galloni wrote that Livio Sassetti is “One of Italy’s finest,” and they’ve been making hits since 1982…  With the near perfect score this vintage, my only guarantee is that once you taste it, you will wish you bought more…

Absolutely hands-on in every way possible, each individual wine is hand-tended by Livio and his two sons.  With attention to every detail, their Brunello has become a Sommelier favorite, gracing the Grand Award winning wine lists of Emeril Lagasse, Thomas Keller and many others as well…  Because of the minuscule production, there’s simply never enough of this wine to satisfy demand.  I strongly recommend securing your case, before this one runs out…

2015 Il Borro ‘Toscana’ Tuscany, Italy

IL BORRO

2015 TOSCANA
TUSCANY, ITALY

Moving another step closer to their goal of producing the best Bordeaux styled blend outside of Bordeaux, and with a monster 97 Point score, Salvatore Ferragamo’s Il Borro from their family estate in Tuscany simply blew me away.  Many of the same attributes that led the Ferragamo’s to become one of the top luxury brands in the world, are also key in creating a wine brand at the highest level. Like their clothing line, their wine is powerfully bold, yet gorgeously elegant and remarkably detailed. With no expense spared, the family purchased 700 hectares in Tuscany which included the hilltop town of Il Borro (depicted on the label,) which they named this flagship wine after.  While you may not want to plunk down the steep tariff for a pair of their shoes, you can board the Ferragamo train and enjoy some of their stunning wine…

The 2015 laces together 50% Merlot, dressed with 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and is then precisely detailed with other varietals.  After meticulously hand sorting each grape, the wine is sent gravity flow into the tank where 10-20% of the juice is removed to increase concentration… James Suckling calls the 2015 the best Il Borro to date and at under $100/btl this is absolutely one of the best Tuscan wines that I’ve tasted.

2013 Fanti Brunello Di Montalcino

FANTI

2013 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
MONTALCINO, ITALY

2013 Fanti Brunello Di Montalcino
The best Brunello is like an opera: powerful, dramatic, and sophisticated, with long-held notes and a plot-line of great weight and complexity...” Wine Enthusiast.  Fanti’s 2013 Brunello di Montalcino defines this statement with an opening act that effortlessly engages you, followed by a perfectly choreographed and dynamically elegant performance that will have your palate (and wallet) begging for an encore.  The Fanti family has been producing wine for nearly 200 years and the quality of their wines were elevated to new levels in the 1970’s when a new owner took the reigns.  Filippo soon redesigned the plantings and added an innovation-meets-tradition winemaking technique that propelled the wine to the next level.  At under $50 their 2013 Brunello is a tough act to follow…

With attention to every detail in the vineyard and the winery, their style is one of elegance, vibrant fruit, and stunning persistence.  And the 2013 comes from one of the area’s best vintage, one that the Wine Enthusiast alerts readers that, “If you want to experience the energy, elegance and age-worthy structure that first drew wine lovers and collectors to Brunello di Montalcino decades ago, then 2013 is your vintage.”   I highly recommend securing a case of this classic 93 Point Brunello.

2013 Aldo Conterno Barolo Bussia
When considering a list of Barolo’s top producers, it would be impossible to exclude Aldo Conterno. Inspired by the modern style of Angelo Gaja, Aldo cut a path that includes both modern and old worlds.  Old world Barolos are know for tannins and heavy structure, which allows them to age forever, however they often need to be cellared for years before consuming.  The more modern Barolos are accessible after just a few years in the bottle and they open up to be brilliant and compelling wines that are easy to love.  The 2013 Barolo Bussia has already earned 96 Points from James Suckling and offers a gorgeous expression of Nebbiollo.  It’s a wine that will leave you thinking about it for days after trying it.
Bussia, one of the “cru” vineyard/districts located in the commune of Monforte d’Alba is one of the most desirable growing areas in Barolo and is famous for the dynamic terroir which expresses a penetrating structure and focused concentration of fruit.   Aldo’s Barolo Bussia comes from three distinct blocks in Bussia and offers old world complexity with new world accessibility.  At under $100/btl there are few Barolos in my mind that would compare.

BIBBIANO

2014 Bibbiano Riserva Chianti Classico2014 RISERVA
CHIANTI CLASSICO

As much as I love the innovative and forward styles of New World wines (wines from countries where Vitis Vinifera or wine grapes did NOT originate), there’s something to be said about a winery that’s been around in the Old World (think Europe) since 1865.  With trials and tribulations that span more than 150 years, many of the best wines in the Old World give you that feeling of antiquity and historical relevance when you taste them.  I gained that very impression when I tasted Bibbiano’s Chianti Classico Riserva.  With rock-solid poise, immense depth and precisely delineated flavors, the wine’s powerfully complex dark fruits, spices and subtle smoke are classic to the Old World style, and are intermixed with a newfound love and appreciation for a region that produces some of the best wines in the world.

Created from 100% Sangiovese and aged for the required 24 months before bottling, this wine has a lovely dense and satiny texture that comes lined with spices, dried flowers and cassis.  At under thirty per bottle this Riserva has everything that I look for in great Chianti Classico.  I wouldn’t wait for the scores to come out before securing your case, because there are few cases imported of this stunning wine.

How much would you expect to pay for a great bottle of Barolo? On a list of fifty 2013 Barolos that scored 93 Points by the Wine Spectator, the average price was $81 per bottle… At $39.99 Giovanni Rosso’s 2013 Barolo got my attention.  I love great Italian wine… so much that when I come across one that hits my palate just right, that’s priced right as well, I grab as much as I can… Giovanni Rosso’s 2013 Barolo reflects this perfectly, and at under forty per bottle this 93 point Barolo is an absolute classic, offering a pleasure-induced bouquet of dried violets, tart raspberry, pipe tobacco with hints of wild mint.  It’s unbelievably good for the price…
2013 was an exceptional year for Barolo and the Wine Spectator rated the overall vintage 97 points, saying that it’s the best since 2010.  On the palate this wine is both elegant and finely sculpted with excellent form and noticeable sophistication.  The 2013 has so much elegance that it’s really hard to resist now and can be enjoyed immediately or cellared for a couple decades.  Barolos this good that are priced this low never stick around for very long…  I highly recommend grabbing a case while this one is available.

Odds are, when three top wine critics in the US positively agree on a wine, it will appeal to aSalcheto Riserva broad audience. Yes, taste is  subjective, but truly great wine can transcend subjectivity and appeal to a much wider range of palates, simply because it’s an excellent representation, is perfectly balanced and has a set of indescribable qualities that is compelling for just about any wine lover. With triple 92-93 point scores and a price that’s fairly easy to swallow (pun, intended), I strongly recommend trying this one.

Emerging from Tuscany’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, this stunning Riserva spends the required 2 full years in oak and a year in the bottle before release.  With Sangiovese making up 90% of the final blend, the 2012 has a scrumptious bouquet lined with dark berries and wild plum, then on the palate the wine is deep, seductive and velvety.  With about 30 cases available, we don’t expect this wine to last very long…
