CABERNET SAUVIGNON
NAPA VALLEY 2019

2019 Fortune 1621 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Fortune 1621 is a value Cabernet Sauvignon founded by the Bump family, proud owners of Darms Lane Winery, located just South of Yountville in the Oak Knoll District. Their vineyards lay in the shadows of the Mayacamas Mountain Range, in an area cooler than many other parts of Napa Valley, where Bordeaux varieties flourish.

The Bump family hired winemaker Brian Mox in 2003, elevating the quality of their wines to new heights. Mox gained his Enology degree from UC Davis and honed his skills at notable wineries Etude, Lewis Cellars, and Laird Family Estates. He creates this beautifully balanced Napa Valley Cabernet by combing estate fruit with small grower vineyards in Oak Knoll, St. Helena, and Rutherford, crafted to represent Napa Valley as a whole while offering uncompromising quality.

“Fortune 1621’s 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon hosts a variety of enticing aromas beginning with lavender potpourri, black currants, ripe blueberries, chai spice, and a melted Hershey’s milk chocolate bar. On the palate, the wine’s powerful flavors of red plums, gingerbread, and sweet balsamic reduction coat the mouth with plush, velvety tannins that help carry the sublime finish. To me, this wine says, “the door’s always open,” with its amiable approachability that will gain some savory complexity with aging but is ready whenever you are.”

2019 AXR Proprietary Red Napa Valley
If vines could speak, AXR’s historic St. Helena estate’s vines would have stories as juicy as their fruit, chronicled for 134 years as the property transitioned from a brewery, restaurant, inn, saloon, and winery, including having one of the first female winemakers in California in 1886. Today the winery celebrates Napa’s progress and innovation, helping elevate the valley’s name to the high-quality standing wine lovers worldwide seek.

Winemaker Jean Hoefliger draws on his experiences working in the cellars at Chateau Carbonnieux and Chateau Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux, bringing a Grand Cru Classé prestige to his Napa Valley masterpieces. This Proprietary Red Blend is a classic Left Bank style with 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, but for a much friendlier price than a comparable quality French Bordeaux. The 2019 vintage is rocking right now and will continue to improve over the next decade or more.

NAPA VALLEY

2019 Duckhorn Merlot Napa Valley
The Duckhorn name is synonymous with Merlot due to Dan Duckhorn’s passion for the classic Bordeaux varietal, which he initially planted in the Napa Valley in 1978. His love for Merlot started after a trip to Bordeaux, France, and he vowed to grow it just as beautifully in Napa Valley, improving its reputation in the New World.

Duckhorn’s Napa Valley Merlot is a blend of some of the winery’s most iconic vineyards, including the Napa side of Carneros fruit chosen for its proximity to the cooling effects of the Pacific Ocean, which play a vital role in contributing brightness to this wine. The 2019 vintage began with abundant rainfall, followed by a long, warm summer with foggy mornings and the absence of significant heat spikes helping to preserve freshness, vibrance, depth of color, and overall structure. This vintage ranks among their best yet for their beloved Napa Valley Merlot. Our tasting panel members were all commenting on how it was the best Duckhorn Napa Merlot in recent memory, and possibly ever.

Flowers Vineyards and Winery founders were among the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA early pioneers recognizing the potential of growing cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the rugged, isolated Sonoma Coast. Their organic and biodynamic approach to farming is part of their continued commitment to respect the environment and cultivate healthier vines for higher quality wines.

The 2019 vintage started quite cool with some snow on the estate that helped oxygenate the soils, bringing vital nutrients to the vines. The cool coastal temperatures throughout the summer allowed for slow ripening and intricate flavor development that is unforgettably irresistible, resulting in this remarkable expression of coastal Pinot Noir.

THE OFFERING

2019 Sans Liege Co-Ferment The Offering

Sans Liege’s winemaker Curt Schalchin has an affinity for wines of the Southern Rhône because of their kaleidoscope of complex aromas and flavors. Relying on his intuition, he prudently monitors his vineyard’s unique microclimates from Paso Robles to Solvang, seeking finesse, distinct terroir, and unrestrained character.

The winery describes The Offering as a quest for independence, giving an homage to the Southern Rhone but made with the freedoms of New World winemaking. The Offering Co-Ferment is a small side production with the same recipe as its sister wine with 30% whole cluster Grenache, destemmed Syrah with 25% of the stems returned, and 100% destemmed Mourvèdre. The critical difference is that all grapes were fermented together in the same vessel giving a heightened integration of the three varietals, resulting in a superior version of the same blend that everyone on our tasting panel wants to buy.

“The 2019 Sans Liege The Offering Co-Ferment is something extraordinary. The moment our tasting panel tried it, we all wanted to buy some. Its compelling nose is deep, exotic, and a little spicy, with wild currants, jasmine tea, cold charcuterie, and dried English rose petals. The complimentary palate follows with an untamed tension between the primary and secondary flavors, revealing very concentrated and focused fruits that carry an incredible freshness, surrounded by a supporting cast of flavors that beautifully carry it through a long, complex finish. What a delightful find.”

“The Castello Romitorio 2019 RomiTòro is a generous Tuscan blend of Petit Verdot and Syrah… This is a terrific value from a vintage that delivers excellent balance, intensity and richness.
