A former number one wine-of-the-year on our top five list, Barnett’s Rattlesnake Hill Cabernet Sauvignon traces its illustrious journey back to 1991, when its debut vintage earned a heartfelt, handwritten letter from Robert Parker. Parker, compelled to write only for the third time in his career, enclosed a personal check for two cases for his cellar, an unprecedented gesture that signaled a bright future for this wine.

Perched on a rugged knoll at 2,050 feet, this Cabernet Sauvignon originates from the most cherished parcel of Barnett’s Spring Mountain estate. Each bottle tells the story of an intense selection process, as winemaker David Tate meticulously chooses only the finest barrels from their estate fruit to craft a wine that is, above all, a celebration of purity and intensity.

The Barnett team’s dedication to traditional winemaking techniques and close attention to every production detail has anchored them as a true icon of Spring Mountain for over three decades. This Cabernet Sauvignon represents the pinnacle of their work, a testament to their vision and a showcase of their expertise on every level.

“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Rattlesnake Cabernet Sauvignon erupts from the glass with powerful notes of creme de cassis, blackberry preserves, and plum pudding giving way to wafts of lavender oil, crushed rocks, Chinese five spice, and tar. The full-bodied palate is jam packed with black fruit preserves and exotic spice flavors, framed by velvety tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and opulent.”

Hal and Fiona Barnett founded Barnett Vineyards in 1983, producing varietally pure, polished, and powerful wines stemming from their commitment to sustainable practices with minimal intervention in the winemaking process. For over three decades, they’ve sourced their Chardonnay from the legendary Sangiacomo Vineyard in Carneros, earning access to some of the vineyards’ best blocks, including El Novillero, Vella, and Catarina.

The progress of barrel fermentation and later malolactic fermentation are routinely monitored by the winemaking team, sampling wine from each barrel to maintain the desired balance in the wine, resulting in a beautifully polished Chardonnay.

The 2021 release is a testament to the team’s deep understanding of Sangiacomo terroir and the fruit, revealing a remarkable equilibrium of flavors. All this set against the backdrop of an exceptional vintage, this Chardonnay is a joy to behold.

Our tasting panel tastes thousands and thousands of wines every year, many of them super high-scoring. Even so, there are very few that are so mind-bogglingly great from the first sip that they virtually require you to continue discovering their secrets. The 2018 Barnett Rattlesnake Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain is undoubtedly one of those super-compelling wines that dials everything into perfection. It begins with a very intriguing nose, including black currants, graphite, light menthol, cocoa powder, and the aromas of walking through a cedar grove after rainfall. It continues with a very compact, concentrated palate of muddled blackberries, black raspberries, baker’s chocolate, and saline minerals, along with hints of green peppercorn. Then, just saying the finish is long and complex is an understatement. The waves of balanced fruits and flavors not only dance across your palate for over a minute, but they also penetrate your very being. This stunner is a spectacular bottle of wine, and I can’t wait until the next time I get to taste it again.”

SANGIACOMO VINEYARD

Barnett produces supremely balanced wines that are varietally appropriate and locationally transparent. They achieve this through selecting the right location and taking a hands-on, attentive approach to winemaking. Winemaker David Tate regularly samples juice from each barrel during fermentation, stopping malolactic fermentation on a barrel-by-barrel basis to preserve balance. Their 2019 Sangiacomo Vineyard Chardonnay is sensational and perfectly reflects the winery’s commitment to producing world-class wine.

The winery has produced Chardonnay from Sangiacomo for 28 vintages; thus, they can access some of the best blocks. Their 2019 combines El Novillero, Vella, and Catarina blocks. Each block is fermented separately in small batches before aging Sur Lie for ten months in French oak.

Winemaker David Tate has crafted Barnett since 2007, and he previously spent five years at Ridge, where he helped make their iconic Monte Bello Cabernet. His years at Ridge laid the groundwork for his commitment to quality and understanding what it takes to produce world-class wine with a sense of place.

2016 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
SPRING MOUNTAIN DISTRICT

Spring Mountain Cabernet is unique to the other Mountainous growing regions in Napa Valley because it produces classically structured Mountain fruit, but with more perceived suppleness than the others.  I’m also drawn to the complexity and savory undertones that often show themselves in Spring Mountain wines.  I regularly find notes of eucalyptus, bay leaves, forest floor and a range of detailed spices.  They can also be profoundly floral.  One of the best examples of classically made Spring Mountain Cabernet is Barnett’s 2016.  It’s created with 100% Spring Mountain fruit from both Barnett’s high-elevation Estate Vineyard and neighboring York Creek.  At under $100 this wine perfectly expresses the profound qualities that I look for in Spring Mountain Cabernet.

Fruit for Barnett’s 2016 Spring Mountain District Cabernet was harvested on six separate days ranging from late September through late October.  Each lot was aged separately for 22 months in oak before winemaker David Tate combined them into perfection.  David has been winemaker at Barnett since 2007 and before that he spent 5 years at Ridge, helping to craft their iconic Monte Bello Cabernet.  If you love Mountain fruit, you’ll want to make some room in the cellar for this one.  It’s ready to enjoy now and will age gracefully for 10-12 years.

Blended of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot, 9% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District is deep purple-black in color and offers up baked blackberries, crème de cassis and fruitcake scents with hints of spice box and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, firm, chewy and with a lively line, it delivers uncomplicated baked berries flavors and an herbal lift on the finish.”91 Points
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Spring Mountain District) packs quite a bit of punch, yet is also incredibly polished and sophisticated. Soft curves and silky tannins push forward a gorgeous core of dark red and purplish berry fruit, with pretty floral and spice overtones that develop over time. Open-knit and racy in the glass, the 2016 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is an especially accessible young Spring Mountain Cabernet.”  92 Points
