Kristof Nils Anderson, the former Lewis winemaker and founding winemaker at Gargiulo Vineyards in Oakville and Scribe in Sonoma, is known for making tannins “dance” on the palate in his terroir distinctive wines. His wines have extended aging potential and the proven ability to evolve magically in the cellar. Pella represents the epitome of his remarkable talent and artistry in crafting age-worth wines of the highest caliber.
 
The Star Vineyard in Rutherford is farmed by one of Napa Valley’s greatest viticulturists, David Abreu, producing sultry Cabernet Sauvignon fruit of admirable quality. This vineyard, ideally situated on a sweet spot of the Rutherford Bench, is the next vineyard to the South of BV’s #10 Vineyard and adjacent to BV#1, which goes into BV’s flagship Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Optimally cellared, the 2007 vintage is at a pinnacle of drinkability with its decade-plus of bottle-age that worked some real magic in that time.

“The Cabernet Sauvignons from Pella contain Rutherford fruit from the Star Vineyard and are a glimpse into a rare time-capsule from the mid-2000s. Unfortunately, winemaker Cristof Anderson only produced a handful of vintages. Still, those he created are a spectacular example of what perfectly-aged, high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon can become over time. The 2007 vintage begins with a nose including concentrated black cherry juice, ground espresso, dried sage, dark chocolate, crushed granite, iron, and elegant florals. A very concentrated, compact palate follows, with penetrating red fruits and deep, supple black fruits that combine black tea, blackberries, and red currants, along with an immense amount of complexity. The complex flavors and aromas form waves of intensity that wash over your palate, then recede, evolving in a way that few wines do. The finish is unexpectedly long and ultimately satisfying, with poise, elegance, grace, and intensity that leave you wanting more and more.”

Throughout his career, acclaimed Napa Valley vintner Jayson Pahlmeyer became increasingly enamored by Burgundian wines, leading him to search for the world’s finest vineyards for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the early 1990s. After a deal fell through in Burgundy, Jayson’s winemaker Helen Turley brought him to an organic farm for sale on the extreme Sonoma Coast that she felt had all the essential elements to be the ‘La Tache of California.’
 
Jayson purchased the property in 1998, and legendary viticulturist David Abreu planted the Wayfarer vineyard in 2002. The fruit was initially blended into Russian River fruit for the Pahlmeyer label until 2012, when the exceptionally high quality of the harvest demanded a brand of its own. Each block for the 2018 vintage was handpicked before sunrise and hand-sorted to guarantee only the healthiest grapes selected, producing elegantly structured wines with intense flavors, bright acidity, and incredible precision.

In 1998, David Abreu and Rick Forman planted a tiny 1.3-acre plot at the top of Howell Mountain at an elevation of 1780 feet. Each vintage, the Savory Estate vineyard shows off its vast potential with powerfully concentrated fruit, rock-solid structure, and supreme ageability, that’s vividly depicted in Rudius’s 2018 vintage.
 
Jeff Ames began his winemaking career interning with Lynn Penner-Ash in Oregon and later worked as Thomas Rivers Brown’s assistant winemaker for Outpost, Schrader, and TOR before becoming the head winemaker for TOR in 2005. The Savory Estate vineyard provides Jeff with the pieces to the puzzle that make up his hedonistic signature style, with past vintages scoring well into the upper 90s. In 1996, Claude and Katherine Blankiet had the opportunity to view an undeveloped hillside property behind Dominus’ Napanook vineyard and purchased the site without hesitation, naming it Paradise Hills. The vineyard experiences a cooler terroir than other parts of Napa Valley due to its eastern exposure with bright sunny mornings and cool, shady afternoons, preserving natural acidity as temperatures rise later in the day, producing exquisitely balanced, focused fruit.
 
Viticulturist David Abreu and winemaker Helen Turley extensively studied the different soil compositions in the vineyard, dividing it into four distinct blocks with strategically selected rootstocks and clonal varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The 96 point 2016 Prince of Hearts captures the essence of this top estate, presented with a supple mouthfeel and exceptional balance made possible by the site’s complex terroir and the wine team’s diligence in the vineyard and cellar.

The smallest plots of land can have the greatest potential to produce the most vivid interpretations of their terroirs. The home vineyard of legendary winemaker Jeff Ames is Savory Estate, which sits at 1780 feet on Howell Mountain. The tiny 1.3-acre vineyard produces potent fruit and wines with tremendous structure, depth, and age-ability. With a 98 point score on the 2016 vintage, I wouldn’t hesitate to secure yours.
 
Icons David Abreu and Rick Forman planted Savory Estate, and they chose Clone 7 Cabernet Sauvignon, used in numerous cult wines. The soils are a mixture of clay and gravely loam, and when matched with the extreme elevation, produce intensely concentrated fruit. 
 
Jeff Ames mentored under Thomas River Brown at Schrader, Maybach, Outpost, and TOR before becoming head winemaker at TOR in 2005. His wines are some of the deepest, most hedonistic, and balanced that I’ve found anywhere near this price level, and with these incredibly high scores, this one could disappear fast.

“The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Savory Estate comes all from a great, higher elevation vineyard on Howell Mountain and checks in as 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc. It spent 27 months in French oak prior to bottling, and there are a scant 125 cases made. This sensational effort boasts a dense, inky color as well as a kaleidoscope-like array of blueberries, blackcurrant liqueur, bay leaf, iron, and an almost bloody, meaty character that’s hard to describe. The palate doesn’t lose a beat and is full-bodied, deep, concentrated, and structured, yet also ethereal and elegant. This is mountain Cabernet at its finest!
