Upper Bench Block Three
Moon Mountain District 2022

2022 Ty Caton Proprietary Red Moon Mountain District

From a vineyard carved into the volcanic ridges of Moon Mountain, the Upper Bench Block Three Red emerges with striking poise and presence. This is Ty Caton’s crown jewel, sourced from the vineyard’s highest, most expressive block, where red clay and fractured basalt yield fruit of uncommon depth. The resulting wine is dense yet lifted, shaped as much by the rugged mountain elements as by Ty’s intuitive hand in the cellar.

The wine unfurls as a masterful Bordeaux-style blend: roughly two-thirds Merlot for its plush texture and expressive fruit, rounded out by one-third Cabernet Sauvignon that brings tension, depth, and structure. Together, they create a wine that’s supple yet focused, dark-fruited and lifted, with just enough muscle to command attention and enough polish to leave a lasting impression.

Crafted with restraint and a clear vision, the 2022 vintage embodies both place and philosophy. Its supple power, lifted aromatics, and finely etched tannins are born of thoughtful farming and minimalist winemaking. For lovers of site-driven blends, this wine delivers rare authenticity at a price that makes it even more compelling.

“The 2022 Red Wine Caton Vineyard Upper Bench Block Three Red Wine includes 10% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend and is a deeper shade of ruby red. It’s very pretty on the nose, with cassis shining through as well as some red-fruited highlights and notes of pine, pressed flowers, and forest earth. It’s generous on the palate and has a kiss of sweet fruit, with pliant, ripe tannins and a creamy texture. It’s a charming wine to drink over the coming 7-8 years.”

2021 Kamen Cabernet Sauvignon Moon Mountain District Sonoma County

Kamen’s 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a cinematic masterpiece—an epic of power and precision, written by the land and directed by a man who knows storytelling like few others. When screenwriter Robert Kamen first encountered the wild slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains in 1980, he saw a story waiting to unfold. With volcanic soils and wind-swept ridgelines, it was a rugged, high-altitude stage destined for greatness. Partnering with legendary viticulturist Phil Coturri, Kamen began shaping the vineyard like a screenplay—layer by layer—where the struggle of the vines yields fruit of striking intensity.

Since its debut in 1999, Kamen’s Estate Cabernet has become a defining voice in the Moon Mountain AVA—a district that whispers of the wild and rewards the bold. With each passing vintage, the wine has grown more nuanced, more layered—like the best kind of protagonist: complex, charismatic, unforgettable.

In 2021, winemaker Mark Herold crafts a pure Cabernet Sauvignon as expressive as a finely tuned monologue. It moves with structure and grace, revealing scene after scene of black fruit, crushed rock, violets, and spice—each sip a nod to the mountain’s raw beauty and Kamen’s relentless pursuit of excellence.

“A richly fruited red, with lush flavors of plum and blackberry compote, this cruises steadily, offering flashes of warm earth, sweet bay, tobacco and licorice root. The fruit is polished, and the other elements show a little growl, creating a nice contrast throughout. Best from 2025 through 2036.”

Winemaker Ty Caton’s relentless drive to produce “wines of distinction with an authentic sense of place” began after he returned to his hometown of Sonoma and convinced his parents to develop their land in the Moon Mountain District. The region located North of Sonoma on the western slopes of the Mayacamas mountain range is now well known for producing intense, flavorful fruit with a volcanic minerality from the intricate complexity of the mountain soils not far from the Pacific Coast.

The estate’s three acres of Merlot thrive in the Upper Bench Vineyard with an east-to-west orientation on iron-clay soils that are particularly suited to this variety. The 2019 growing season was nearly perfect in Sonoma with long hang-times, even fruit development, and concentrated flavors that are deeply defined coming from Ty’s mastery in the vineyard and the winery.

On the palate, the wine has a silky, smooth texture and flavors of blackberries, chocolate-covered cherries, mocha, and a fresh minerality. Give this a few years in the cellar for further development, or enjoy it now with its supple drinkability.”

2017 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages Sonoma County Red
Chateau St. Jean was founded in the Sonoma Valley in 1973 and quickly established a reputation for single vineyard-designated wines that captured the individual character of each site. Cinq Cépages is the winery’s flagship wine that winemaker Margo Van Staaveren creates from specially selected fruit from outstanding vineyard locations throughout Sonoma. The wine has an incredible history of exceptional accomplishments, including ranking as the #1 wine on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list in 1999, followed by the #2 spot in 2002.

This Cabernet Sauvignon dominant Bordeaux-style blend has fruit sourced from Knights Valley, Moon Mountain, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and the Sonoma Valley estate. The yields for the 2017 vintage were lower than average, leading to wines of fine quality with depth, dimension, and silky smooth tannins.

Dedicated to crafting wines with an authentic sense of place, Ty Caton formed his Cabernet Collection to highlight the very best blocks within his Estate Vineyard on Moon Mountain. His 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Upper Bench offers a vivid portrayal of the distinct terroir of the highest point in his vineyard. The wine powerfully expresses its origin with profound depth, balanced red and black fruits, dusty tannins, and slightly mouth quenching acidity that ties everything in. The winery lists it for $60, which is a real value, but at our price, I’d order what you can of this 112 case production Cab, and you’ll thank me later.

Caton Vineyard is on the Sonoma side of Mount Veeder. The well-drained red volcanic soils there are also home to icons like the Monte Rosso, made famous by Louis Martini, and Frederick’s Vineyard used by Turley.

The Upper Bench block consists of less than 11 acres of vines, allowing Ty to farm each vine on a micro-level. Ty’s commitment to the stewardship of his land, and unwavering determination to make balanced wines with distinct varietal character and terroir intensity, is obvious in this wine.
