Sebright wowed us earlier this year with their Greenwood Block Cabernet. Their resolute style of crafting beautifully refined wines deep-seated in elegance made a memorable impact on everybody lucky enough to try it. We wondered if it could get any better, and their 48 case production of Reserve Cabernet from their Estate Vineyard loudly answered that question with a resilient YES. The wine is more profound, more opulent, and with more intensity than their Greenwood Block bottling. Like the Greenwood block, Andy Jones, who worked under Thomas Rivers Brown at Outpost and several other well-known projects, made it. At $125, it’s an incredible wine, but at our customer appreciation week price of $65, it’s unbeatable.
 
Sebright’s Reserve Cabernet comes from their single-acre Garnett Creek Estate Vineyard, double planted to clone 7, a clone also used by Screaming Eagle. They farm the vineyard sustainably and by hand, and the volcanic ash soils produce tiny yields of intense fruit. 
 
Andy’s wine team created this reserve release from a vintage recognized for its unrivaled quality, and one that Robert Parker stated “…may turn out to be the finest vintage I have experienced in tasting North Coast varietals over the last 37 years.” It spent 23 months in new French oak barrels, and with just 2 barrels (48 cases) produced, only a few will be lucky enough to own it.

Ty Caton created his Cabernet Collection to highlight the very best blocks within his Estate Vineyard on Moon Mountain. Ty’s Estate Knoll Cabernet is from a tiny half-acre block, which took over 80 jackhammer bits to plant the 559 vines. The resulting wine has penetrating dark fruits, remarkable depth, and character, and at 40% below retail, I recommend you grab some while you can.
 
Ty’s Vineyard is on the Sonoma side of Mount Veeder, where the well-drained red volcanic soils are also home to icons like the Monte Rosso, which was made famous by Louis Martini, and Frederick’s Vineyard used by Turley.

Winemaker Mark Jessup built the foundation of J Gregory winery upon a core of small family growers that allow him to select from a broad spectrum of fruit profiles. For his Chardonnay, Mark chose Tony and Jo Ann Truchard’s Vineyard in Carneros, which they’ve family farmed for the last 40 years. Truchard is a noble source revered for producing opulent, expressive fruit. Wineries like Far Niente and Nickel and Nickel have sourced grapes there for years. J Gregory’s Chardonnay is stunning at the winery’s $54 price, but at our price, there aren’t enough superlatives to describe it. 
 
Mark produces his Chardonnay in a balanced and highly-detailed style loaded with tropical fruits, organic honey, and stoney minerals. He ferments in a combination of French oak and stainless steel, which creates an exciting tension on the palate that’s divine.  
 
Mark Jessup is a veteran winemaker that was part of the original winemaking team at OPUS ONE from 1979 through 1987. After OPUS, he chose to pursue his dream of building a winery of his own. He produces just 200 cases of this remarkable Carneros Chardonnay, and I hope you try it.

Faust’s 96 point The Pact Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 was created from their most expressive blocks from the Estate Vineyard in Coombsville and was crafted to epitomize the purest expression of the Estate. Formerly a dairy farm, the property was developed by the Huneeus family, who also own Quintessa. They chose it for its diversity of soil, elevation, exposition, and climate that’s cooler than most areas of Napa Valley. This remarkable 2016 resulted from the culmination of their vision, work developing the land, and perfecting their winemaking.
 
Faust winemakers Jen Beloz and David Jelinek produced this masterpiece. Jen gained her experience while working under Joel Peterson at Ravenswood Winery before joining Huneeus and becoming winemaker at Prisoner in 2011.  
 
The 2016 release is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, born in Quintessa’s state-of-the-art winery in Rutherford. After 19 months in barrel and a couple of years of development in the bottle, the 2016 offering is a stunning beauty.

Each year STEPS is re-birthed as it’s formed from declassified grapes out of some of Napa Valley’s most coveted vineyards and meticulously blended by winemaker Grant Long, Jr, whom you might know from Aonair, Witchery, and James Joseph. Grant makes the blend with an unwavering goal of producing a showy, hedonistic red that’s guided by the vintage and the varietals that performed best. The 2018 release perfectly reflects the vintages knockout power and underlined elegance, and at $50, the value is nearly inconceivable.
 
Steps 2018 Barrel Select draws on the concentrated flavors of Howell Mountain fruit and brings into play the elegance of Coombsville and the minerality of Calistoga grapes. Each lot was fermented separately and barrel-aged for 23 months before the blend was assembled and guided into bottles. 
 
The final blend is nearly 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, elevated with Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Chardonnay is highly-expressive and transparent in both the terroir and fermentation method. Most Chardonnays are either barrel or stainless steel tank fermented, but there’s been a resurgence in Concrete Egg fermentation, and for a good reason. The convex shape of a Concrete Egg creates a vortex that persuades the natural lees to be suspended throughout the vessel, resulting in more body, flavors, textures, and softer acidity. Martin Ray’s Dutton Ranch Chardonnay is a brilliant example, and with a 95 point score and priced at just $25, I highly recommend it.
 
Dutton Ranch Vineyard is in the Green Valley sub-appellation of the greater Russian River Valley. The Goldridge sandy loam soils and near-proximity to the Pacific provide the ideal growing conditions for premium Chardonnay grapes. Luminaries Kistler, Patz & Hall, & DuMOL have all sourced grapes from it. 
 
With a 95 point score and priced at just $25/btl, Martin Ray’s Concrete Fermented Dutton Ranch Chardonnay offers detailed tropical fruits, perfect balance, and stony minerality. Winemaker Jed Steele has an impressive 50 years of winemaking experience, which began in the cellar at Stony Hill in 1968 after getting his enology degree at UC Davis. It’s taken him all over the Golden State, and he’s worked closely with grape-growers across California throughout that time. Jed settled on Sangiacomo’s Green Acres Vineyard to craft his first Pinot Noir under his namesake. Green Acres was also the Sangiacomo’s first vineyard, which they planted in 1969, and it’s their most sought-after with the greatest number of Sangiacomo-designated wines produced from it. Wines average around $50 from this site, so at $24, it’s a steal. 
 
One might describe Steele’s winemaking approach as minimalistic, and they use a light-handed method that better highlights the wines’ natural aromas and flavor characteristics. They transfer wine by gravity wherever possible and use native yeasts and natural fermentation during the process. 
 
They fashioned the 2016 Green Acres Pinot Noir from 30-year-old vines that produced berries with incredible flavor intensity. The wine spent 16 months in barrel, and now time in the bottle has further developed the remarkable depth and finely detailed flavors in this very special Pinot.
