SONOMA COAST

2015 Failla Sonoma County Chardonnay
After dominating one varietal for nearly two decades as winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars, the natural progression is to start a new challenge, create something fresh, then conquer that too… Ehren Jordan’s viticultural training in France greatly influenced his farming and winemaking choices, which are evident in this sensational Sonoma Coast Chardonnay.

Utilizing fruit from Keefer Ranch, Olivet and Flood Gate Vineyards, the 2015 washes over your palate with blissful intrigue as flavors linger on the palate with stunning length.  This Chardonnay romances your palate, cultivating feelings you didn’t think were possible in a white wine…

Some say that variety is the spice of life, and that statement certainly holds true in Fallia’s Sonoma Coast Chardonnay.  Aged in a mix of concrete egg, french oak and stainless steel, the 2015 is bright and brilliantly complex.  A Chardonnay this great won’t be “on the market” for long.  We think you’ll FAiLLa in love with it, just like we did…

Tasting Notes: “An explosive nose that exudes chocolate covered cherries, aged tobacco leaf, dried flowers and hints of sweet vanilla.  On approach, the lush, deep, black fruits wrap your palate in a balanced elegance that is rich and opulent, yet remains fresh and lively at the same time.  Then cocoa powder dusted blueberries emerge, along with cherry jolly rancher candy which weigh in perfectly against the slightly dusty tannins which trail off into a long, mouth quenching finish.  Drink now through 2020.”

2012 Anantaah Bella's Blend Proprietary Red
From a mountainous area where the bottle prices are generally as steep as the terrain, it’s extremely rare to come across a killer Bordeaux Style Blend at under $80/btl.  Anantaah’s 2012 Bella’s Blend lassoed my brain and refused to let go… Created in a rich, layered style, unfurling decadent blue and black fruits, chocolate covered plum and savory spices.  The winery produces less than 500 cases a year, between all of their wines and there’s simply never enough of this wine to match demand. Words can hardly express how great this 2012 is drinking…

Originating from the Madrone Vineyard located at 1,900 feet in elevation, this deep, velvety Red possesses a multitude of layers and remarkable balance.  Perpetually changing and evolving in the glass, layer after layer of impeccably well-balanced flavors coat your palate in an abundance of dark fruits and sweet, velvety tannins.  Aged for nearly two full years in barrels and now with around 3 1/2 years of development in the bottle, this wine is gorgeous right now and has the structure to go another decade.

Winery Notes: “… Deep dark purple in color, with the initial aromatics of blackberries. There are a handful of California winemakers whom many would refer to as legendary or iconic, and whose triumphs and experience are so profound that their very name rings with excellence.  Philip Titus is etched permanently onto that list…  Revered for his work authoring Chappellet’s Pritchard Hill wines for nearly three decades, leaving countless World Class wines in his wake.  When our panel first tasted his 2013 Malbec, it was one of those wines that compels you to say “WOW that’s good…” So, we bought every bottle that we could…this wine defines value.
Forged from the Titus family vineyard located just North of Saint Helena, this stunning Malbec is kept for nearly two full years in barrel before bottling.  And from a vintage unanimously recognized for its unrivaled quality… One that Robert Parker alerted readers that it “...may turn out to be the finest vintage I have experienced in tasting North Coast varietals over the last 37 years,”  this exemplary Malbec leaves everything in the glass.  Deep, penetrating, intense and with plenty of substance, this 2013 is really drinking beautifully now and promises another several years of improvement.

2014 Hollywood & Vine 2480 Napa Valley Chardonnay
If you asked an expert how to make it in Hollywood, they would likely tell you that you have to stand out above the crowd and have some compelling qualities about you that are unique to you.  The same holds true for wine, and Hollywood & Vine’s 2480 Chardonnay is unique.  For starters it’s sourced from a high-elevation vineyard in Napa Valley’s coveted Atlas Peak AVA.  Even more unique is the wine is crafted entirely from the Harold Weimer Chardonnay clone, which is known for producing exotic and wildly individualistic flavors.  This Chardonnay delights your taste buds with detailed reflections of underripe pineapple, jasmine, orange zest and delicate tropical notes.
And like a great actor, a great wine also need a talented coach to highlight the best qualities and pull all of the right pieces together… This Chardonnay was authored by Celia Welch, (Scarecrow, D.R. Stephens, Barbour, Dalla Valle…)  And just in case you may not be familiar with Celia’s artistry, just know that she made 5 cases of 2012 Scarecrow that sold for a record $260,000 at the Premiere Napa Valley Wine Auction… If you’re looking for a Chardonnay that stands out above the rest, this one’s for you…

Winery Notes: “The cool-climate origins of this crisp, fruit-driven Chardonnay are evidenced in the aromas that add notes of wet granite and a touch of sweet lemongrass to the jasmine, green apple and bright orange zest notes. This ripe, aromatic Chardonnay was fermented in a combination of new and once-used French oak barrels plus a few barrels of steel, and kept sur-lie with biweekly battonage, so the floral notes are supported by a few deep base notes of toasty vanilla and fresh lees. On the palate, the wine shows integrated, complex flavors of green apple, apricot, a touch of mineral character and a bright, crisp finish which highlights the citrus notes.”

2015 Crossbarn Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir
The short-list of the world’s top consulting winemakers is small, and many would argue that Paul Hobbs should be at the top.  To me, the most clear-cut reason for him being there is simply that people love his wines…  Forbes calls Paul the Steve Jobs of wine, referencing his ardent exactitude of winemaking and he’s clearly one of the most innovative and gifted winemakers.  The Forbes article also notes, that Hobbs was twice named Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker.  While we offer many wines that Paul Hobbs touches, we don’t often have the opportunity to feature one of his own… This wine, with three 90-92 point reviews, is an excellent introduction to the wines of Paul Hobbs.
Created in a deep, plush and penetrating style, and sourced from a selection of Sonoma Coast Vineyards, the 2015 Crossbarn Pinot is really easy to love.  This is a wonderful introduction to Paul Hobbs wines and at $36/btl and ground shipping included on 15, don’t miss it.

“Deep ruby-purple colored, the 2015 Pinot Noir is intensely scented of crushed black and red cherries with hints of game, mossy tree bark and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with vibrant cherry and red berry flavors, framed by velvety tannins, finishing with great purity.”  90 Points
“The 2015 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is plump, juicy and forward, with tons of black cherry, plum, licorice, lavender and spice notes. Succulent and racy, the 2015 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next few years, while the fruit remains juicy.”  90 Points
“… Aromas of crushed violet, Chinese tea, ripe raspberry, currant and musk are seamlessly echoed on a silky yet structured palate resplendent with wild berry, fresh cherry, blood orange and a hint of spice. A long, energetic finish turns somewhat nostalgic with the reminiscence of warm, tart, cherry pie.”  92 Points

CABERNET SAUVIGNON STOP TALKING…
2014 NAPA VALLEY

How often do you go into someone’s wine cellar and see a high quality wine that you’ve never heard of before?  It’s rare to find a wine that’s produced on such a small scale that it’s essentially nowhere to be found… Cru 9’s 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet is one of those wines. With a complete production of just 4 barrels, (100 cases,) this wine is just about as rare as they come.  The wine is remarkably stunning, and so good that we’re glad it’s still a secret… Rightfully named “stop talking”, I’m certain when the word gets out about how good this wine is, it will disappear fast.  At the winery retail of $50/btl I’m all in…and we bought every bottle that we could.
Carved from a secret vineyard source in Napa Valley, and due to a a non-disclosure agreement, the fruit source needs to be kept secret… The 2014 Cru 9 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and it shows. On the palate, waves of concentrated blackberry, cassis, espresso and plum preserves circulate and add new dimensions as the wine opens up.  It’s made in a deep but supple style that I find highly appealing.

2014 Montagu Bacigalupi Pinot Noir
Nothing beats drinking a stunningly beautiful Pinot Noir from one of California’s most Iconic Vineyards. Montagu’s 8 barrel production of their Baciaglupi Vineyard Pinot erupts from the glass with an exotic perfume of crushed blackberries, dried violets, Asian plum and baking spices.  This world-class vineyard made history at the 1976 Paris tasting when Château Montelena triumphed over all of the French wines in its category.  40 percent of the fruit was sourced from Bacigalupi.
Created in a deep and saturating style, the 2014 is beautifully textured, and loaded with class.  Utilizing three revered Pinot clones, 777, 667 and Pommard, and each complimenting the strengths of the others… the wine is then finished in high quality French oak barrels.  If you love big, California style Pinots like Marcassin, Belle Glos and Kosta Browne, one taste will bring you home.

SILVER GHOST CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2015 NAPA VALLEY
In the wine business, the saying that nice guys finish last doesn’t hold an ounce of truth.  Anybody that’s met Weston Eidson, founder and winemaker at Silver Ghost will likely tell you that he’s absolutely one of the nicest guys in the wine industry, and I concur.  Silver Ghost always finishes first, and it’s also the first bottle finished when opened next to comparably priced wines.  When you’re as nice as Weston you can access to some seriously high quality fruit at a price low enough to produce a killer Napa Valley Cabernet at under forty per bottle. The 2015 comes from vineyards in Rutherford, Saint Helena and Yountville, where the diversity in each iconic site adds it’s own unique character and complexity to the final blend, which is stunningly good.
The 2015 is becoming known for its superior quality, and this Silver Ghost is brimming with crushed black fruits, chocolate covered blueberries, dried violets and espresso roast.  It’s kept for 22 months in French oak barrels, and if  you’ve tasted Weston’s earlier vintages of Silver Ghost, then you already know… If you haven’t, I strongly recommend grabbing some before it vaporizes.

What can you get from just a single word? Single word descriptors can mean quite a bit, particularly when describing wine. Bob Pepi’s 2014 Eponymous Cabernet Sauvignon offers a virtual wine dictionary of descriptors, with layers of flavors that lure you into craving more and more. With an eccentric perfume laced with black tea, eucalyptus, roasted coffee beans, sage and cocoa powder dusted blackberries, the 2014 is rich and scrumptious, and unsurprisingly, this wine has a following of it’s own.  At the normal $60/btl retail price, this wine would have you and you beaming with joy.

Calling on fruit from Mount Veeder and the Benchlands below Atlas Peak, this perfectly orchestrated composition of two distinctly different sites oozes complexity and defined flavors.  Aged in French oak barrels for 20 months, the 2014 opens up to an abundance of dark berries laced with holiday spices, dried mint, pipe tobacco and clove.  If you like things a little bit different and enjoy deep, complex and individualistic reds that have plenty of character… this one is for you.

Winery Notes: “Eponymous 2014 exudes lovely, complex notes as soon as the cork is pulled. Held to the light, this elegant wine shimmers with a stunning deep purple-inky color that announces the intensity of the grapes. The complexity of aromas jump out of the glass with rich blackberries, spice, vanilla and hints of toasted rosemary that carry over to the palate. This palate has classic Napa structure and grip with more than ample tannins, although nicely balanced by fruit, a rich earthiness and spice. It is rich, full and round from the initial taste, continuing as it fills the mouth, leading to a long, lingering, polished finish. ”
