Zinfandels’ most distinct characteristics shine at high elevations. The altitude contributes to the vine’s ability to produce more concentrated fruit with amplified structure, savory intensity, and richness. Peter Franus, whom Robert Parker wrote has “the Midas touch when it comes to Zinfandel,” has sourced his Zin from the Brandlin Vineyard at 1200 feet elevation on Mount Veeder since the early ’90s. The 2016 release is a stunning example of Mountain grown Zinfandel, and at our price, the value is abundant.
 
Brandlin was planted in the 1920s and is one of the oldest vineyards on Mountain Veeder. The family planted the hillside vineyard to a field blend with multiple varietals, and the head-trained vines rely on winter rains as their sole source of irrigation. This dry-farming practice creates a deep root system that perfectly articulates the terroir of the Mountain. 
 
Peter ferments his Zinfandel at a cooler temperature to accentuate the zesty and forward fruit. He also ages exclusively in Burgundian French oak barrels, which adds complexity and increases refinement.

Vin Perdu is blended to emphasize each premium vineyard component’s unique characteristics, maximize the potential of the vintage, and then articulate it with elegance. In 2017 the wine arose from La Sirena, Amuse Bouche, and Fantesca vineyards and was crafted by Heidi Barrett. Heidi is a world-class winemaker whose past and present clients include Amuse Bouche, Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Grace Family, and many others. At under $100, this is, as Vinous writes, “an absolutely joyous wine.”
 
For the 2017 Blend, Heidi selected 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc from some of Napa Valley’s most premier sites. The wine highlights the vintage’s elegance, with stunning balance, enthralling complexity, and plush textures. 
 
Vin Perdu is the delicious result of a powerful partnership between Heidi Barrett and John Schwartz. In 2002 they created Amuse Bouche, a Pomerol-inspired Merlot that’s arguably the best in the Valley. Villa Trasqua has a 1000 year history in Castellina, Chianti, rooted in viticulture and innovation. The winery is on an ancient plateau in the town Castellina, and they cultivate their vineyards organically, perfectly expressing the site’s specific terroir. Sauternais is a region inside the Graves section of Bordeaux that’s best known for producing Sauternes, sweet dessert wines made from botrytis affected Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle varieties. It’s arguably the most famous region in the world for white dessert wines, and they’ve been made there since the 17th century. The most celebrated of them all is Château d’Yquem, which can top $500 per bottle. Notably, some of Château Haut-Bergon’s parcels sit adjacent to d’Yquem, and at less than $40 for the 375ml bottle, this is an incredibly stunning Sauternes.
 
Château Haut-Bergeron is owned by one of the oldest families in Sauternes, with more than 200 years and nine generations of winemaking. Their Estate consists of 35 hectares of vines in Sauternes and 12 hectares in Graves.

The winery was just named “Australia’s Best Producer” at the 27th Mundus Vini Grand International Wine Completion, and their 2018 Punch Reserve Cabernet took “Best of Show” in the Australian Red category. At around $30, their 2014 Punch Reserve Cab is sensational and offers deep power and concentration, firm tannins, fresh acidity, and remarkable detail. 
 
The winery fashioned the Punch Reserve Cabernet from a vineyard planted in the late ’60s to the low-yielding Reynell Clone, which is known for producing powerful and robust Cabernet Sauvignon fruit.

Storybook Mountain Vineyards has always been a treasured producer for those “in the know” and has ranked on the Wine & Spirits magazine top 100 list on fifteen occasions; that list is ever-growing. It’s the winery’s elevation, eastern exposure, and red clay-loam soils that join forces and create a terroir capable of producing world-class Zinfandel. The results speak for themselves, and fans of elegantly styled Zins with penetrating fruit, unique Mountain complexity, and long expansive flavors should invest in this 94 point treasure.
 
Andre Tchelistcheff advised Dr. Jerry Seps that the hills above Calistoga, with their red clay-loam soils and eastern exposures, were the best place in California to plant Zinfandel vines. Today, the vineyard is divided into over 100 micro-blocks based on varietal, sun exposure, rootstock, and clone, all farmed organically and without irrigation.  
 
Jerry aged this Zinfandel in a combination of French and American oak barrels inside the 130 years old caves, dug into the volcanic rock. The yields are also severely regulated by two green harvests in May and June, where only the best clusters are kept on each vine, resulting in just 2 to 2.5 tons/acre of pristine Zinfandel fruit.
