Domaine Fillon & Fils’ roots trace back to the early 1900s, with the winery’s first tasting cellar and headquarters established in 1935 in the village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux. The winery ownership remains under the same family today, building on a legacy of wines proudly crafted on-site and sourced from 90 acres of vineyard holdings throughout Burgundy.

Saint-Bris is the only appellation in Burgundy that allows the production of Sauvignon Blanc, and the variety thrives due to the cooler microclimate and limestone-rich, calcareous soil. 

The 2022 release captivated our tasting panel with its vibrant acidity, expressive citrus notes, and distinctive minerality, leaving us all wanting to add this unique wine to our own personal cellars.

Our tasting panel was immediately enamored by this wine and wondered how we’d never heard of it before. The winery sits on a 120-acre property in Alexander Valley that dates back to the early 1900s when Giuseppe Mazzoni immigrated from Carrara, Italy, and became a grape farmer and winemaker after joining the Italian Swiss Colony. 

The vineyards are situated in a prime location with exceptional terroir, including a combination of soil types, microclimates, and elevation changes that contribute to the unique characteristics found in Zialena wines.

The Winery is committed to sustainable farming practices and employs environmentally friendly methods in the vineyards, focusing on handcrafted, small-lot production wines. The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc is the second vintage fermented in custom concrete eggs using the egg’s natural convection to stir the lees and create an elegant structure with a soft texture and ultimate concentrated flavor complexity.

Hal and Fiona Barnett founded Barnett Vineyards in 1983, producing varietally pure, polished, and powerful wines stemming from their commitment to sustainable practices with minimal intervention in the winemaking process. For over three decades, they’ve sourced their Chardonnay from the legendary Sangiacomo Vineyard in Carneros, earning access to some of the vineyards’ best blocks, including El Novillero, Vella, and Catarina.

The progress of barrel fermentation and later malolactic fermentation are routinely monitored by the winemaking team, sampling wine from each barrel to maintain the desired balance in the wine, resulting in a beautifully polished Chardonnay.

In 1885, John Benson established Far Niente, a historic winery in Napa Valley that thrived until 1919, when prohibition halted its operations. Six decades later, Gil Nickel acquired and meticulously restored the property, driven by a vision to craft an exemplary Napa Valley Chardonnay with sophistication, balance, and stature. The inaugural bottling of Far Niente estate Chardonnay was released in 1979 and has been a winery namesake for over 40 years.

The 2022 vintage is a superlative blend of Napa Valley vineyards in Coombsville, an area boasting a climate akin to Carneros but with less wind and well-drained gravelly loam and volcanic ash soils.

Sixteen by Twenty Winery is named after an artist’s most common canvas dimension because it provides ideal balance, aligning with their wines’ guiding philosophy. Self-taught viticulturist David Dunphy and his wife Karen purchased their first parcel in Napa Valley in 2004. Today, they own 15 acres of vineyard land scattered throughout the valley, ranging from Howell Mountain to Coombsville.
 
As artists, David and Karen apply the precision of a 16×20 canvas philosophy to each wine in their portfolio, focusing on small productions from selected vineyard sites that are tended to by hand by the vineyard team. Progetti Agricoli is an established Italian producer showcasing the best in Italian wine production, and their Villa Loren label focuses on wines of Veneto. Within Veneto lies Valpolicella DOCG, where Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone, and Molinara grapes are hand-harvested late in the season for Amarone della Valpolicella. Once harvested, the grapes are dried in well-aerated drying lofts for three to four months, desiccating the grapes and concentrating sugars, flavors, and aromas.
 
Fermentation for Amarone is a long, slow process due to high sugar levels in the juice and cooler temperatures in the winter, enhancing flavor components as the sugar slowly converts into alcohol. The 2019 Amarone della Valpolicella from Villa Loren was aged in medium-sized oak casks for 24 months before bottling and left to rest in the bottle for eight months before release. The resulting rich, layered, luscious wine is an absolute delight and offers exceptional value at under $40 for one of Italy’s most desired styles of wine.
