Lortum Riché Vineyards, a family-owned winery now in its second generation, is dedicated to crafting wines of exceptional concentration and authentic luxury. Their modern winemaking facility, combined with strong relationships with Napa Valley’s most respected growers, ensures unwavering quality.

The name “Lortum” combines “lor” and “tum,” forming a “ripe exclamation of surprise,” and combined with “Riché” signifies a “rich, ripe exclamation of surprise,” reflecting the essence of the quality of fruit found in each bottle.

Winemaker Kevin Morrisey, renowned for his work at Ehlers Estate, brings his expertise to Lortum Riché. He strives to create wines of energy, focus, and complexity, achieved through meticulous viticulture and gentle fruit handling.

The Lortum Riché ‘Row 48 – Cask 9’ is a masterfully blended non-vintage wine that captures the spirit of Napa Valley. It offers enticing aromas and a satiny, vibrant, medium/full body. The finish is warm, layered, and remarkably long, with beautifully balanced fruit.

“Boomslang is a multi-vintage blend of 2019, 2021, and 2022 fruit, and is crafted by Kevin Morrisey (formerly of Ehlers Estate). It’s an incredibly easy-drinking, smooth Cabernet with just enough fine-grained tannins to layer in a bit of grippy texture, but for the most part, it’s a pretty, red-fruited elegant Cabernet with good tension and energy. This makes me wish California wineries would do more non-vintage blends.”

Erikson & Caradin proprietors are keenly aware that soil, elevation, and climate play crucial roles in fine wine production; however, expertise and ambition can take wine to the next level. Erikson & Caradin began in 2013, selling their small production to friends, and continue to remain craft-focused, with only around fifty barrels produced across eight different designations.

Their specialty is producing terroir-driven wines, which aligns with winemaker Kevin Morrisey’s skillset after interning at Chateau Petrus in Bordeaux before Stags’ Leap Winery, Etude, and Ehlers Estate.

Based around a core of Cabernet Sauvignon, balanced with Merlot and Petite Sirah, the winery’s 2019 Archer & Thorn Proprietary Red, from Calistoga, Yountville, and Oakville, captures the essence of Napa Valley, delivered with penetrating fruit framed by firm tannins and remarkable balance.

At $90, this wine earned well-deserved scores, but at $30, I’ll let you decide…

The Vineyard sits above alluvial soils created by ancient river beds providing rich, powerful fruit with profoundly complex minerality.

2018 Erickson & Caradin Ivy & Thistle Cabernet Sauvignon Atlas Peak
True wine lovers and collectors in their own right, Erikson & Caradin set out to create Cabernet Sauvignons that top the highest standards. The two found their beginnings in 2013 when they sold the entirety of their small production to good friends and select restaurants. They continue to remain craft-focused today, with only 50 barrels produced across eight separate designations.

The 2018 Ivy & Thistle is the fourth vintage of one single row of Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the steepest part of the Atlas Peak Vineyard, providing intensely concentrated and expressive mountain fruit. The cool vintage allowed for a longer hang time, producing beautifully complex fruit that winemaker Kevin Morrisey fermented in concrete before aging in second-use barrels. These practices encourage the fruit’s natural expression of its terroir to be the main focus in this limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon.

“The 2018 Erikson & Caradin Ivy & Thistle Cabernet Sauvignon has pronounced aromas of lavender, purple lilacs, black currants, black plums, cardamom, and graphite. The flavors are rich and intense on the palate with black cherries, crushed blackberries, dark chocolate, and dried herbs. The wine is full-bodied with velvety tannins and a very smooth, persistent finish that is drinkable today or can be aged up to 10 years.”
