NV Sherwin Cellar Scraps #19 Napa Valley Red

Cellar Scraps #19 is one of those wines that catches your eye even before you open it. The packaging pulls you in, but what’s inside holds your attention. From one of Spring Mountain’s most respected producers, this is Sherwin giving the reins a gentle loosen. It is a multi-vintage blend drawn from serious Napa sites, offering a level of creativity and playfulness you rarely encounter at this quality.

The concept is straightforward, yet the execution is anything but simple. Sherwin selects fruit from top vineyard sources across Napa and builds the blend barrel by barrel. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone, while the supporting varieties are woven in with real precision, adding texture and dimension. The multi-vintage approach gives the team the freedom to fine-tune every detail, and it shows in the final wine.

It opens with immediate charm, but there is real depth beneath the surface. Dark fruit and spice lead the way, followed by a smooth, layered texture that unfolds across the palate. Structure keeps everything neatly in place, maintaining focus and composure through a finish that lingers longer than you expect. Polished, expressive, and genuinely complex, this is the kind of Napa blend that confidently overdelivers.

“The Cellar Scraps #19 Napa Valley Red Wine has an exciting array of complexity on the nose with juicy red and black cherries, boysenberries, hints of cedar and black tea leaves, balsamic glaze, and savory spices. On the palate, the wine has a smooth texture with a bit of a bite from tannic structure. The flavors match the aromas on the palate with a mélange of red and black fruits, spices, and a finish of hot cocoa. This wine is very well balanced and very easy to drink, with potential for aging as well.”

NV Derafica Grotta Del Gelo Etna Rosso DOC Sicily Italy

High on the southern slopes of Mount Etna, where molten rock meets chilled alpine air, Serafica’s Grotta del Gelo Etna Rosso captures the elegance born from hardship. The vines root deep into fractured basalt, their struggle translating into purity and precision. It’s a red that feels both elemental and precise, channeling the power of Sicily’s most extreme terroir into a wine of haunting elegance.

Grotta del Gelo distills Etna’s raw, shifting energy into harmony. Although bottled non-vintage, this wine hails from the 2021 vintage and is drawn from vines perched nearly 900 meters above sea level. Days drenched in Sicilian sun ripened the fruit to vivid concentration, while cool nights sculpted vibrant mountain purity and freshness.

This wine’s core of Nerello Mascalese brings precision and lift, while Nerello Cappuccio adds depth and spice, their partnership weaving a tapestry of red currant, tobacco leaf, and crushed herbs. Its tannins are polished but resolute, as though shaped by wind and stone. It’s a wine that feels composed, orchestrated by nature and refined by hand.

“The Serafica Grotta del Gelo Etna Rosso is composed predominantly of fruit from the 2021 vintage, and paints a picture of its volcanic origin with aromas of graphite and pencil lead, juicy red and black cherries, pomegranate, dried herbs, savory spices, and sunbaked clay. On the palate, the wine is bright with juicy, red fruits, truffles, cracked pepper, and a mineral-driven tension balanced by smooth, velvety tannins. The wine’s concentration and complexity unwind as the wine opens up and reveals more and more with a friendly approachability.”

NV Gimonnet Gonet L'Origine Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Champagne

High on the chalky slopes of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Champagne’s most revered village, Gimonnet-Gonet’s L’Origine Blanc de Blancs delivers a portrait of purity and precision that belies its price. This wine reflects its legendary terroir with crystalline clarity. From its electric minerality to its tensile backbone of acidity, L’Origine channels the distinctive tension and elegance for which Le Mesnil is famed.

Crafted exclusively from Chardonnay and drawn from vines averaging 35 to 40 years in age, the wine gains quiet authority and layered depth. The cuvée is composed of a reserve of multiple vintages, assembled to maintain house character and amplify nuance.

Fermented in stainless steel and kept deliberately free from malolactic conversion, L’Origine preserves a lifted, stony brightness. It then rests 22 to 36 months on the lees, gaining volume and creamy texture without sacrificing its driving core. Disgorged just six months before release, the wine retains its precision and vibrancy. This is Blanc de Blancs in its purest form: linear, luminous, and deeply evocative of place.

“The Champagne Gimonnet Gonet L’Origine Blanc de Blancs from Le Mesnil Sur Oger is nothing short of extraordinary. The nose begins with notes of chalky minerality, and the cold, crisp essence of winter’s first snowfall. Aromas unfold with elegant layers of lemon zest, apple, quince, pear, and raw almonds that transfer to the palate, with a burst of vivacious acidity, and a hint of a slightly glazed, flaky pastry lending a delicate richness and balance to match the wine’s innate brightness and finesse.”

“Boomslang is a multi-vintage blend of 2019, 2021, and 2022 fruit, and is crafted by Kevin Morrisey (formerly of Ehlers Estate). It’s an incredibly easy-drinking, smooth Cabernet with just enough fine-grained tannins to layer in a bit of grippy texture, but for the most part, it’s a pretty, red-fruited elegant Cabernet with good tension and energy. This makes me wish California wineries would do more non-vintage blends.”

CREMANT D’ALSACE BRUT
ALSACE, FRANCE

Helfrich Cremant D'Alsace Brut Alsace France
The Helfrich family has been in the wine and spirits business for three generations in Alsace, France, and is proud to craft traditional Alsatian wines from the region’s prized grape varieties. Alsace boasts 13 major soil types and is the second northernmost wine region after Champagne, experiencing a continental climate with cold, snowy winters and hot, sunny summers. The sunny weather promotes full physiological ripeness, while the cool nights preserve fresh acidity.

The Helfrichs strive to create wines with complexity, elegance, and balance that are lively and refreshing, and the Crémant is that and more. The wine is made by the traditional method, resting on the fine lees for three months before the second fermentation in the bottle and aging 24 months before disgorgement giving complexity, focus, and delightful drinkability. It’s my new favorite value sparkler.

NV Decoy Brut Rose California
Dan and Margaret Duckhorn, founders of Duckhorn Vineyards, established Decoy as a value-focused brand in 1985. Duckhorn has a reputation in Napa Valley for producing memorable wines of the utmost quality. Decoy comes from a mix of Duckhorn estate vineyards and other top growers, seeing the same meticulous treatments as their prized, family-named wines.

Acclaimed winemaker Dana Epperson is an expert with multiple grape varieties, using her intuition to create the Decoy Sparkling Rosé into a sensational delight. This wine spent a year en tirage before being disgorged, meaning it spent time with the lees in the bottle and developed more complex and sophisticated aromas and flavors that are readily enjoyable immediately upon release.

BRUT NV

NV Mader Cremant D'Alsace Brut
Crémant d’Alsace is crafted in a traditional method and is one of France’s most consumed sparkling AOC wines due to its Champagne-level quality at a much friendlier price. By law, the fruit must be hand-harvested, spend a minimum of nine months on the lees inside the bottle, and spend a year in the bottle before release.

The vineyards of Domaine Mader were converted to organic farming in 2007, helping preserve the unique expression of Alsatian terroir, consisting of thirteen unique soil types. Mader’s Crémant d’Asace Brut is a blend of 30% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Blanc, and 20% Pinot Gris from the 2018 vintage with 15% reserve wine from the Domaine’s most noteworthy vintages, contributing depth and complexity.

Goldeneye Brut Rose North Coast NV
Dan and Margaret Duckhorn founded Goldeneye Winery in 1996 to expand their winemaking repertoire into cool-climate, Burgundian varietals in Northern California. The Pacific marine influence brings mild temperatures, fog, and wind to the vineyards, providing an ideal environment for growing classic sparkling wine grapes Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay.

The fruit for this wine was sourced from some of the finest and coldest vineyard sites in the North Coast AVA, maintaining high levels of refreshing acidity and brightness. The North Coast Brut Rosé was made in the traditional Champagne method with 26 months en tirage creating a beautiful balance of vibrant fruit and yeasty brioche notes that are almost too easy to enjoy. This lovely wine is my new favorite domestic sparkler.

GRAND CRU CHAMPAGNE
BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT NV

NV Bouquin-Dupont Grand Cru Champagne Blanc De Blancs Brut
The Echelle des Crus was established in 1911, ranking Champagne’s wine-producing villages and the vineyards surrounding them on a scale from 80-100%, and out of the 319 villages in the region, just 17 were awarded a 100% rating and given the prestigious Grand Cru status. Bouquin-DuPont’s Grand Cru Champagne is a prime example of classification’s majestic and regal quality.
This wine originates from Bouquin DuPont & Fils’ Grand Cru vineyard in Avize in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, an area home to vineyards owned by famous Champagne houses such as Moët & Chandon, Roederer, and Taittinger. This ‘Blanc de Blancs’ is a 100% Chardonnay blend from the house’s base wines aged four to ten years on the lees, creating a wonderfully developed, complex wine with a superb balance of focused, linear flavors and aromas.
