Revana Vineyards was established under the philosophy that world-class wine begins in the vineyard. They hired Jim Barbour, one of Napa Valley’s top viticulturists to manage their vineyards. In Jim’s 30+ year career he’s planted some of the greatest vineyards in Napa Valley, including; Hundred Acre, Grace Family, Amuse Bouche, Pride, and the list goes on. They elevated their wines to an even higher level when they brought in Thomas Brown as consulting winemaker. Brown is at the top of his game and is one of the dominating forces in Cabernet. Their 2017 Terroir Series Cabernet powerfully reflects the winery’s standards of excellence. 
 
Winemaker Geoff Davies, and consultant Thomas Brown created the 2017 Terroir series from three powerfully distinctive vineyards in St Helena, Oak Knoll and Atlas Peak. Each renowned site plays a magnificent role in the wines complexity and overall balance. 
 
At the winery, the fruit is meticulously sorted by hand and whole cluster fermented in small lots. Dr. Revana believes that Brown’s artfully restrained approach to winemaking allows for a pure expression of Cabernet, and his attention to every detail results in wines of purity, depth, character and elegance.

Some of my favorite winemakers have a signature style that’s detectable across multiple brands that they make.  For my palate, Thomas Brown’s Cabernets often combine a velvety mouthfeel with well-integrated oak and soft tannins that make them immediately enjoyable upon release and a gem behold.  Revana’s 2016 Terroir Selection Cabernet is a perfect example and even though it’s a massive Cabernet, the flavors unwind in supple layers and uncover remarkable complexity that’s complimented by perfectly integrated toasty oak.  Brown is absolutely at the top of his game and is one of the dominating forces in Cabernet Sauvignon…  He made history as the first American winemaker to receive a perfect 100 Point score from the Wine Spectator, and he’s also the winemaker at Revana, Maybach, Gemstone and Outpost to name a few.
 
Arising from carefully selected vineyard sites in St Helena, Oak Knoll and Calistoga, the 2016 is packed with concentrated blackberry, supple cherries, graphite and a touch of sweet vanilla. It’s not easy making a killer 94 Point Pinot that’s not only a great value, but one that is also complex, balanced and jam-packed with character.  Alexana’s Terroir Series Pinot was created from a diverse clonal selection, and encompasses fruit from five of Willamette Valley’s top AVA’s which lend volume to the wines complexity.  At the winery, the fruit is triple-hand-sorted allowing only the best berries through.  The wine was crafted by Bryan Weil who previously worked at Domaine Serene. On the palate the wine is exceedingly sensual and satiny-smooth, and at under forty per bottle, this Pinot has everything I look for in top-quality Oregon Pinot.  But with the recent 94 Point score, I wouldn’t wait to secure yours.
 
As the sister winery to Revana in St. Helena, Alexana is quickly building it’s own stellar reputation of excellence… In 2013 their Dundee Hills Pinot earned the #17 spot on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see their 2016 Terroir Series make the list this year too. It glides seamlessly across your palate leaving impressions of Morello cherries, pressed boysenberries, violets and dark chocolates. This absolutely brilliant interpretation of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is simply one of my favorite Pinots that I’ve tasted this year, in this wonderfully realistic price range.

Winery Notes: “The supple mouth feel and red-fruit core of the 2013 The Sisters makes it incredibly approachable early.  The color of this wine is a translucent deep garnet and aromas of rose oil, lavender, and mint emanate from the glass.  On the palate the wine is very round and fully reminiscent of a soft flower petal in feel and shape.  Notes of dark cherry, river stone, and jasmine are finely layered and framed by light tannin profile that provides just the right amount of structure.  This wine should be showing well for the next 5-7 years.”
