One of the few remaining wineries in Montalcino that’s owned and farmed by a Montalcino born family, La Rasina was founded nearly 1/2 century ago.  The Estate shows a palpable dedication to excellence which is obvious in a glass of this stunning 2013 Brunello.  Further refined in oak barrels for two years, the 2013 enters from another outstanding vintage in Montalcino and one the Wine Spectator describes as producing, “balanced Brunellos with vibrant structures.”  I highly recommend a case of this classic and high-scoring Brunello.

A winemaker’s life experiences are what shapes their individual winemaking styles and gives them the tools and techniques to make great wine.  8 years in the desert is the direct result of the culmination of winemaker Dave Phinney’s trials and tribulations which began back in 1998 with two tons of Zinfandel.  It actually didn’t work out the first time and he sold the wine on the bulk market.  He tried again in 1999 and made 29 cases of Orin Swift Zinfandel…  In 2000, the Zinfandel wasn’t great on it’s own, so he blended other varietals and produced the inaugural vintage of The Prisoner, which he continued to make for the next 8 vintages before selling The Prisoner brand.  The 2017 8 Years In The Desert wouldn’t be here without everything he’s learned a long the way, and lucky for us, it is here… 
 
Riveting, seductive and sensual were the first words to come to my mind when I tasted the 2017 blend.  The wine is primarily Zinfandel heightened with Petite Syrah and Syrah.  Dave Phinney is clearly a master at blending and creating new and unique wines that are wildly delicious and irresistible upon release.  I highly recommend trying a case…

The best wines only take your palate an instant to recognize that it’s something remarkable, and that’s exactly what we look for in our tastings each week.  In fact, we taste nearly a wine a minute at our group tastings because it happens that quickly when you come across something profound.  Sometimes you know just based on the aroma, but when it hits your palate it should light you up with excitement, which is exactly what happened when I tasted the new Hourglass HG III.  The wine was authored by legendary winemaker Toni Biagi… Tony spent nearly 10 years crafting the high-scoring Plumpjack wines, which rank among the best in Napa Valley, and their top Estate wines can go for around $200/btl…  At under fifty, the HG III is a low price of admission for wine of this outstanding pedigree.  
 
With an exhilarating velvety texture, and endless layers of sweet blueberries, cherry pipe tobacco, dried flowers and black chcolate, the HG III combines Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah into an exhilarating wine of pure brilliance.
