2015 Orrin-Sage Sonoma Mountain Chardonnay
There’s something mystical about a wine so under-the-radar that all of the information available is written on the bottle… But, etched in your mind are the flavors which write a story of its origins, and the care that went into creating it.  That’s the feeling that washed over me when I tasted Orrin-Sage’s 2015 Chardonnay, and it was met with a feeling of blissful disbelief when I found out we could offer this wine.  I was reminded a little bit of Walter Hansel and even Paul Hobbs when tasting it, and as I read further into it, the story became more detailed and full of lavish characters, with notes of ripe nectarines, Island pineapples, French Bistro creme brûlée and fresh baked lemon Meringue cookies.   You simply can’t put this one down…

The publicist did let slide that this is a limited edition of only 160 cases produced.  It gets really interesting when you learn that this story was originally destined to be penned by a different world renowned author, but somehow as luck would have it, this narrative made its way to Orrin Sage, and now, luck falls on anybody fortunate enough to take it all in.

Tasting Notes:This gorgeous Chardonnay is a marvelous bottling that was sired from an incredible vineyard source. The wine begins with aromatics of poached pear, ripe nectarines, heavy whipping cream and a touch of sweet vanilla. There are dense flavors of candied citrus, ripe pineapple, lemon meringue and crème brulee that toy with the subtle minerality. This is just an awesome value at this price “

2014 Foley Johnson Rutherford Estate Meritage
Victory is a thousand times sweeter when you’re the underdog… Just ask Bill Foley who’s Las Vegas Golden Knights just shocked the world by making it to the Stanley Cup finals in their inaugural season. And scoring yet another goal, Bill’s 2014 Rutherford Estate Meritage pulls a hat trick with its mouth puckeringly good, deep, velvety flavors and scores a power play goal with thundering authority.  With an entry price significantly lower than others in its division you could say that this Meritage is an underdog story of it’s own.  In this case the victory will be yours, when you score this wine for less than forty bucks.

Carved from Rutherford, an area long celebrated for its exceptional terroir and dusty tannins, as conveyed by Andre Tchelistcheff, legendary winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyards, “Cabernets need a touch of that Rutherford dust,” and this one grabbed my full attention. These players are made up of all five Bordeaux varietals and bursts onto the scene with pulverized dark berries, dried violets dusted with cocoa, pipe tobacco and subtle cedar.  At $45/btl this wine cross-checks every box… At $39.99/btl, you’ll want to clear some serious room in the wine cellar…

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate:Their 2014 Proprietary Red Meritage is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec and Cabernet Franc. It is another striking value among the stratospherically priced wines of Napa. More floral than its counterpart, with more uplifted aromatics, but similar weight and richness, this full-bodied, pure, ripe, delicious and complex wine has attractive aromatics, medium to full body and velvety tannins. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.”  92 Points

An absolute crowd-pleaser, and those of you who’ve enjoyed this blend each vintage might notice the 2016 exploits a greater percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon than their previous 6 vintages.  With Cabernet as the dominant grape, the 2016 is nicely concentrated, and on the palate, the wine’s hallmark velvety embrace comes dressed with provocative black cherries, blueberries, dried violets and cocoa.

We unanimously agreed that the Laird eclipsed it by a healthy margin.

Everybody loves rooting for the winning team and when your team is performing at the top of their game, contagious levels of jubilation fill the room.  Likewise, the bouquet on the Two Sisters Lindsay’s Vineyard Pinot filled our tasting room and induced similar feelings of excitement.  After all, this is another winner brought to us by Bill Foley who’s winning streak of wine and hockey has no limits. Charging from the glass like his Golden Knights on a break-away play, with crushed candied fruits, wild rose, spice box and white pepper that weave in and out in perfect formation.  Big, powerful and complex, like a dominant starting line-up, but with as much brawn as this Pinot displays, it has a feminine touch of detail, balance and finesse which makes it incredibly appealing.  This wine will have your friends and family cheering for another sip.

Emerging from the Lindsay’s Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills AVA, an area that’s revered for producing Pinot Noirs with exceptional aromatics, terrific acidity and remarkable focus, this Pinot made me want to grab my stick and get in the game.  With a 93 Point Score and a price that leave you pounding the glass, you’ll want to make a power-play on this one…

THE MASCOT

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2012 NAPA VALLEY

2012 The Mascot Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Ever wonder what happens to the grapes from the younger vines of some of the top wine estates in Napa? The wine from these vineyards would simply be way too good to sell off, so in this case, they made an incredible marriage of wines from their three amazing brands. The Mascot is a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon born from distinct hillside vineyards; specifically from the comparatively younger vines of BOND, Harlan Estate, and Promontory. It started out as a small project in the 2008 vintage, championed by Will Harlan and shared among the family, winemaking team, and close friends. Drawing fruit from blocks of more recently replanted vineyards between 7-15 years of age, The Mascot has such deep and expansive flavors and is so compelling, it’ll make you question how you got a wine of this quality, for this price.  Grab some now before this Mascot disappears…
Although the winery doesn’t specify exact grape varietal percentages in each vintage, The Mascot is always 90 – 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. This fantastic 2012 Cabernet perfectly reflects the breed and heritage of its incredible origins and will make you grin from ear to ear when you taste it.

Winery Notes: “The growing season of 2012 was defined by ideal conditions – warm, gentle, and even – and the resulting wine reflects this benevolence. The nose is wrapped around a core of red fruit and subtle spice. Upon entry, a spherical density expands into lush, vibrant warmth. Continuing easily across the palate, finely textured tannins resolve into a lengthy finish. The 2012 is generous and welcoming in its youth, and for the patient it promises deeper layers as the years pass.”

2013 Aldo Conterno Barolo Bussia
When considering a list of Barolo’s top producers, it would be impossible to exclude Aldo Conterno. Inspired by the modern style of Angelo Gaja, Aldo cut a path that includes both modern and old worlds.  Old world Barolos are know for tannins and heavy structure, which allows them to age forever, however they often need to be cellared for years before consuming.  The more modern Barolos are accessible after just a few years in the bottle and they open up to be brilliant and compelling wines that are easy to love.  The 2013 Barolo Bussia has already earned 96 Points from James Suckling and offers a gorgeous expression of Nebbiollo.  It’s a wine that will leave you thinking about it for days after trying it.
Bussia, one of the “cru” vineyard/districts located in the commune of Monforte d’Alba is one of the most desirable growing areas in Barolo and is famous for the dynamic terroir which expresses a penetrating structure and focused concentration of fruit.   Aldo’s Barolo Bussia comes from three distinct blocks in Bussia and offers old world complexity with new world accessibility.  At under $100/btl there are few Barolos in my mind that would compare.

ELIZABETH SPENCER

SAUVIGNON BLANC
2017 MENDOCINO

2017 Elizabeth Spencer Mendocino Sauvignon Blanc
The very first thing that came to my mind when tasting Elizabeth Spencer’s 2017 Sauvignon Blanc was this is a wine that everybody is going to love…  It was followed by pure, clean and refreshing white orchard fruits, ginger, rock minerals, lime and exotic passionfruit.  The wine was fermented in 100% stainless steel which helped preserve the natural acidity and bright, clean fruit.  At $19.99/btl this is simply one of the best expressions of California Sauvignon Blanc that I’ve found.
Created from two organically farmed vineyards, Gibson and Talmage Bench, the tension created from the two sites creates excitement on the palate.  The older vines lend complexity and mineral qualities which I find intensely interesting.  Inspired by Sauvignon Blancs from the Loire Valley in France, this is made in a fresh, pure style leaning towards white fruits and minerals.  It’s absolutely delicious to drink and as great as it is, it may not be available for long.

Tasting Notes:This is a medium to light-bodied Sauvignon Blanc, lovingly inspired by the Loire Valley. White peach and apricot, yellow grapefruit, and lemon blossom aromas erupt from the glass. These aromatics carry through and lend a dry fruitiness to the mineral driven pallet. The wine has very appealing ripeness and great balancing acidity, where the complexity of stone fruit and green apples, yield to a very citrusy, crisp finish.

2017 Pop 300 Oakville RoseFor wine lovers, being in-the-know can sometimes result in drinking a wine that performs so stratospherically above the realm of possibilities for it’s price point and type, that you feel like you stole something when you taste it. POP 300’s Oakville Rosé gives you that feeling and here’s why… Many would argue that the To-Kalon Vineyard in the heart of Oakville is the greatest vineyard in California.  A little known secret is that there’s a tiny block of Pinot Noir in the center of this magical vineyard.  It’s called the Wilsey Vineyard and in a case where location and being connected takes you the distance, POP 300 has my vote.  The aromas alone give you a rush of jubilation and compelling notes of bing cherry, crushed sea shells, minerals and wild raspberries let you know what you’re about to get into… Oh yeah and at $29.99/btl, it’s truly one of the best Rosé wines produced in California.

It’s well known that Oakville produces some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon fruit in the world, but very few people would know that Pinot Noir even exits in this iconic region.  This is a truly unique, Rose of Pinot Noir by Luke Russ, whose day job is the Commercial Director at O’Shaughnessey Winery, might leave you in shock and disbelief by just how good it is.  Just don’t let the shock last too long, because it will be gone before you know it…

2014 Calculated Risk Mount Veeder Proprietary Red
I’ve always found a mystical element in Mount Veeder fruit that always draws me in.  It’s the largest AVA within Napa Valley but the rugged terrain limits production to just 1.3% of Napa Valley grapes.  Yielding small, powerful berries, the sandstone and shale soils set this Mountain apart from all others in Napa.  It’s also the coolest Mountain which allows the grapes to have a longer hang-time so they can develop into something majestic.  One of the area’s hallmarks is the fine-grained tannins, along with brambly Mountain berries, stony minerality, and exceptional concentration.  The only thing keeping us from enjoying Mount Veeder wine every day is their scarcity and the often high-elevation price tag.  Of the ten 2014 Mount Veeder Cabernets that I found listed in the Wine Spectator, the average price was well over $100/btl. This Calculated Risk is sure to pay off…

A calculated blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon this remarkable representation of Mount Veeder hails from a vintage unanimously recognized for its unrivaled quality.  Exhibiting all of the characteristics of Mount Veeder fruit, from the stunning weight and concentration to the stony minerality, mystical bramble fruits and floral, this wine has it all.  The only risk will be waiting too long to secure your case…
