The Duckhorn name is synonymous with Merlot due to Dan Duckhorn’s passion for the classic Bordeaux varietal, which he initially planted in the Napa Valley in 1978. His love for Merlot started after a trip to Bordeaux, France, and he vowed to grow it just as beautifully in Napa Valley, improving its reputation in the New World.
 
Duckhorn’s Napa Valley Merlot is a blend of some of the winery’s most iconic vineyards, including the Napa side of Carneros fruit chosen for its proximity to the cooling effects of the Pacific Ocean, which play a vital role in contributing brightness to this wine. The 2019 vintage began with abundant rainfall, followed by a long, warm summer with foggy mornings and the absence of significant heat spikes helping to preserve freshness, vibrance, depth of color, and overall structure. This vintage ranks among their best yet for their beloved Napa Valley Merlot. Our tasting panel members were all commenting on how it was the best Duckhorn Napa Merlot in recent memory, and possibly ever.

Bordeaux’s original classification by Napoleon III in 1855 has remained nearly unchanged, representing just 61 chateaux and leaving many quality producers without deserved prestige and recognition. The Cru Bourgeois classification that Chateau Labadie attained was introduced to the Chamber of Commerce of Bordeaux and the regional Chamber of Agriculture in 1932, giving proper accolades to the quality coming from Chateaux left out of the original classification but fully deserving growers and vintners in their own right.
 
Bordeaux’s 2016 vintage was excellent, reminding critics of some of the region’s most famous vintages from the 1980s but with greater clarity and precision due to advances in the vineyards and wineries. Not only is this one of Bordeaux’s most note-worthy vintages in the last 40 years, but this wine comes from a producer whose primary concern isn’t about image but consistency of quality, which you’ll taste in this remarkable expression from the Medoc.

Mitch Cosentino is a seasoned winemaker with nearly a half-century of experience, placing him in the top tier of knowledge in California wine production; however, he hasn’t released a sparkling wine since the mid-1980s until now. In true “Mitch” fashion, he created this masterpiece using a single-stream fermentation in which, midway through fermentation, he transferred the partially fermented juice into a custom pressure-controlled tank, resulting in a wine with remarkable fruit intensity, balance, and freshness.
 
This closed system allowed him to rack and bottle the wine without loss of effervescence, eliminating the need for dosage used in the traditional method. The winery has been family-owned since 1996 and has been honored to have the highly talented Andy Erickson as their conductor since 2006.
 
Over the last 16 years, Andy has applied the intricate knowledge and expertise he gained while making wine at some of Napa Valley’s finest estates, including Screaming Eagle, Staglin, Mayacamas, and Harlan Estate. 2019 Sans Liege Co-Ferment The Offering

Sans Liege’s winemaker Curt Schalchin has an affinity for wines of the Southern Rhône because of their kaleidoscope of complex aromas and flavors. Relying on his intuition, he prudently monitors his vineyard’s unique microclimates from Paso Robles to Solvang, seeking finesse, distinct terroir, and unrestrained character. 

The winery describes The Offering as a quest for independence, giving an homage to the Southern Rhone but made with the freedoms of New World winemaking. The Offering Co-Ferment is a small side production with the same recipe as its sister wine with 30% whole cluster Grenache, destemmed Syrah with 25% of the stems returned, and 100% destemmed Mourvèdre. The critical difference is that all grapes were fermented together in the same vessel giving a heightened integration of the three varietals, resulting in a superior version of the same blend that everyone on our tasting panel wants to buy.
