Located next door to Vega Sicilia, one of Spain’s foremost producers, Arzuaga Winery sits in the heart of the Ribera del Duero DO. The geography is a warm, inland region along the Duero River, more recently gaining recognition for its bold Tempranillo-based wines. The family intimately connects with the land and maintains the vineyard’s biodiversity by farming sustainably and peacefully coexisting amongst flora and fauna. 
 
The care taken in the vineyard is the first and most crucial step before many others for quality wine production because it’s impossible to make outstanding wine without healthy, high-quality grapes. The 2018 Crianza is 95% Tempranillo with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and scored 97 points from the Decanter World Wine Awards, and for less than $40, this wine is an absolute treasure to behold.

In 1998, David Abreu and Rick Forman planted a tiny 1.3-acre plot at the top of Howell Mountain at an elevation of 1780 feet. Each vintage, the Savory Estate vineyard shows off its vast potential with powerfully concentrated fruit, rock-solid structure, and supreme ageability, that’s vividly depicted in Rudius’s 2018 vintage.
 
Jeff Ames began his winemaking career interning with Lynn Penner-Ash in Oregon and later worked as Thomas Rivers Brown’s assistant winemaker for Outpost, Schrader, and TOR before becoming the head winemaker for TOR in 2005. The Savory Estate vineyard provides Jeff with the pieces to the puzzle that make up his hedonistic signature style, with past vintages scoring well into the upper 90s. The vines are grown in soils rich in quartz crystals, which are sacred to many cultures for their physical, emotional, and mental healing powers. The balance found in the resulting wine is so clean and clear that you can skip the crystals because all that’s needed to realign your chakras is another glass of this unique and delicious blend of primarily Pinot Noir, enhanced with Tempranillo and Chardonnay. Our panel thoroughly enjoyed this wine down to the last drop, and we were surprised to find a wine of this quality at this value-level price.

Tasting Tinazzi’s 2018 Corvina last April, we were entranced by the outrageous quality, unfitting at its value price. However, when recently re-tasting each potential selection for our top five list this year, the fact that our panel preferred drinking this over $150 – $250 Napa Cabs on the table solidified our choice. 
 
Corvina is an Italian grape variety with an integral role, mandated by law in all Valpolicella wines, including Amarone, which must include a minimum of 45% in their blends. This late-ripening variety is low in tannin and high in acidy. Tinazzi’s version is varietally classic, manifested with bright cherry, transitioning to juicy dark cherry, spice, and classic hints of almond, a signature of the variety. Fans of juicy Rhone blends, Zinfandel, and of course Valpolicella wines (and well, anybody with a pulse) would love this, and especially at $25.
