2015 PROPRIETARY RED
OLD VINE, NAPA | SONOMA

You might recognize winemaker Helen Keplinger from when she was featured on the front page of the Wine Spectator, or from her work at Bryant Family, Kenzo, Grace Family, Carte Blanche or from her own label Keplinger, but most people probably haven’t heard of Waterfall… Of course, with 140 cases made of their Proprietary Blend, it’s no surprise.  At a small fraction of the price of the above mentioned wines, I couldn’t wait to taste this wine and it absolutely did not disappoint.  The wine combines equal quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and arose from old, dry farmed vines.  On the palate the wine is deeply concentrated, focused and finely detailed.  At $40, a wine of this caliber would make anyone do a double take… At $35, the quality is overflowing.

Cascading in from the remarkable 2015 vintage, which was the fourth straight drought influenced growing season and one that produced stunningly high quality fruit, but incredibly low yields.  The 2015 spent an impressive 21 months in oak barrels and now with a couple years in the bottle, it’s really starting to flow.

From Wine Enthusiast: “Hearty and full bodied, this wine is loaded with blackberry, dark chocolate and beef flavors and structured with moderate tannins and a rich mouthfeel. Winery Notes: “This lush and layered Bordeaux blend begins with alluring fruit-driven aromas of cherry, currant and plum, as well as sophisticated undercurrents of graphite, cedar, clove and nutmeg. The berry and spice notes are echoed on the round, mouth- coating palate, where they mingle with hints of black tea, vanilla and savory herbs. An underpinning of tannins provides weight, structure and impressive length to the finish.

OAKVILLE, NAPA VALLEY

2013 Cabaud Benedictions Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
What do you get when you combine the highest level of winemaking with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Andy Beckstoffer’s heritage vineyards in Oakville?  You get a wine that competes with the best in the world… Many of you know winemaker Luc Morlet from his work at Newton Cellars, Peter Michael, or from his own label Morlet which is raking in 100 point scores…  We brought you another wine from Cabaud earlier this year that many of you said was one of the best that you had ever tasted.  The 2013 Benedictions is the top wine produced at Cabaud and it’s made from the iconic Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard in Oakville.  The previous vintage caught the eye of Robert Parker who scored the 2012 94-96 Points and the new vintage is even better…

Finding new wines made by top winemakers, that are somewhat unheard of, pays off big at times… I would estimate Morlet’s Cabs to range from $165 to around $300/btl.  At $150 Cabaud is a killer deal…I cannot put into words how incredible this wine is.  Wines of this caliber and at this price never last long… I wouldn’t hesitate to secure yours.   Make sure to sign up for our email list to unlock special offers.

Tasting Notes: An intense, glass-staining purple color combines beautifully with flavors of blueberry pie filling, with muddled blackberries, red currant, bramble, white flowers and bakers chocolate. The supple, full-bodied opulence, sweet tannin, and rich, dense center core intermingle with the powerful fruit to seduce you with the first sip. The finish is long, powerful and supple with just enough fruit tannins to allow this one to age for a decade or so.  Kudos to Luke Morlet for crafting such a stunning wine.”  96 Points, Kevin M. How much would you expect to pay for a bottle of Oakville Cabernet from a vineyard bordering Opus One? I’m sure you know that Oakville is Napa Valley’s crown-jewel AVA and it’s widely considered the epicenter of Grand Cru quality Cabernet Sauvignon.  But this particular Oakville Cabernet comes from a secret vineyard that borders OPUS ONE on the North Side…  Sounds expensive right?  Fortunately for us, this one was created by Nick Goldschmidt whom many of you recognize from his Crazy Creek Cabernet which is arguably the best value in California Cabernet.  The 2016 Hilary Goldschmidt Charming Creek Cabernet is a classic representation of Oakville Cabernet with plenty of blackberry, plush tannins, depth and charisma.  The only thing missing is the high price… At $34.99/btl, you’ll definitely want a case.

Nick Goldschmidt’s 2016 Charming Creek is a wine with enormous upside potential.  It’s made obvious by the wine’s dense and extracted core, which unfurls a flurry of mountain berries, crushed rock, spice box and subtle tobacco.  With little coaxing in the glass the wine begins to impersonate some of Oakville’s giants, with remarkable detail, poise and extraction.  It’s easy to forget that you only paid $35/btl, when this wine starts showing off…  Just don’t wait too long, because values this great are always in high demand.

From The Tasting Panel:Named for Goldschmidt’s middle daughter, the wine’s grapes hail from Crazy Creek, a vineyard known to produce some iconic wines. WITCHERY RESERVE
2015 HOWELL MOUNTAIN
TWO BARREL PRODUCTION
Great things can come from a steadfast focus on your core strengths and attributes. Witchery epitomizes this and with their 2015 vintage they’ve scaled back production by nearly two thirds, producing only limited quantities of their three flagship wines, Howell Mountain, Oakville and Proprietary Red.  The two barrel production of their Howell Mountain Reserve casts spells of rich and enchanting flavors of mystic dark berries, crushed rock, violets and black cherry.  With the micro-production and macro quality, there will be a lot of people on the hunt for their most limited Howell Mountain Cuvée…
Held captive for nearly two years in new French oak barrels… this towering, prodigious effort emanates with majestic levels of boysenberry, roasted coffee beans, and cigar box.  This truly top-level Howell Mountain wine shouldn’t be missed and for those of you who’ve tasted any of Witchery’s wines over the years… no other information is needed other than here’s another brilliant wine from a producer that we adore. Vin Perdu 2015 Proprietary Red

VIN PERDU
PROPRIETARY RED
2015 NAPA VALLEY
Exceptional quality in the bottle is always paramount, but there’s something extra great about a wine that exceeds expectations in terms of quality and has great packaging to back it up.  Heidi Barrett is not only innovative in her winemaking, but she also has some of the most creative wine labels, and particularly with the 2015 Vin Perdu. The label changes as you view it from different angles making it stand out even more.  The wine is impressively deep and layered in lavish dark berries, sweet oak, minerals and milk chocolate.  It’s already earned 94 points from James Suckling and you might want to grab a case of it before this hologram disappears.
Arising from Amuse Bouche, Au Sommet, La Sirena and Fantesca vineyards, the 2015 is nearly 50% Cabernet Franc blended with Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.  As one of Napa Valley’s most talented winemakers, some of Heidi’s past and present clients includes Amuse Bouche, Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Grace Family, Revana, David Arthur and Barbour.  I strongly recommend  a case of this absolutely stunning Heidi Barrett made wine…

Hendry 2014 Zinfandel Block 20 Napa Valley

HENDRY
2014 ZINFANDEL
BLOCK 28, NAPA VALLEY

We taste many different Zinfandels during our weekly tastings, and most of them have origins right in our own backyard… Dry Creek Valley, Russian River or Napa, but we’ve had some from as far away as Croatia.  Few Zinfandels strike me the way that Hendry’s 2014 Block 28 Zinfandel did.  Remarkably penetrating and perfectly balanced, giving way to waves of briary cherry and raspberry fruit, intermixed with holiday spices, cracked black pepper and violets.  The previous vintage was named one of the Year’s Best Zins by Wine & Spirits, and the vintage before that was honored as one of the top 100 wines of the year by the same publication.  I think the 2014 is even better, so don’t wait too long to secure a case.

Nestled at the base of Mount Veeder, the Hendry’s have been farming the same vineyard in Napa Valley since the 1930’s… The lessons learned after more than 75 harvests are almost palpable in this extraordinary Zinfandel.  Kept for 15 months in oak barrels, the 2014 is wonderfully long and vibrant, without being the least bit overripe, heavy or jammy. This awesome Zin would be a remarkable compliment to food or delightfully pleasing on it’s own.

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “As for the 2014 Zinfandel Block 28, this is a briary, berry-scented and flavored Zinfandel that spent 15 months in French oak. There is a touch of new oak in the background, the wine shows minerality and earthy, spicy strawberry and black cherry fruit.” 90 Points

Fashioned from an organically farmed vineyard planted in 1920, the ancient vines have relied on winter rains as their sole source of irrigation for over 95 years.  Yielding just 1.5 tons per acre of strikingly intense, concentrated, pristinely focused fruit, the 2015 exhibits all the qualities that I look for in Old Vine Zinfandel.

2015 ZINFANDEL
PAPERA RANCH
Your Price: $47.99/btl
From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “A killer effort… from a vineyard planted in 1934…  Moreover, he clearly gives the fruit plenty of attention so that it can strut its ripeness and full-bodied character, given the fact that he rarely uses more than 20-25% new French oak, and of course, the wines are bottled with no clarification by fining or filtering. This should drink well for up to a decade or more.”

Le Pich 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon

LE PICH
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2015 NAPA VALLEY

It feels good to be on the leading edge of a fledgling brand that’s soared into something as special as Le Pich and Purlieu.  We first introduced their inaugural 2009 vintage back in 2012 and we never stopped singing their praises.  As the second label for Purlieu, a rising cult producer whose Cabernets range $95-$200/btl, Le Pich delivers a amazingly high level of quality, without the lofty price tag that often comes with it.  This phenomenal Napa Cab is made by Julien Fayard, who learned his craft at Chateau Lafite Rothschild.  Julien then gained valuable, first-hand experience as Director of Winemaking for Philippe Melka at elite Napa Valley producers like Lail, Gemstone, Hundred Acre, Vineyard 29, and Mastery…

Kicking things up a notch or two in terms of quality, the 2015 Le Pich is gorgeously concentrated, dramatic and wonderfully expressive.  Drawing from several celebrated regions throughout Napa Valley, each vineyard and unique micro-climate elevates the final complex blend.  The net result is that Le Pich is one of our best selling brands of all times, for good reason.  I strongly recommend a case… you can thank me later.

Mi Sueno 2013 Pinot Noir Los Carneros

MI SUENO
2013 PINOT NOIR
LOS CARNEROS

With an undeviating style that delights those lucky enough taste it, Mi Sueno’s Los Carneros Pinot is reliably long, round and deeply compelling.  After all, it was composed by Rolando Herrera, who gained valuable first-hand experience as Director of Winemaking for legendary winemaker Paul Hobbs.  He began his career in the 1980’s under the guidance of Warren Winiarski at Stag’s Leap Winery.  Now with more than 30 harvests under his belt, Rolando has applied all of the knowledge gained through the trials and tribulations during his impressive winemaking career and poured it into Mi Sueño, crafting a one of a kind, deeply captivating Carneros Pinot Noir.

Arising from the Tierra Blanca Vineyard located in the esteemed Carneros Appellation, this divine and wonderfully complete Pinot Noir spent 10 months in oak barrels before bottling.  Blossoming for over 3 years in the bottle, layers of fruit emerge in a tapestry woven with dried cherries, black tea, subtle sassafras and delicate floral notes.  If enjoying a high-level California Pinot Noir, without the premium price tag that normally comes with one sounds good to you, you’ll want to grab a case while supplies last.  If you choose to order on our website, you will need code sueno30 to unlock this dream discount.

Humanitas 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon

HUMANITAS
2012 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
REID VINEYARD, NAPA VALLEY

When we selected the Humanitas Signum as our number one wine in 2017, it sold out before noon… While this surprised some, it didn’t surprise me, because it’s difficult to come up with enough gushing superlatives that accurately describe how I feel about all the Humanitas wines.  While Signum was $100 Cab blend that we sold for $55, at under $40, the 2012 Reid Vineyard Cab is a wine that is a little easier to swallow… Pun intended.  Stunningly concentrated and dangerously hedonistic, the 2012 Reid Vineyard Cab is bursting with authoritative and alluring flavors of sensual dark fruits, chocolate espresso, scorched earth and pipe tobacco.

Expertly composed by winemaker Rob Lloyd, former winemaker at Rombauer, this 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon originates from a single vineyard on the North Eastern edge of St Helena.  A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, enhanced with Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Merlot, the 2012 spent 22 months in oak and like many 2012 Napa Valley Cabs, this wine is really showing great now and should continue to evolve for another 5-7 years.

Tasting Notes: “The aromatic bouquet blooms with red and black fruits, pipe tobacco, dark chocolate and hints of sun-baked earth. In the glass it is black as a starless night, ringed with rich, hedonistic blackberry, cassis, red berries and cocoa powder.  Though dense, this wine is nimble but with deep, dark black currant, mixed black berries, bing cherry and a touch of sweet vanilla that surrounds your palate in pure joy.  This is another sensational effort from a producer that is quickly becoming one of my favorites.”
