Grand Napa Winery in Rutherford produces Heir Apparent wines, and winemaker Dwight Bonewell’s expert blending skills and access to exceptional vineyards paired beautifully with another outstanding vintage. Dwight crafts his Reserve Cabernet from a rigorous selection of high-quality sites in Rutherford, St Helena, and Calistoga, resulting in a multi-faceted wine embodying Napa Valley’s distinctive personality.

The 2019 growing season saw few challenges and a mild autumn, giving the grapes a long hang-time resulting in exceptional flavor development while retaining acidity. This particular vintage is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc added to accent the mid-palate and maintain balance, just like many of the great wines of Bordeaux.

If vines could speak, AXR’s historic St. Helena estate’s vines would have stories as juicy as their fruit, chronicled for 134 years as the property transitioned from a brewery, restaurant, inn, saloon, and winery, including having one of the first female winemakers in California in 1886. Today the winery celebrates Napa’s progress and innovation, helping elevate the valley’s name to the high-quality standing wine lovers worldwide seek.

Winemaker Jean Hoefliger draws on his experiences working in the cellars at Chateau Carbonnieux and Chateau Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux, bringing a Grand Cru Classé prestige to his Napa Valley masterpieces. This Proprietary Red Blend is a classic Left Bank style with 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, but for a much friendlier price than a comparable quality French Bordeaux. Ehlers Estate in St. Helena is a historic winegrowing property initially established in the mid-1800s at Napa Valley’s narrowest point, where constant airflow brings morning fog and moderating sea breezes, ensuring a slow and even ripening. The estate’s old-world style layout, where the farthest point of the property is just 600 yards from the centrally located winery, is rare in California, naturally encouraging an increased focus on quality.

Ehlers’s vineyard, situated on 42 contiguous acres, is divided into five primary blocks defined by their unique soil types and 25 sub-blocks with varying combinations of clones and rootstocks, offering a remarkable diversity in their fruit. Designed to represent “the perfect picture” of the unique terroir of this classical estate, the 2016 Portrait is firm and confident, harmoniously displaying the vineyards and vintage’s most remarkable characteristics.
