2019 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley
Allen Shoup was a prominent visionary in the Washington wine industry and spent decades building the Chateau Ste Michelle brand and its affiliate wineries to international recognition. In 2002, Allen retired from Chateau Ste Michelle to launch Long Shadows, his most significant and ambitious project yet, aimed at elevating Washington wines by bringing in renowned international winemakers to create super-premium wines.

Allen hired ambitious French native Gilles Nicault to be the Director of Winemaking because of Gille’s knowledge, flexibility, and eagerness to merge his winemaking skills with each vintner. Each winemaker joined the team as a co-owner of their wine, and in doing so, Allen hoped each partner would learn more about Washington’s vineyards and embrace the viticultural excellence of the state. With over forty years of experience making wine in Napa Valley, Randy Dunn expertly crafted the 2019 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon from hand-harvested grapes aged 22 months in 85% new French oak bringing forth an extraordinarily high level of sophistication from the Columbia Valley.

“All Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Feather is a rich, powerful wine loaded with notions of cassis, graphite, scorched earth, and crushed stone. Full-bodied on the palate and concentrated, it has building tannins, a great mid-palate, and the balance and class to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and, I suspect, evolve for decades.”

MOUNT VEEDER 2018

2018 Anthem Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder
Julie and Justin Arbuckle founded Anthem to produce hedonistically rich, powerful wines from intensely concentrated mountain fruit. After interviewing over 100 applicants, they chose Jeff Ames as their winemaker because of his experience working for Thomas Rivers Brown as his assistant winemaker at Outpost and Schrader, as well as winemaker TOR and Rudius. One taste and you will know that Jeff was a brilliant choice, and at under $100, this is a candidate for the best Cab in Napa Valley.

Anthem’s estate on Mount Veeder remains relatively cool, even on the warmest summer afternoons, due to its elevation and sea breezes from the nearby San Pablo Bay. In the 2018 vintage, the weather was more temperate than usual and produced grapes with intense flavor, elegant structure, and finely integrated tannins. Jeff made the resulting harvest into this outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon that’s unbelievably delicious now, with a capacity to age in the cellar for more than 20 years.

“Structured, with grip and length, this wine is ripe and rich in style with tremendous tannins. Chalky in texture, it provides layers of cassis, vanilla and clove, with the mountain appellation’s signature earthiness and herbal underrates. This will do well to cellar; enjoy best from 2028–2038.”

The 2019 vintage is the second debut of the X∙I, a predominately Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend accompanied with small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec to provide elegance, balance, and nuanced character.

“Stacked with everything I look for in a high-quality Thomas Rivers Brown wine, the Matthew Wallace Section 15 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a gorgeous offering. It begins with a perfumed nose of brambly wild mountain blackberries, red currants, English rose petals, fresh green herbs, and baking spices. What follows is a concentrated palate with layers of plush ripe plums, dark chocolate, dried blueberries, and black tea, wrapped in velvety tannins and mouth-quenching acids that carry it to a long, satisfying finish.”

2019 Goldeneye Pinot Noir Gowan Creek Vineyard Anderson Valley
Dan Duckhorn recognized the potential for cultivating some of the world’s finest Pinot Noir in California’s Anderson Valley in the 1990s and founded Goldeneye Winery in 1996. He knew that the oceanic influence brings mild temperatures, fog, wind, and a considerable diurnal temperature variation providing an ideal environment for growing cool-climate varietals.

The Gowan Creek Vineyard offers a southwestern exposure with several blocks planted with clones of Pinot Noir expertly matched by each block’s particular soil type. The 2019 vintage is considered one of the top vintages in Goldeneye’s near three-decade history due to the length and quality of the growing season that produced Pinot Noir with pronounced aromatics, deep flavor complexity, and a silky texture.

“An impressive vintage bolsters this wine’s already stellar reputation. Following scents of nutmeg, cardamom, and watermelon rind, the earthy liquid spreads across the palate, anchored by animale, plum, heather, wet soil, and gingerbread. Cinnamon takes shape on the mid-palate with candied yam, iron, and rhubarb. Exotic and profound.”

“A dried-floral nose with notes of coffee, ripe strawberry and sage. Medium-to full-bodied with a cool profile of redcurrants and ripe raspberries. Silky tannins. A pleasant lavender note, too. Really well layered and complex with balance and precision. Drink or hold.”

SONOMA COUNTY RED

2017 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages Sonoma County Red
Chateau St. Jean was founded in the Sonoma Valley in 1973 and quickly established a reputation for single vineyard-designated wines that captured the individual character of each site. Cinq Cépages is the winery’s flagship wine that winemaker Margo Van Staaveren creates from specially selected fruit from outstanding vineyard locations throughout Sonoma. The wine has an incredible history of exceptional accomplishments, including ranking as the #1 wine on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list in 1999, followed by the #2 spot in 2002.

This Cabernet Sauvignon dominant Bordeaux-style blend has fruit sourced from Knights Valley, Moon Mountain, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and the Sonoma Valley estate. The yields for the 2017 vintage were lower than average, leading to wines of fine quality with depth, dimension, and silky smooth tannins.

SONOMA COUNTY 2017

2017 Immortal Estate Slope Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County
The magnificently steep vineyards of Immortal Estate are among the steepest in California, planted on a dramatic 55-degree slope on the Mayacamas range. The winery was formerly known as Hidden Ridge, and in 2019, Tusk Proprietor Tim Martin partnered up with Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander and Supermodel Kate Upton as the winery’s owners.

Winemaker Tim Milos made wine at Opus One, Stag’s Leap, and Cliff Lede and has two 100-Point wines under his belt, so it’s no wonder Immortal wines receive high scores from enthusiasts and critics with each new vintage. Individual barrels from eight lots were selected for the final blend of the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon producing complexly flavored, concentrated, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.

“A big beast of a wine, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Slope has loads of blackcurrant and blackberry-styled fruits as well as toasted spice, graphite, licorice, and crushed stone-like aromas and flavors. Structured, full-bodied, and tannic, it has masses of baby fat that will take at least 7-8 years to melt away, yet it’s one satisfying mouthful of a Cabernet today.”
