I love it when a wine has flavors are so deep and penetrating, that it might be described as chilling, spine-tingling and scary good. All three of these descriptors came time mind when I tasted Laird’s 2016 Ghost Ranch Pinot Noir. It was authored by Brian Mox, who spent several vintages crafting the high-scoring Lewis wines, always ranking among the best in the Valley. It comes from an incredible Pinot Noir Vineyard in Carneros where vineyard workers have long reported seeing children between the rows and down by the creek… that would vanish when approached. Eerie! With just a few hundred cases produced, most of the production goes to their wine club. I strongly recommend securing yours before it vanishes…
Made in a deep, velvety style that I love, Laird’s 2016 Ghost Ranch is haunted by spine-tingling allure, laced with shades of wild blueberries, black cherries, vanilla and spices. If you like your Pinot Noirs a little fuller bodied, deep, and rich, I strongly recommend a case of this limited release.

2012 Anantaah Bella’s Blend Spring Mountain District Proprietary Red
ANANTAAH
2012 BELLA’S BLEND
SPRING MOUNTAIN DISTRICT
There’s something magical that happens when a powerful mountain blend has a few extra years in the bottle… As good as they can be at release, they really blossom into something even more incredible with a little extra age. Anantaah’s 2012 Bella’s blend is a prime example and it was created in a deep and elegant style that added to it’s ability to age. And coming from a mountainous area where the bottle prices are generally as steep as the terrain, it’s extremely rare to come across a wine like this at under $80/btl.
Originating from the Madrone Vineyard located at 1,900 feet in elevation, this deep, velvety red possesses a treasure chest of layers and remarkable balance. Perpetually changing and evolving in the glass, layer after layer of impeccably well-balanced flavors coat your palate in an abundance of dark fruits and sweet, velvety tannins. Aged for nearly two full years in barrels and now with around 3 1/2 years of development in the bottle, this wine is gorgeous right now and has the structure to go another decade.

2012 BELLA’S BLEND
SPRING MOUNTAIN DISTRICT
Retails at: $75.00/btl
Winery Notes: “… Deep dark purple in color, with the initial aromatics of blackberries. After you roll it around on your palette the dark plum, blackberries and dark cherries open up with a touch of minerality; the finish is long and lingering as the flavors continue to unravel. Wait for the finish….is that a bit of spice…”
2014 Cimarossa Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
CIMAROSSA
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2014 HOWELL MOUNTAIN
RIVE DI CIMAROSSA
This profound interpretation of Howell Mountain Cabernet was created by legendary winemaker Mia Klein, whose track record includes making wines for Dalla Valle, Spottswoode, Araujo, Viader, and Chappellet, as well as being named Winemaker of the Year by Food & Wine Magazine. Howell Mountain wines are revered for their authoritative power, depth and towering structure and it takes a skilled artisan like Mia Klein to add an element of elegance. Mia perfectly harnessed each wild and unbridled characteristic and led them down the path of perfect precision. The 2014 oozes inky dark berries, freshly ground coffee, graphite and subtle licorice and continually offers up new elements with aeration. With the average cost of Howell Mountain Cabernet likely well over $100, I wouldn’t wait to add this one to your cellar.
This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon includes all ten vineyard blocks on Cimarossa’s Estate where elevations range from 1600 to 2100 feet. Created from five distinct Cabernet clones grown in several different soil types, the 2014 is stunningly complex yet perfectly balanced. Housed for 22 months in oak, the 2014 has everything that I look for in top-quality Howell Mountain Cabernet and with a touch of elegance that makes it easy to love.

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate: “The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Rive Di Cimarossa has a dense ruby/purple color, classic lead pencil shavings intermixed with blackcurrant, mulberry and blackberry fruit. That dense color is followed by a full-bodied wine with sweet tannin, low acidity and outstanding ripeness and purity. Drink it now and over the next 15-20 years.” 92 Points

2014 Blind Tasting Napa Valley Proprietary Red
BLIND TASTING

PROPRIETARY RED
2014 NAPA VALLEY
Have you ever wondered why New World Blends are so good? The reason is the unrestricted rules that allow winemakers to blend any varietals together, unlike what you might find in some areas of the Old World. A perfect example is the unabashedly Californian 2014 Blind Tasting Proprietary Red. It has a core of Old Vine Zinfandel, amplified by 19% Petite Sirah, which adds depth and succulent blue fruits and then it’s taken up yet another notch with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from Mount Veeder, adding even more structure and backbone. This wine is absolutely perfect with everything from BBQ to Burgers and everything in between, and it’s always a crowd-favorite. If you haven’t experienced this truly California style Red Blend, here’s a great opportunity to do so, but don’t wait too long because there were only 6 barrels produced.
A virtual bungie-jump for your palate, with a free-falling burst of blackberry pie, interwoven with violets, crushed blueberries and black raspberries, the 2014 is firing on all cylinders right now. A wine of deep power and focused intensity, the 2014 blend spent 20 months in oak and benefiting from over a year of development inside the bottle, it’s drinking absolutely beautifully now. Hitting the palate with incredible fervency, giving way to a rush of irresistible fruit, displayed with terrific clarity. strongly recommend you jump at the chance to secure a case. You’ll thank me later.

Tasting Notes: “Seductive aromas of ripe black plum, crushed blackberries, white Spring flowers and a touch of sweet vanilla jump from the glass. A dense core of perfectly balanced black cherry, crushed blueberries, blackberry preserves with a touch of black pepper unfurl and expand across your palate. Opulent without being too heavy, the supple fruit tannins combine with a very long finish to make your mouth water and beg for the next sip. Absolutely delicious and ready to drink right now, or you can hold until 2024.”

Valdez winery is owned by Ulises Valdez, one of California’s most sought after wine growers. When he’s not farming vineyards for Aubert, Kistler, Paul Hobbs and others, he’s cultivating his dream of building a successful brand. This Zinfandel arose from a 5 acre vineyard in Alexander Valley that’s planted to nearly century old vines, this wine exhibits all the qualities that I look for in Old Vine Zinfandel. Rosenblum fans might also recognize this vineyard from single vineyard Zinfandels that they produced in the 1990’s.

2015 LEGEND
PROPRIETARY RED
Retails at: $44.00/btl
From Tasting Panel: “This proprietary red blend (25% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, 15% Zinfandel and 10% Tannat) is sourced [mostly from] the estate vineyard, situated between Mt. Hood and the Sonoma Mountains. The perfume is primarily floral: gardenia, red rose petals – with accents on red plum and an echo of black pepper. The palate is a silk road with gritty chocolate tannins. But the ruby slippers that carry you down the path bursts with red plum, dark chocolate cherries, exotic jasmine and grilled meat with soy sauce. The finish is pleasurable with a creamy cedar note.” 95 Points

2013 Cabaud Mon Hommage Cabernet Sauvignon
CABAUD
2013 MON HOMMAGE
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
You might know winemaker Luc Morlet from his work at Newton Cellars, Peter Michael, or from his own label Morlet which is raking in 100 point scores… However, most people haven’t heard of Cabaud, and with their tiny production, there’s no surprise. The previous vintage caught the eye of Robert Parker who scored the 2012 91-94 Points and now with the 2013 vintage, which Robert Parker said might be the finest vintage he’s experienced over the last 37 years, I wouldn’t wait for the scores to secure the 2013. Finding new wines made by top winemakers, that are somewhat unheard of, pays off big at times… I would estimate Morlet’s Cabs to range from $165 to around $300/btl. At $130 Cabaud is a killer deal…I cannot put into words how incredible this wine is.
Combining fruit from Glass Mountain in St Helena with Beckstoffer’s iconic Missouri Hopper Vineyard in Oakville, you can taste the magic of these two sites, each enhancing the best qualities of the other and melding together perfectly. After resting for nearly 20 months in barrel and for another 3 years in the bottle, this 2013 is mind-bogglingly great! It reminded me of when I first tasted Humanitas Signum and the recent Keever Inspirado, yet ramped up a notch. This is absolutely one of the best bottles in the shop under $150/btl right now…

Tasting Notes: “A dense purple color is accompanied by mesmerizing wet stone and liquid minerals interwoven with blackberry jam, crushed blueberries, red currant and spring flowers. The full-bodied opulence, sweet tannin, and extraordinary richness combine in a hypnotic way. It is the wine equivalent of sliding in between satin sheets and finding warmth and suppleness, but also balanced firmness and incredible tone, all in perfect balance. Let your mind wander…” 97 Points, Kevin M. Vogt, Master Sommelier
2015 Katherine Goldschmidt Crazy Creek Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
KATHERINE GOLDSCHMIDT
I’m often asked what’s the best Cab under $20. I can honestly say that I haven’t found one that I like better than this Katherine Goldschmidt at this price point. The wine also earned an incredible 94 Point score in the January issue of Tasting Panel Magazine and at $19.99/btl, there’s simply nothing like it. Great wines never last long, especially when they’re drinking as well as this one is right now. The winery has already released the 2016, but we couldn’t say goodbye to this one yet… It comes from a single vineyard which for years went to Simi for their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($75)… At just $19.99/btl, Katherine Goldschmidt’s Crazy Creek Cabernet Sauvignon perfectly expresses just how inspiring Cabernet Sauvignon can be from Alexander Valley.
Ramping everything up a notch or two in terms of sheer power and concentration, the 2015 Crazy Creek releases a dense core and remarkable palate presence, unlike anything I’ve tasted at this price. It saturates your palate in an abundance of chocolate covered cherries, crushed blackberries, roasted coffee and black currants, and just like the previous two vintages, this beauty out-performs most Cabernets at double its price…

From The Tasting Panel: “Named for Goldschmidt’s middle daughter, the wine’s grapes hail from Crazy Creek, a vineyard known to produce some iconic wines. Big, bright, blue fruit notes on the nose are meaty, with a chocolate espresso twist and dry tannins showing on the palate. It’s a little masterpiece with a dark chocolate finish that way over delivers on price-to-quality.” 94 Points

2016 Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Chardonnay
PAHLMEYER
2016 CHARDONNAY
NAPA VALLEY
Becoming Napa Valley’s first Cult Chardonnay after Demi Moore tried to seduce Michael Douglas in the hit movie Disclosure back in 1994, Pahlmeyer became nearly impossible to acquire, overnight. More than two decades later and it’s still making a powerful statement of prestige, along with three 95 Point reviews, the demand is still going full-bore. It’s made in a style that has remarkable weight, dimension and intensity, and under the guidance of Bibiana Gonzalez Rave it’s only gotten better. She’s added a level of elegance to the wines that marries perfectly with the classic rich, unctuous style that Pahlmeyer is known for.
Created from the winery’s Estate Vineyard, as well as Antinori’s Antica Vineyard on Atlas Peak and Larry Hyde’s iconic Vineyard in Carneros, the 2016 has all the ingredients necessary to be everything you’d want in a powerful yet elegant Napa Valley Chardonnay. With attention to every minute detail, the fruit was picked at night before being rigorously inspected by hand at the winery. Kept for 11 months in 100% new Francois Freres oak Barrels, the wine is simply gorgeous.

“… Apricot, honey, dried flowers and lightly buttery notes get a kick of energy from the freshness of vintage and the personality of the mountain sites (Estate and Antica) that inform this bottling, Winemaker Bibiana Gonzalez-Rave has brought an added level of finesse to the Pahlmeyer Chardonnay.” 95 Points

“The 2016 Chardonnay has a lovely savory, yeasty/toasty nose over a core of warm grapefruit, fresh apricots and allspice with a touch of candied ginger. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling stone fruit and spicy layers, supported by great freshness and finishing long and creamy.” 95 Points

“Gorgeous aromatics of heady voluptuousness conjure elements of caramel, honey and baked apple behind a golden hue of color in this memorable, no-holds-barred white. The flavors follow through along a lengthy layered pathway lined in sparks of anise and key lime, finishing in juicy crisp acidity.” 95 Points

2013 Von Strasser Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
VON STRASSER
2013 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
DIAMOND MOUNTAIN
When I look back at my top-selling wine of all time, which was the 2007 Ascent Diamond Mountain Cabernet, I can’t help but to find similarities in Von Strasser’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was also created exclusively from Diamond Mountain fruit. An idyllic expression of the areas distinct volcanic terroir, this stunningly elegant and penetrating wine saturates your taste buds with an abundance of blackberry cassis, mineral laced raspberry, Ghirardelli chocolate and roasted coffee. The overall texture, is both deep and elegant and foreshadows the long and expansive finish. It’s rare to find a Diamond Mountain Cabernet that we can offer you , and this is the first time since Ascent that we’ve found one for you…
Von Strasser was a fixture on Diamond Mountain for more than two decades and while they sold the vineyard in 2015, they kept the brand, and purchased a new winery on Silverado Trail where the wines are now being made. Von Strasser gained valuable experience at Trefethen and Newton wineries and he has extensive experience working with Diamond Mountain fruit. His 2013 Cabernet is drinking so beautifully right now, it was astonishing how elegantly this wine hits your palate and it continues to impress all the way through the finish.

2014 Barlow Calistoga Merlot
BARLOW
2014 MERLOT
CALISTOGA
Many of California’s best Merlots come from the sleepy town of Calistoga, on the Northern-most end of Napa Valley. The area is distinguished by volcanic soils and the largest diurnal temperature variation in Napa Valley. Daytime highs and night time lows span up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and while the hot daytime temperatures allow the grapes to develop deep and compelling flavors, the cool nights help to maintain acidity and structure. With all of the contributing factors working in unison, this area has proven that it can produce some of the best Merlot in California… Just look at last year’s #1 wine in the Wine Spectator. Interestingly, Duckhorn’s iconic 3 Palms Vineyard is just a short distance from Barlow’s Estate Vineyard and I believe the micro-climate on the South-Eastern edge of Calistoga where both of these Merlots originate is perfectly suited to produce some of Napa’s best Merlot.
Barlow’s Estate Vineyard is farmed by father and son team and you can literally taste the care that goes into each bottle. They produce just over 300 cases of their Merlot and at $35/btl the level of quality is literally shocking when you taste it. The 2014 was housed for 22 months in oak and has blossomed for 2 years in the bottle. You simply have to try this…

2015 Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay
CHATEAU MONTELENA
The best wines evoke memories, intellectual thoughts and feelings when you taste them, and every time I taste Chateau Montelena’s Chardonnay, thoughts of Independence and patriotism come to mind. Two hundred years after the Declaration of Independence was signed, Chateau Montelena made a pivotal statement at the 1976 Judgement in Paris when their 1973 Chardonnay came in 1st place. It eclipsed all other French and California Chardonnays at the historic tasting, as depicted in the movie Bottle Shock… Continuing their legacy of producing enchanting, brightly focused Chardonnays, the 2015 is remarkably tropical this year with bright, freshly picked kumquat, nectarine, lemon oil and candied ginger. Symbolizing the American dream, hard work and independence, here’s a chance to own the most celebrated Chardonnay in US history…
Remaining true to their roots and focusing on the pure expression of fruit, crisp acidity and mineral finish, Chateau Montelena is unlike many California Chardonnay producers that have adopted a creamy, buttery, profile with a heavier oak influence. Kept for just 10 months in neutral French oak barrels, the 2015 is bright and focused with vivid Island fruits, candied lemon, shaved almonds and tangerine oil. I strongly recommend a case of this iconic Napa Valley Chardonnay for your cellar.

From Vinous: “Just bottled, the 2015 Chardonnay is shaping up to be a gorgeous wine. The warmer vintage has resulted in a slightly richer style of Chardonnay, although the house style built on energy and tension is still very much in evidence. Candied lemon, white flowers and mint are nicely textured. Soft, enveloping and gracious, the 2015 will drink well with minimal cellaring.” 92 Points
