THE MASCOT

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2012 NAPA VALLEY

2012 The Mascot Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Ever wonder what happens to the grapes from the younger vines of some of the top wine estates in Napa? The wine from these vineyards would simply be way too good to sell off, so in this case, they made an incredible marriage of wines from their three amazing brands. The Mascot is a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon born from distinct hillside vineyards; specifically from the comparatively younger vines of BOND, Harlan Estate, and Promontory. It started out as a small project in the 2008 vintage, championed by Will Harlan and shared among the family, winemaking team, and close friends. Drawing fruit from blocks of more recently replanted vineyards between 7-15 years of age, The Mascot has such deep and expansive flavors and is so compelling, it’ll make you question how you got a wine of this quality, for this price.  Grab some now before this Mascot disappears…
Although the winery doesn’t specify exact grape varietal percentages in each vintage, The Mascot is always 90 – 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. This fantastic 2012 Cabernet perfectly reflects the breed and heritage of its incredible origins and will make you grin from ear to ear when you taste it.

Winery Notes: “The growing season of 2012 was defined by ideal conditions – warm, gentle, and even – and the resulting wine reflects this benevolence. The nose is wrapped around a core of red fruit and subtle spice. Upon entry, a spherical density expands into lush, vibrant warmth. Continuing easily across the palate, finely textured tannins resolve into a lengthy finish. The 2012 is generous and welcoming in its youth, and for the patient it promises deeper layers as the years pass.”

2017 ROSÉ
OAKVILLE

2017 Pop 300 Oakville RoseFor wine lovers, being in-the-know can sometimes result in drinking a wine that performs so stratospherically above the realm of possibilities for it’s price point and type, that you feel like you stole something when you taste it. POP 300’s Oakville Rosé gives you that feeling and here’s why… Many would argue that the To-Kalon Vineyard in the heart of Oakville is the greatest vineyard in California.  A little known secret is that there’s a tiny block of Pinot Noir in the center of this magical vineyard.  It’s called the Wilsey Vineyard and in a case where location and being connected takes you the distance, POP 300 has my vote.  The aromas alone give you a rush of jubilation and compelling notes of bing cherry, crushed sea shells, minerals and wild raspberries let you know what you’re about to get into… Oh yeah and at $29.99/btl, it’s truly one of the best Rosé wines produced in California.

It’s well known that Oakville produces some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon fruit in the world, but very few people would know that Pinot Noir even exits in this iconic region.  This is a truly unique, Rose of Pinot Noir by Luke Russ, whose day job is the Commercial Director at O’Shaughnessey Winery, might leave you in shock and disbelief by just how good it is.  Just don’t let the shock last too long, because it will be gone before you know it…

2014 MOUNT VEEDER

2014 Calculated Risk Mount Veeder Proprietary Red
I’ve always found a mystical element in Mount Veeder fruit that always draws me in.  It’s the largest AVA within Napa Valley but the rugged terrain limits production to just 1.3% of Napa Valley grapes.  Yielding small, powerful berries, the sandstone and shale soils set this Mountain apart from all others in Napa.  It’s also the coolest Mountain which allows the grapes to have a longer hang-time so they can develop into something majestic.  One of the area’s hallmarks is the fine-grained tannins, along with brambly Mountain berries, stony minerality, and exceptional concentration.  The only thing keeping us from enjoying Mount Veeder wine every day is their scarcity and the often high-elevation price tag.  Of the ten 2014 Mount Veeder Cabernets that I found listed in the Wine Spectator, the average price was well over $100/btl. This Calculated Risk is sure to pay off…

A calculated blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon this remarkable representation of Mount Veeder hails from a vintage unanimously recognized for its unrivaled quality.  Exhibiting all of the characteristics of Mount Veeder fruit, from the stunning weight and concentration to the stony minerality, mystical bramble fruits and floral, this wine has it all.  The only risk will be waiting too long to secure your case…

Occasionally, we offer a wine so great that it becomes an object of legend, and this one is at the top of that list.  You who were able to get some, loved it so much that many of you immediately ordered more once you tasted it.  We then try to secure enough to remind you how spectacular it is  and offer it one last time…  As I’ve tasted this wine over and over again since it’s release, I’ve fallen even more in love with it and based on the comments and re-orders that we’ve received so have you.  With a resonant finish and expansive flavors so deep and compelling, they leave you thinking about the wine for days after tasting it, so this is a wine that you simply shouldn’t miss…  It’s authored by Celia Welch, (Scarecrow, D.R. Stephens, Barbour, Dalla Valle…)
Checking in at 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, inspired by additions of Merlot and Malbec, the 2013 Inspirado saturates your taste buds in otherworldly levels of opulence. And while there are a lot of great Napa Valley Cabernet based wines available at under $100/btl, few approach this level of quality.  This is simply the best red blend we’ve had at this price point in quite some time.

Winery Notes: “Aromas of dark purple berries, mulling spices, toasted hazelnuts and wild anise waft from the glass when one swirls this ripe, complex Bordeaux-style blend.  On the palate, the wine shows a texture of dark chocolate; thick and rich with just enough textural grip to add a sense of youth to the finish.  Multi-layered sensations of toast, vanilla, ripe fruit and mineral notes weave themselves through the palate impression, with a lingering sense of ripe, intense cassis.

2014 Horse & Plow Blockhouse Vineyard GrenacheA farmer needs faith that a bountiful harvest will come, and sometimes when trying new wines, faith plays a role when discovering one that could completely change your perspective on an unfamiliar varietal. It just might open up new fields of curiosity and paths to enjoyment. Horse & Plow’s single vineyard Grenache is from Yountville, just a stone’s throw from our shop, and it completely rocked my world when I tasted it.  This beautifully proportioned and profoundly pleasing red should be the wikipedia reference for California Grenache.  With a round, velvet lined core, the 2014 envelopes your palate in a bumper crop of plump, juicy flavors with red plum, wild berries, mineral, cocoa and subtle spice.  The only down-side comes from the realization that there were only 6 barrels produced.
Unearthed by husband and wife winemaking team Chris Condos and Suzanne Hagins, who combined their talents to really shine in this remarkable expression of Grenache. Chris began his career as winemaker at Pine Ridge, and he’s also consulting winemaker at Kathryn Kennedy, and Suzanne gained valuable experience in the cellar at DeLoach, David Bruce and Goldeneye wineries… I strongly recommend filling your saddle bags with as much as you can carry… You’ll be glad you did.

2014 NAPA VALLEY

2014 Laird Jillian's Blend Proprietary RedWhen Napa Valley’s preeminent farming family uses just 3% of their grapes to produce their own wine, they’re able to hand select the absolute best grapes, producing wines of unrivaled quality.  We’ve always loved Laird’s Jillian’s Blend, but our affection was further solidified when we tasted the new vintage side-by-side another Napa Cab Blend that we love, which retails at $70/btl. We unanimously agreed that the Laird eclipsed it by a healthy margin.  The 2014 is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is sourced from the winery’s renowned Mast Ranch and Linda Vista Vineyards.  Their Mast Ranch Cab sells for $80/btl… Because we love it so much, we worked some magic to be able to offer you the wine at our lowest price since their 2011 vintage.

Developing for 21 months in oak, the 2014 has a striking core with layers of blueberry and blackberry fruit, intertwined with espresso roast, liquid floral, cassis and black chocolate.  Those of you who’ve enjoyed earlier vintages of Laird’s popular Jillian’s Blend, likely need no further convincing.  l can’t wait for you to try the 2014…

TERRA BLANCA VINEYARD

2014 Solamente Terra Blanca Vineyard Pinot Noir
Appropriately named Solamente (translates to only), this was the only Pinot Noir on my mind, after a grueling 100 wines tasted.   All I could think about is how perfectly this wine hit the spot, with it’s layered and silky mouthfeel, depth and elegance, this gorgeous Pinot tastes every bit like a top-level California Pinot Noir, and the only difference is that it doesn’t have the premium price tag that normally comes with one…  It was composed by Rolando Herrera, who gained valuable first-hand experience as Director of Winemaking for legendary winemaker Paul Hobbs.  Layers of dark fruits emerge, delicately woven throughout are subtle expressions of sassafras, wild flowers, English tea and spice.  At $65/btl retail this wine would put a big smile on your face.

Arising from the Terra Blanca Vineyard located Carneros, the 2013 perfectly marries Dijon and Pommard clones, both icons for producing wines of notable elegance with profound aromas.  After quietly resting for 12 months in oak barrels, this 2014 Pinot Noir is shining brightly now and is poised to drink beautifully over the next 5-7 years.

LIBRARY RELEASE

2001 Young Ridge Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Library ReleaseHave you ever pulled a wine out of the back of your cellar and been stunned by how well it was drinking?  When an age-worthy wine develops over a decade or more, the complex chemical reactions between the sugars, acids and tannins can transform and alter the aroma, color, mouthfeel and flavor.  Not all wine has the ability to develop into something far better than what it was upon release, but when all of the contributing factors are perfectly balanced, I’ve tasted $8 wines that have outperformed current vintage wines at 20 times their price.  Young Ridge’s 2001 Napa Valley Cabernet awed me over the way that it’s positively developed.  A perfumed bouquet grabbed me at the first whiff with complex, compelling and hedonistic notes that are profoundly pleasing.  On the palate the wine is deep, penetrating and silky, with fine grained tannins, dark berries, cassis, coco and baking spices.  This wine hit my palate beautifully.

Originating from a single vineyard perched high on a ridge in the rolling western hills of Napa Valley, this finely sculpted and beautifully detailed 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is firing on all cylinders right now.  If you love perfectly aged Cabernet Sauvignon, and don’t want to have to wait 15 years to enjoy one… This one’s for you.

2015 Prisoner Wine Company Derange Proprietary RedBest described by the catchy slogan from the early 1900’s, Go big, or go home, which references experiencing something to the fullest and being bold and extravagant, Prisoner Wine Company found a way to bottle it… Tipping the scales of extract, and deep chocolaty flavors, this larger-than-life Cabernet Sauvignon Blend hails from iconic sites including Lee Hudson’s renowned Carneros Vineyard, Sage Canyon on Spring Mountain, Heitz Taplin, to list a few.  Held captive for 18 months in French oak barrels, this bold, dramatic and monstrous blend was a tough fugitive to catch.  We’ve imprisoned bottles in our shop for months, and just got the go-ahead to release them to you…
Created in big, masculine style, the 2015 Dérangé is an unapologetic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel.  Bursting with intense black fruits, clove spice, unsweetened berry cobbler, black chocolates, and more chocolate… this deep and velvety wine has a finish that goes on and on.  I strongly recommend securing a case before it’s too late.
