“Boomslang is a multi-vintage blend of 2019, 2021, and 2022 fruit, and is crafted by Kevin Morrisey (formerly of Ehlers Estate). It’s an incredibly easy-drinking, smooth Cabernet with just enough fine-grained tannins to layer in a bit of grippy texture, but for the most part, it’s a pretty, red-fruited elegant Cabernet with good tension and energy. This makes me wish California wineries would do more non-vintage blends.”

2019 Rubia Proprietary Red Napa Valley

Margaret and Joe Valenzuela founded Rubia Wine Cellars as a tribute to their love and deep desire to become a part of the winemaking world. The winery focuses on limited-production wines and strong friendships, allowing them access to renowned vineyards.

To pursue their vision, Margaret and Joe enlisted Julien Fayard as their winemaker, who had previously worked at much-heralded French vineyards such as Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte before relocating to the United States, assuming the role of Director of Winemaking under Philippe Melka.

The 2019 production yielded 200 cases of powerful and concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon from hillside vineyards in Calistoga and Howell Mtn blended with 45% Coombsville AVA Merlot. The wine matured for 20 months in French oak before release and is now drinking beautifully with a long, resonant finish.

“The 2019 Croze Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon begins with a rich nose of sweet blackberries, milk chocolate, vibrant black currants, Spring violets, and vanilla bean. “Coming from the Spence’s vineyard at 1,900’ elevation on top of Howell Mountain, this blockbuster Cabernet reminds me of watching a Cheetah run in slow motion. It’s firm and bursting with power, yet sleek, graceful, and elegant at the same time. It begins with a gorgeous nose of explosive black plums, fragrant violets, dusty cocoa powder, wet slate, dried mushrooms, and vanilla hints. This mind-blowing concoction is perfectly ripe on the palate, with concentrated crushed blackberries, exotic wild currants, stewed plums, baker’s chocolate, and scorched earth. It is wonderfully firm and amazingly complex and long on the palate, with mouth-quenching crushed-velvet tannins that, time after time, left me yearning for another sip. It is a decadent, amazingly sultry stunner now that will continue to drop jaws for well over another decade.”

2017 Vinehouse Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain
Vinehouse’s Howell Mountain vineyard, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Saint Macaire, sits on the volcanic Aiken soils found on the mountain looking over Napa Valley at 1,732 feet. Saint Macaire is a rare varietal from South-West France with a deep, dense color from high levels of anthocyanins that soften robust tannins from Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.

The winery, owned by Lesley Warner and Alan Peirson, co-founder of Peirson Meyer Winery, combines decades of experience into 150 cases of 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with 8% Saint Macaire. This incredibly rare blend allows approachability in its youth, but the structure from the Cabernet Sauvignon will let this wine develop in the cellar as long as you have patience.

Jacob and Frederik Beringer purchased 215 acres of prime Napa Valley land in 1868, solidifying Beringer’s reputation as a critical player among the first wineries in the valley. Later on, Beringer purchased a handful of other premium vineyard locations ranging from the valley floor to the highest peaks, garnering extreme complexity and versatility in winemaking styles.

The Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is selected from the best plots of their reserve vineyards, vinified separately, aged 18 months in new French oak, and another 16 months in the bottle. The winery is the first and only in history to have a red wine and white wine honored as the #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine. The fabulous 2018 vintage is already gaining enthusiastic praise, with many scores in the very high 90s.
