Stéphane Vedeau is a young, energetic winemaker whom Robert Parker writes is “seriously talented” and “quickly emerging as a star of the southern Rhone.” He believes in gentle winemaking and extended macerations at low alcohol levels, which result in palpably elegant wines. My first impression and initial tasting notes when tasting his 2017 were “killer focus, incredible fruit, spice, and love at first taste.”
 
La Ferme du Mont farms their Chateauneuf-du-Pape vineyards biodynamically. This bottling combines 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre made in a vibrant, highly-focused style that’s so well-balanced that the alcohol is nearly imperceptible.
 
Stéphane is a 3rd generation winemaker whose passion for sustainable, harmonious winemaking and the Grenache variety is evident in his wines. At less than $50, you have to try this one.

Arising from the family’s historic vineyards in the Valle de Ugo, which range 3 to 4 thousand feet elevation, the 2017 release is both concentrated, clean, and firmly balanced.

“Our motto is no whimpy Pinot Noir! I approach this varietal as a lighter, yet sturdy red wine from our portfolio. We work towards a balanced fruit load, per vine, in the vineyard. We use our clones to create nuance and texture in the final wine. There is nothing formulaic about Pinot Noir. It is much more challenging to produce than Cabernet Sauvignon. We strive for a fruit forward expression that is more dark rather than red berry. We de-stem everything and cold soak for no more than 3 days to achieve a color and tannin profile that is more structured. Ty Caton’s motto is to produce handcrafted wines of distinction with an authentic sense of place from his incredible Estate vineyard on Moon Mountain. He divided his 40-acre vineyard into distinct blocks defined by sun exposures, soil type, incline, clone, and elevation to help achieve this. His wines showcase their varietal intently and are powerful yet perfectly restrained and balanced. Each year his Winemaker’s Cuvee offers a fantastic portrayal of his entire property and the vintage itself, and at less than thirty bucks, the value is substantial.
 
The Caton Vineyard is on the Sonoma side of Mount Veeder. The well-drained red volcanic soils are also home to icons like the Monte Rosso, which was made famous by Louis Martini, and the Frederick’s Vineyard used by Turley.

Clos du Caillou is a top producer of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, who at their core are stewards of their land. They’ve practiced biodynamic viticulture since the early 2000’s, and they were certified organic in 2010. Interestingly, their Old Vine Cotes-du-Rhone comes from a parcel walled by renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards. It was intentionally left out of the appellation by the owner, following a bureaucratic spat back in 1936. It’s truly one of the best Cotes-du-Rhone wines made.
 
The winery forged Clos du Caillou’s old-vine Cotes-du-Rhone Cuvée Unique from 45-year-old vines grown in sandy soils, which lends to the silky elegance and fine-grained texture that’s become a hallmark of their wines.
