2017 Grey Stack Dry Stack Vineyard Rosemary's Block Sauvignon Blanc
It’s all about the vineyard, and when I think of California’s most memorable Sauvignon Blancs, I’m continually drawn to Dry Stack Vineyard in Bennett Valley.  That feeling was set in stone when I tasted Grey Stack’s latest release which has already scored 94 Points (that’s particularly high for Sauvignon Blanc.)  Perfectly expressing the essence of Dry Stack… Intense, vivid and with copious rocky minerals and abundant yet detailed notes of fresh guava, ripe tangerine, Island mango and mineral infused citrus.  You might think $32 is a little high for Sauvignon Blanc, but when you taste the wine it’s actually a stunning value for a wine of this magnitude.

Brought to life by winemaker Patrick Sullivan whose vast experience includes making wine at Peter Michael, Paul Hobbs, Lewis Cellars and Rudd.  The Dry Stack Vineyard is strategically positioned in Bennett Valley which lies Southeast of Santa Rosa along a minor Mountain range.  With a cooler climate with heavy maritime influence, the vineyard itself sits at 550 feet in elevation on a rocky bench and produces fruit of magical qualities.  If you love Sauvignon Blanc, or better yet, even if you don’t… Try this one and you’ll probably never look back.

From The Wine Enthusiast:This block is home to a mysterious clone of Sauvignon Blanc that appears to be the only one of its kind in the region and thought to hail originally from Northern Italy. The resulting wine is citrus-driven on the nose and on the palate-a pure expression that shows complexity and rich layers of flavor, with an intensity of lemongrass.” 94 Points

Tasting Notes: “… lovingly inspired by the Loire Valley. White peach and apricot, yellow grapefruit, and lemon blossom aromas erupt from the glass. These aromatics carry through and lend a dry fruitiness to the mineral driven pallet. The wine has very appealing ripeness and great balancing acidity, where the complexity of stone fruit and green apples, yield to a very citrusy, crisp finish.”

2015 Walter Hansel Cuvee Alyce Chardonnay
When Walter Hansel Winery comes up in a conversation, it’s easy to reminisce about how they’re a model of consistency, and how their wines continually outshine the vast majority in their category.  Then comes the reviews, and they’re second to none.  Robert Parker writes that they’re “… consistently terrific wines… realistically priced… consumers couldn’t have a better friend than proprietor Stephen Hansel.”  When your brand sets a standard of undeviating quality and exceptionally high scores, it can be tough to stand out among your own vast accomplishments.  Walter Hansel has done just that with their flagship Cuvee Alyce Chardonnay…

Alyce is named after Stephen’s mother and makes her entrance from an elevated section of the vineyard that’s planted to a mix of Kistler clones brought over from Hudson and Hyde Vineyards.  Having yields of just 2 tons per acre Alyce always has remarkable power and intensity.  It’s also kept for around 3-4 months longer on the lees and is regarded for being the biggest and most opulent of all of the single vineyard Chardonnays.  With that, it also sells out the quickest… Here’s a chance to secure yours.

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate:The 2015 Chardonnay Cuvee Alyce (named after his mother ) is produced from a field blend of Hyde and Hudson Wente selections. This is a big Chardonnay made from tiny berries. Orange marmalade, tangerine oil, honeysuckle and citrus are all present in this beautifully textured, full-bodied Chardonnay that shows little evidence of oak. It should drink well for at least a decade.” 93-95 Points

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate: “…The 2014 Chardonnay The North Slope comes from sandy, rich and fertile Goldridge soils. This wine exhibits plenty of honeyed brioche, with a greenish hue to its light-gold color, followed by notes of buttery hazelnuts, poached pear, pineapple and citrus oil. This is French in style as well, but with an almost lavish richness like a top-flight French Bâtard-Montrachet. It should drink well for 5-6 years. Some of the best values in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir emerge from Stephen Hansel’s winery in the Russian River Valley.”    93 Points

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate: “… The deepest color of many of these Pinot Noirs, the wine has loads of damp earth, spice box and forest floor, this is a deep blue-fruited Pinot with a lovely texture, plenty of body, surprising concentration and richness. This is a stunner from 18-year-old vines. Drink it over the next decade or more…. This wine has a dense purple color, a gorgeously compelling nose of forest floor, spring flowers, blue, red and black fruits, followed by a full-bodied, layered and concentrated Pinot Noir that is as light as a ballerina on the palate, but at the same time, intense and rich. The finish just goes on and on. Drink it over the next decade or more.”   94-96 Points

2016 Heir Apparent Napa Valley Proprietary Red
Ever wonder how we are able to offer these amazingly high-quality wines with such dramatic discounts? It comes down to patience, confidence and buying power. We have the patience for our tasting panel to taste through over 80 wines each week, looking for only the best wines available. Then, our panel’s consensus gives us the confidence that we’ve made the right choices on which wines to work with.  Finally, we have the buying power to commit to, and purchase large quantities in advance, so we can negotiate the best deals. It is somewhat risky on our part, but frankly, we are pretty darn good at it, and the quality and value shows through in each incredible bottle we offer.

Case in point, this Heir Apparent Proprietary Red seduces you with intense aromas of floral infused red fruits, minerals and chocolaty espresso, the 2016 wraps your palate in a velvety embrace and leaves your taste buds yearning for another sip.  Combining fruit from St Helena and Rutherford, the tension created between the two distinct areas lends greatly to the complexity. Calling on all five Bordeaux Varietals, the 2016 spent 16 month in oak and it’s already providing enormous levels of pleasure, and should drink well over the next 10-12 years. Another winner!

Winery Notes:With a beautiful dark red hue, the wine opens up with seductive aromas of fresh violets, dried rose petals, ripe tree fruits, wild berries, licorice and spice. On the palate, lively notes of fresh baked dark cherry pie, red plum and ripe raspberry are layered with zesty notes of pepper, cloves, ginger, roasted walnuts, and the gentle use of oak which allow the flavors to pop. As the wine opens up, these flavors are balanced with soft tannins, tangy acidity, and (a) long finish...” 92 Points “Sommelier to the Stars” Christopher Sawyer

Victory is a thousand times sweeter when you’re the underdog… Just ask Bill Foley who’s Las Vegas Golden Knights just shocked the world by making it to the Stanley Cup finals in their inaugural season. And scoring yet another goal, Bill’s 2014 Rutherford Estate Meritage pulls a hat trick with its mouth puckeringly good, deep, velvety flavors and scores a power play goal with thundering authority.  With an entry price significantly lower than others in its division you could say that this Meritage is an underdog story of it’s own.  In this case the victory will be yours, when you score this wine for less than forty bucks.

Carved from Rutherford, an area long celebrated for its exceptional terroir and dusty tannins, as conveyed by Andre Tchelistcheff, legendary winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyards, “Cabernets need a touch of that Rutherford dust,” and this one grabbed my full attention. These players are made up of all five Bordeaux varietals and bursts onto the scene with pulverized dark berries, dried violets dusted with cocoa, pipe tobacco and subtle cedar.  At $45/btl this wine cross-checks every box… At $39.99/btl, you’ll want to clear some serious room in the wine cellar…

An absolute crowd-pleaser, and those of you who’ve enjoyed this blend each vintage might notice the 2016 exploits a greater percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon than their previous 6 vintages.  With Cabernet as the dominant grape, the 2016 is nicely concentrated, and on the palate, the wine’s hallmark velvety embrace comes dressed with provocative black cherries, blueberries, dried violets and cocoa.

Everybody loves rooting for the winning team and when your team is performing at the top of their game, contagious levels of jubilation fill the room.  Likewise, the bouquet on the Two Sisters Lindsay’s Vineyard Pinot filled our tasting room and induced similar feelings of excitement.  After all, this is another winner brought to us by Bill Foley who’s winning streak of wine and hockey has no limits. Charging from the glass like his Golden Knights on a break-away play, with crushed candied fruits, wild rose, spice box and white pepper that weave in and out in perfect formation.  Big, powerful and complex, like a dominant starting line-up, but with as much brawn as this Pinot displays, it has a feminine touch of detail, balance and finesse which makes it incredibly appealing.  This wine will have your friends and family cheering for another sip.

Emerging from the Lindsay’s Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills AVA, an area that’s revered for producing Pinot Noirs with exceptional aromatics, terrific acidity and remarkable focus, this Pinot made me want to grab my stick and get in the game.  With a 93 Point Score and a price that leave you pounding the glass, you’ll want to make a power-play on this one…

2014 Solamente Terra Blanca Vineyard Pinot Noir
Appropriately named Solamente (translates to only), this was the only Pinot Noir on my mind, after a grueling 100 wines tasted.   All I could think about is how perfectly this wine hit the spot, with it’s layered and silky mouthfeel, depth and elegance, this gorgeous Pinot tastes every bit like a top-level California Pinot Noir, and the only difference is that it doesn’t have the premium price tag that normally comes with one…  It was composed by Rolando Herrera, who gained valuable first-hand experience as Director of Winemaking for legendary winemaker Paul Hobbs.  Layers of dark fruits emerge, delicately woven throughout are subtle expressions of sassafras, wild flowers, English tea and spice.  At $65/btl retail this wine would put a big smile on your face.

Arising from the Terra Blanca Vineyard located Carneros, the 2013 perfectly marries Dijon and Pommard clones, both icons for producing wines of notable elegance with profound aromas.  After quietly resting for 12 months in oak barrels, this 2014 Pinot Noir is shining brightly now and is poised to drink beautifully over the next 5-7 years.

2001 Young Ridge Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Library ReleaseHave you ever pulled a wine out of the back of your cellar and been stunned by how well it was drinking?  When an age-worthy wine develops over a decade or more, the complex chemical reactions between the sugars, acids and tannins can transform and alter the aroma, color, mouthfeel and flavor.  Not all wine has the ability to develop into something far better than what it was upon release, but when all of the contributing factors are perfectly balanced, I’ve tasted $8 wines that have outperformed current vintage wines at 20 times their price.  Young Ridge’s 2001 Napa Valley Cabernet awed me over the way that it’s positively developed.  A perfumed bouquet grabbed me at the first whiff with complex, compelling and hedonistic notes that are profoundly pleasing.  On the palate the wine is deep, penetrating and silky, with fine grained tannins, dark berries, cassis, coco and baking spices.  This wine hit my palate beautifully.

Originating from a single vineyard perched high on a ridge in the rolling western hills of Napa Valley, this finely sculpted and beautifully detailed 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is firing on all cylinders right now.  If you love perfectly aged Cabernet Sauvignon, and don’t want to have to wait 15 years to enjoy one… This one’s for you.
