How do you get an incredible Rutherford Cabernet Blend for $23? Frankly, you don’t, unless something unusual happens… Originally intended to be a Single Vineyard Cabernet, a winemaking miscommunication led to some barrels from other high-end projects getting accidentally blended into the same tank.  The result is an absolutely stunning Rutherford Blend that needs a new home… When I first tasted this wine I was asked to estimate the retail price with no information other than what was on the label.  After considering the focused and penetrating red fruits, classic Rutherford dust characteristics and long, pleasant finish, my number was $75-$95/btl… Turns out it was $95, had it been finished as a single vineyard Rutherford Cabernet.  We knew this wine would leave countless fans wanting more, which was proven by around a 1/2 pallet/week in re-orders that have poured in.  Now the wine is nearly sold out, so if you haven’t stocked up yet, this is the last call… 
 
Originating from Rutherford, an area long celebrated for its exceptional terroir and dusty tannins, this wine embodies many of  the hallmarks that I look for in Rutherford Cabernet. Predominately Cabernet, heightened with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2017 saturates your palate in seductive red berries laced with dried lavender, red currants, iron, and Rutherford dust.   If you look for value Reds from Napa Valley, I strongly recommend that you double or even triple down on this one, before it’s too late…

One of the greatest contributing factors to some American blends being so delicious upon release is the ability for American winemakers to be as creative as they want when making a wine.  They have the unrestricted artistic freedom to blend any varietals together. A perfect example is Y. Rousseau’s Son of a Butcher which utilizes the intense color and firm structure of the Tannat grape, and is made even more compelling with additions of Bordeaux Varietals Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. I’m certain that if you could have seen the grins that came over the faces of our tasting panel when we tasted this wine, you would’ve already ordered a case…
 
Why tannat? Aside from the vast and unique contributions that Tannat (deemed the “healthy grape” due to high levels of antioxidants) adds to the blend, like robust character, intense fruit, spice and structure, winemaker Yannik Rousseau is from South West of France where the grape is widely grown.  Tannat on it’s own can often be gripping and powerful, but when blended with Bordeaux varietals, the power of the Tannat grape can be harnessed into something truly special.  This wine has that magic and it’s clear from the moment the wine splashes into your glass and the deep, fragrant perfume of ripe blackberry pie, roasted coffee, white pepper and dried flowers lets you know you’re going to like it…

It’s always all about the vineyard, and Bucher has attracted luminaries like Williams Selyem, Merry Edwards and Siduri to craft single-vineyard Pinot Noirs bearing their vineyard name. When a vineyard like this becomes a thing of legend, I always seek out wines produced by the Estate that owns and farms the land too.  Bucher’s Vineyard is extraordinarily special, located on Westside Road in Healdsburg, and originally planted in 1997 with the assistance of Bob Cabral, former winemaker at Williams Selyem.  Numerous high-scoring and memorable wines are rising from this site, and the 2014 Bucher Russian River Estate Pinot Noir is no exception.  Even at the winery’s $40 retail price, this is a wine worth hoarding…
 
Thoughtfully constructed from seven different blocks inside the Bucher Estate, and orchestrated from a labyrinth of revered Pinot Noir clones including Swan, Mt Eden, Pommard and Dijon, the 2014 Bucher exhibits the depth and complexity that you would expect from a high end Pinot Noir.  The wine was made by Pinot artist Adam Lee whom you might recognize from Siduri, and with just a handful of cases left of the 2014, don’t hesitate to secure yours.

The Ghost Block Vineyard lies adjacent to the Yountville cemetery, and legend has it that the ghost of George Yount, founder of Yountville haunts the cemetery on moon-lit nights… The historic family that owns the vineyard has been farming in Napa Valley since 1903, and has owned the Ghost Block parcel since 1930, yet producing the first vintage of Ghost Block in 2004.  Their 2017 Sauvignon Blanc from the MorgaenLee Vineyard in Yountville summons detailed tropical fruits, rock minerals, shaved coconut and supple cantaloupe.  The flavors are long, lingering, and unlike Yount’s ghost, they’re full of life.  The only thing scarier than the haunted cemetery is running out of this chillingly delicious Sauvignon Blanc.  
 
Ghost Block Sauvignon is aged 10 months Sur Lie, a french term meaning “on the sediment.”  This style of winemaking adds palpable levels of richness and body which meld perfectly with the Island fruits, minerals and firm acidity.  At our tasting, we were so captivated by the 2017 that it’s not only haunting the wine racks in our shop, but we’re pouring it by the glass in the tasting room.  Come by for a taste…

As much as I love the innovative and forward styles of New World GSM blends (Grenache/Syrah/Mourvedre), I’m equally drawn to the complexity, depth and character found in Old World GSM blends, which originated in the Rhone region in Southern France as early as 600BC.  With trials and tribulations that spanning hundreds of years, many of the best wines in the Old World give you that feeling of antiquity and historical relevance when you taste them.  That feeling rushed over me the moment I tasted Lavau’s 2014 Gigondas.  After all the family has been making wine for in the Rhone Valley for 5 generations…  At $29.99/btl this is a wonderful introduction into the magic of Gigondas.
 
The 2014 Lavau combines 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre co-fermented and aged in French Oak and vats for a full year before bottling.  Many consider Gigondas to be the little brother to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and the wines offer incredible value.  I highly recommend a case of Lavau…

What does it mean when a wine that we can offer at $17 earns Double Gold in the $24-$27.99 Pinot Noir Category at The San Francisco Chronicle Competition, which is the largest competition of American wines in the world?  In short, it means make some room in the cellar, because a Double Gold is equivalent to a unanimous rating by all of the judges.  All wines at the SF Chronicle competition are tasted blind, and wines that earn a gold medal are then tasted again the next day. I love seeing nice guys in the wine industry achieve success with their brand, and even more than watching their journey to success… I love tasting their wines.  When we first introduced Sailor’s Grave a few years ago, we knew we were onto something special. The wine went on to sell hundreds of cases over the next few vintages with continual re-orders and countless glowing comments. Truth-be-told the 2016 vintage is at an entirely new level and for a winemaker, this has got to be what success tastes like.  We taste a lot of wines, and last week was a particularly large tasting with over 100 wines. With origins in Yountville, Coombsville and Oakville, the 2016 was housed in oak barrels for 22 months.  In the glass the 2016 is incredibly hedonistic, with layers of rich and supple dark berries that are intermixed with black coffee, bay leaf, pipe tobacco and dark chocolate.  The finish is long and expansive and makes it impossible to resit diving in for another sip… another glass and another.

One of my favorite results that comes from tasting a new wine, is one that makes me do a double-take simply because the taste exceeds my expectations for the price.  The 2015 Fisticuffs Napa Valley Cabernet made me do just that.  Performing well above its weight class for value Napa Cabernet, this undisputed champion hailing from Napa Valley dances inside a tightly wound core, threaded with chocolate covered cherries, blackcurrants, unground coffee bean and cedar spice.

Sailing into their 2016 vintage,  Fortune1621 is a brand that’s become synonymous with value Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley.  With the Bump family at the helm, and a crew that include winemaker Brian Mox, who spent several vintages at Lewis Cellars, Fortune1621 is clearly a voyage worth taking. The 2016 is strikingly concentrated, yet poised and balanced with a layers of crushed black fruits, freshly roasted coffee beans, dried violets with hints of blueberries.

What’s all the hoopla about with this wine? Hoopla’s Napa Valley Red Blend “The Mutt” might be a mixed breed, but if you follow the lineage, I think you’ll find it’s from some doggone good stock…  After all, the producer Hoopes Ranch does own 35 acres in Oakville… They also produce Reds from Howell Mountain and The Muttis a cross-breed of barrels that didn’t go into Hoopes purebred bottlings that range $50-$100/btl…  On the palate the wine offers a lush coat of smooth dark berries and slightly dusty tannins, intertwined with spice box, subtle cigar, and absolutely no bite.  At $23/btl it might just become man’s second best friend…
 
This delicious crossbreed combines Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and was harnessed in oak barrels for 18 months. This lively offering is now calming and comforting with layers of fruit, intertwined with subtle spices, un-sweetened blackberry pie filling, plum and toasty oak.  Don’t let this one escape…
