2018 Jaclynn Renee Pinot Noir Russian River Valley
One of California’s most prized Vineyards, Bacigalupi consistently produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of outstanding and memorable quality. The Vineyard played a crucial role at the 1976 Judgement of Paris when Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, sourced from Bacigalupi, took 1st place, permanently binding California to the premium-quality world wine map.

Winemaker Jackie Van Sant Downes of Jacklynn Rennee Winery is a hardworking, native Texan who moved to Sonoma in 2007 to pursue her passion for making balanced wines that shine with pure fruit. In this wine, she highlights a complementary balance between Pinot Noir clones Pommard and Wente, enchanting your taste buds with ripe red cherries, forest floor, and vanilla spice.

SONOMA COAST

2019 Red Car Chardonnay Sonoma Coast
Built from a collection of coastal vineyards, Red Car’s 2016 Chardonnay is tuned with fruit from Kent Ritchie’s Vineyard, which has an epic history of producing some of California’s most distinguished Chardonnays. This wine gains additional complexity from Red Car Estate, Zephyr Farms, Manchester Ridge, and Hawk Hill Vineyards, crossing the finish line with clarity, balance, and delicate textures.

Red Car parks their Sonoma Coast Chardonnay in primarily neutral oak barrels, creating a racy, fresh, inviting wine, and time in the bottle has increased richness and made the fruit softer and more supple, resulting in a wine that’s a joy ride to drink right now.

“2019 Sailor’s Grave Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has fresh, bright fruit aromas of black cherries and black currants, accented with chai tea and vanilla extract. On the palate, the wine is bursting with juicy, ripe plums and blackberries, balanced with a rich cocoa finish. The wine’s firm tannic structure and concentration of flavors suggest that it can age for a few years, but it’s also pleasantly approachable and more than easy to drink now as well.”

2019 PINOT NOIR
COAST GRADE VINEYARD
SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS

2019 Martin Ray Pinot Noir Coast Grade Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains
Martin Ray’s winemaking is Burgundian-influenced, focused on single varietal wines representative of their terroir. Courtney Benham, the owner of Martin Ray, selected the Coast Grade Vineyard on the ocean side of the Santa Cruz Mountains for the cooling effects of the morning and evening fog from the San Francisco Bay and the vineyard’s ability to produce Pinot Noir with exceptional clarity, focus and natural acidity.

Delicately refined, Pinot Noir grown along the Santa Cruz Mountains benefits from coastal fog and cooler temperatures preserving the natural acidity allowing the grapes to ripen slowly, producing fresher fruit character. The Coast Grade Vineyard’s steeply sloped terroir near the Pacific Ocean gives a seashell-like salinity and a distinct earthiness that marries perfectly with the fruit for a heightened balance and regional typicality.

2020 Domaines Ott By. Ott Provence Rose
A benchmark in style, Domaines Ott is one of the top rosé producers globally and acts as a reference standard in its category, setting the highest bar for quality. Provence, the oldest vineyard land in mainland France, has for the last 2600 years been primarily focused on crafting fruity, focused, dry rosés with a delicate color but a deep concentration of red fruit flavors and backbone of minerality.

Setting out to produce the finest examples of Provençal wines crafted from noble grape varieties, Marcel Ott discovered the Estate which would become Domains Ott in 1896. Today, cousins Christian and Jean-François Ott continue with the same dedication, creating classic and refreshing rosé blends, setting timeless precedence of quality.

2017 Baldacci Elizabeth Pinot Noir Carneros
Marked with concentrated fruit, intriguing textures, and a palpable sense of place, Baldacci’s Carneros Pinot Noir authoritatively expresses many of the region’s best attributes. The wine arose from Baldacci’s Estate Vineyard in Carneros, farmed by Josh Clark, one of wine country’s most sought after viticulturists whose clients include icons like Outpost, Hourglass, and Kinsella, to list a few. At this price, it truly shouldn’t be missed.

Michael Baldacci works closely with Ricardo Herrera to craft balanced wines with a sense of place and tangible value. Ricardo gained invaluable experience over the years at icons Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Dominus, and Screaming Eagle.

The Baldacci team is steadfast in producing wines that tell a story of their origins and vintage. They achieve this through highly skilled vineyard management, top-level winemaking, and timely choices made during each step along the way. The results speak for themselves, and at this price, a single case may not be enough.

“Our motto is no whimpy Pinot Noir! I approach this varietal as a lighter, yet sturdy red wine from our portfolio. We work towards a balanced fruit load, per vine, in the vineyard. We use our clones to create nuance and texture in the final wine… We strive for a fruit forward expression that is more dark rather than red berry. We de-stem everything and cold soak for no more than 3 days to achieve a color and tannin profile that is more structured. Everything is fermented in open top, small volume tanks with daily punch downs until dry. We use 40% new French oak to marry our fruit with the spice from the wood.”

2018 PROPRIETARY RED

2018 Vista Atlas Peak Reserve Proprietary Red
Cementing its spot on my top 5 list in 2020, Vista’s 2018 Atlas Peak Red is the single most extraordinary $23 wine that I’ve tasted. The wine has the concentration, depth, complexity, and balance that you’d expect from a remarkable $50 bottle of high-elevation Napa wine, but at $23, it’s hard to wrap your head around how it can be that good, for the modest price.

At 2,000 feet elevation on Atlas Peak, Vista’s 2018 Reserve Blend was wrought from the rocky red Aiken soils and perfectly shows off the deep, concentrated flavors that make this region famous. Predominately Cabernet Sauvignon, balanced with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, if you’re looking for a wine that tastes like it should be at least double or triple the price, this is it.

Thoughtfully uniting earth, elements, and California fruit, Yannick Rousseau captures the spirit of his homeland of Gascony, France, attuned with American winemaking freedom. Calling on Tannat’s intense color and firm structure, elevated by additions of Bordeaux Varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec, Rousseau utilizes a gentle hand, sharp nose, and keen taste, creating something truly unique, and offering tremendous value.

Deemed the “healthy grape” due to high antioxidants, Tannat is a grape varietal native to Southern France, revered for power, robust character, intense fruit, spice, and structure.

Harnessing Tannat’s muscle by skillfully blending softer Bordeaux varieties, Yannik Rousseau ages this wine for 18 months in barrel, revealing layers of elegance, character, and elements of intrigue.

“Deep black cherry in appearance. Bright, complex, generous and profound with notes of baked blackberry pie, dry sage, white pepper, licorice, medium roast coffee, forest floor and subtle French oak. Supple attack, delicate roundness, full-bodied, offering sweet spices, pure dark berries, silky tannins and fresh long finish. It’s an unmistakable California resident…rich, juicy and a youthful vibe…but this one doesn’t forget its french heritage and its ‘je ne sais quoi’.”

DOMAINE MAISON

2019 CHEVERNY ROUGE
LOIRE VALLEY

2019 Domaine Maison Cheverny Rogue Loire Valley
Pinot Noir/Gamay blends from Cheverny offer remarkable value and are relished by the French locals because they possess vibrant red fruit, crisp acidy, palpable minerality, and energizing freshness. Burgundy and the Atlantic Ocean influence Cheverny, a small region in the Loire Valley with siliceous clay, limestone, and gravelly soils, well-suited for Burgundian grapes that produce supple fruit with gentle tannins and vibrant energy. Cheverny Reds are primarily Pinot Noir/Gamay blends, with up to 10% Cabernet Franc or Malbec, known locally as Côt.

Domaine Maison’s Cheverny Rouge is a classic representation, combining 60% Pinot Noir with 30% Gamay with 10% Côt, balancing bright, supple fruit, floral character, and minerality, with vibrant energy, depth, and focus. This bottling is very typical for what the French locals might drink at a local Bistro, great wine that is an exceptional value.

Located between two rivers, Loire and Cher, the Domain Maison’s plots consist of vines between 20 and 45-years-old, grown in clay-limestone and light gravel soils, that produce focused fruit with depth and a sense of place. The team fermented this wine in stainless steel to preserve the fruit’s natural essence, beautifully delivered into your glass.

“Red wines of the Loire Valley are known for their brightness and vivacity. Cheverny AOC, located within the Touraine district, is planted mainly with Pinot Noir. This blend in particular is comprised of 60 percent Pinot Noir, 30 percent Gamay, and 10 percent Côt, the local name for Malbec. The region’s fruit ripens beautifully leading to wines with juicy, red cherry and raspberry flavors with great depth and concentration. Sweet spice notes, such as cloves and cinnamon, add an additional layer of complexity to the wine followed by a lush and silky finish. The locals enjoy this easy-drinking wine just a tad below room temperature, making it a perfect wine for the summer. Even at a fantastic value, the most surprising aspect of this wine is how quickly you’ll need another glass.”
