2021 White Lane 1005 Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena

Certain wines emerge unexpectedly, while others seem fated to cross our paths. The 2021 White Lane 1005 St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon belongs to the latter group—a remarkable find and among the most captivating revelations of the year. With a mere 76 cases crafted, its scarcity matches its allure, drawn from a vineyard quietly nestled along unassuming White Lane near V. Sattui Winery. Once a closely guarded treasure, savored solely by family and trusted companions, it now opens its doors—but only to a fortunate handful.

This Cabernet Sauvignon portrays a vivid expression of its grape, reflecting all that distinguishes the 2021 vintage—a season Wine Spectator praises for shaping Napa’s contemporary character, where freshness, vibrancy, and power align with striking precision. From the initial taste, it reveals itself with lucidity, effortlessly weaving richness with vibrancy while echoing the deep-rooted heritage of St. Helena’s landscape.

Matured for 37 months in neutral oak, it strikes a balance of authority and grace, unveiling a tapestry of lush dark fruit, smooth tannins, and a sophistication that resonates long after the glass is empty. Through careful cultivation and an exceptional year, something rare and distinctive has emerged—a wine once hidden, now poised for discovery.

Ovid’s 2021 Napa Valley Red captures the majestic allure of Pritchard Hill, a terroir renowned for its ability to yield wines of exceptional quality, as evidenced by two prestigious 100-point scores. “Moving to the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and the balanced 7% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Insanely pure, it offers kaleidoscope-like aromatics of black and blue fruits, spring flowers, chocolate, burning embers, and bouquet garni. Full-bodied on the palate, it doesn’t get any better, and it’s concentrated, has building tannins, and a monster of a finish. Offering more generosity and opulence than just about every other wine in the vintage, this is a killer bottle of wine! It will make your eyes roll back in your head today, yet will ideally be given 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve gracefully over the following two decades. Bravo!”

“The exotically perfumed 2019 Grenache is—at least for the moment—a one-off effort, as the protective purchaser backed out of their contract, leaving the grapes to Scarlett and winemaker Mike Smith. Made with 50% whole clusters from head-trained vines planted in 2010, this is floral, and spicy—a veritable potpourri on the nose, backed by ripe cherries. Full-bodied and supple, this is just great stuff, which shows no sign of its considerable alcohol (16+%). 150 cases produced. For the price, the quality is off the charts.”

2022 Thistle & Thorn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Exceptional wines often emerge from careful intent, yet occasionally, they owe their existence to the whims of chance. The tale of Thistle & Thorn unfolds as a fortunate twist of fate—a wine that almost slipped through the cracks. When a coveted batch of Napa Valley grapes found itself without a home, winemaker Blair Guthrie faced a pivotal decision: let the fruit wither on the vine or embrace the opportunity to shape something remarkable. Guided by intuition, he chose to act.

Blair Guthrie’s path is as captivating as the bottles he produces. Hailing from Christchurch, New Zealand, he pursued the study of enology and viticulture with a steady resolve that would eventually lead him across continents. His formative years under the tutelage of Paul Hobbs refined a winemaking approach centered on the purity of fruit, harmonic balance, and a vivid sense of origin.

Drawn from the organically tended Juliana Vineyard, this wine embodies Napa Valley’s finest qualities. It unfolds with rich, dark fruit, finely woven tannins, and a poised intricacy that elevates its allure—an inviting portrait of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, born not by chance but from the vision of a winemaker who recognized possibility amid uncertainty.
