2021 Le Pich Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Le Pich Cabernet Sauvignon captures the essence of Napa Valley, infused with the refined touch of French winemaking. At the heart of this small-batch winery lies Julien Fayard, a visionary winemaker shaped by his Provençal roots and honed at the legendary Châteaux Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Lafitte.

After a distinguished career as Director of Winemaking under Philippe Melka, crafting wines for iconic labels like Lail, Gemstone, Mastery, and Hundred Acre, Fayard embarked on his own journey with Le Pich. His meticulous approach to winemaking is rooted in a deep understanding of Napa Valley’s premier vineyards. By sourcing from exceptional sites, he balances the New World’s opulent fruit with the Old World’s elegant restraint.

Crafted at a state-of-the-art winery, the 2021 Le Pich Cabernet Sauvignon is a testament to Fayard’s unwavering commitment to quality. Every step of the winemaking process, from vineyard to bottle, is overseen with meticulous care. The result is a wine that embodies the timeless allure of Napa Valley Cabernet, reimagined for the modern palate.

“The 2021 Le Pich Cabernet Sauvignon is a stunning expression of Napa Valley’s finest. A deep, inky hue precedes a captivating nose of ripe blackberries, black currants, and blueberry compote, all interwoven with delicate floral notes of violets and a subtle waft of elegant vanilla. On the palate, the wine unfolds with rich, velvety tannins and a core of concentrated black cherry and cassis flavors. The fruit is both penetrating and opulent, showcasing the ripe, juicy character of the vintage. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a lingering impression of dark fruit and a touch of spice. This is a wine of exceptional quality and balance, offering a truly memorable drinking experience, as usual for this wine.”

With over two decades of winemaking experience, Julien Fayard has earned respect among winemakers in Napa Valley. He began in his family’s Provençal winery, then spent valuable time in Bordeaux at Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte. After relocating to Napa Valley, Julien worked as the Director of Winemaking for Philippe Melka and currently oversees small boutique wineries, including Beau Vigne, combining his elegant French winemaking style with bold California elements.

The Beau Vigne Romeo Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is a charming blend of premier vineyards in Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena that’s impossible not to love. Beau Vigne’s limited production is a prize to behold, especially in exceptional vintages such as 2018 that will continue to deliver with an elegant demeanor and complementary depth.

“Dark chocolate cherry and roasted coffee intensity glides in on a sleek mouthfeel. Seductive notes of blackberry and licorice rise up to a massive shouldered – yet balanced – red. In his youth, Romeo is cloaked in dark violet flowers that bloom as the wine opens up.”

With over two decades of experience, Julien Fayard began making wine at his family’s winery in Provence, then spent valuable time in Bordeaux at Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, and ultimately relocated to Napa Valley. Julien worked as the Director of Winemaking for Philippe Melka and now oversees small projects of his own, including Beau Vigne, whose signature style centers on Atlas Peak’s bold, multidimensional mountain fruit and Julien’s French finesse.

Just like Juliet Capulet from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, my first impression of this wine is soft-spoken and shy, setting the stage for escalating depth of character and intensity that develops into a powerful, independent core. Beau Vigne proudly produces only a few thousand cases per year, and the 2018 vintage is quickly becoming prized for its delicate complexity that will continue to develop for years to come.

“…Juliet is a savory beauty romanced by a sonnet of cigar leaf, black pepper, and sandalwood. Plummy flavors cling to dry, chalky tannins, delivering a complex mouthfeel as notes of soy sauce and dark cherry paint the palate.”

2018 Recoltant Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

It feels great to be on the leading edge of a new brand that’s destined to make an impact in the competitive $40 Napa Cabernet category. Recoltant is the younger brother to Le Pich and Purlieu, and the wine is produced by Julien Fayard, who is absolutely at the top of his game…

Recoltant is a collaboration of declassified barrels of premium Cabernet that didn’t quite fit into Le Pich or Purlieu. The final blend was stitched together from several celebrated regions throughout Napa Valley, and Julian made the wine with the same standards of excellence that he practices in all of his projects.

Julien Fayard learned his craft at Chateau Lafite Rothschild, before gaining even more valuable experience as Director of Winemaking for Philippe Melka at elite Napa Valley producers like Lail, Gemstone, Hundred Acre, and Mastery. The result is so great at this price that you really have to try it.

“The Recoltant Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 mimics sibling wines Purlieu and Le Pich in many ways. It is inky black in color, with a nose of mixed black berries, black currants, glove leather, and rose petal. On the palate, the wine is deep and rich with flavors of blackberry cobbler, kitchen spice, and grandma’s pie crust combined with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. Winemaker Julian Fayard’s genius shines through because even with all of these powerful characteristics, this wine is not the least bit cloying or overly heavy.”  94 Points
