2015 NAPA VALLEY

2015 Fortune 1621 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Fortune refers to chance or luck and the new 2015 Fortune 1621 at under thirty will have you experiencing both… Chance is finding a superb Napa Valley Cab that’s both concentrated, deep and long, and available in this favorable price range.  Luck is the way you feel the moment this wine touches your lips, giving off a strong feeling of contentment from getting something extra…  Revealing concentrated black fruits threaded together with crushed rock, espresso roast and violets, this absolutely classic Napa Cab was authored by Brian Mox, who spent several vintages at Lewis Cellars and he’s also the current winemaker at Laird.

Blossoming more from 18 months in French and American oak barrels, the 2015 arose from multiple carefully chosen vineyards throughout Napa Valley, each selected for their individual characteristics which contribute to the final blend.  The 2015 is marked by a dense, concentrated core that’s rarely found at this price…  This is one value-driven Napa Cab that I absolutely recommend.

2014 Laird Phantom Ranch Pinot Noir
Have you ever wondered what makes Pinot Noir so complex?  Did you know that not all Pinot Noir Vines are the same?  Laird’s Phantom Ranch Pinot is a 50/50 blend of two distinctly different Pinot Noir clones.  Clone 115 comes from Morey St Denis, one of Burgundy’s noble areas and is known for producing elegant wines.  The Pommard Clone which also comes from Burgundy is revered for lending structure and meaty characters as well as remarkable fragrance.  Paul Hobbs selected both of these clones for Laird’s Phantom Ranch Vineyard to create a wine with the perfect combination of structure, elegance and aroma.  This is a Pinot Noir that will haunt your dreams…
Composed in a chillingly deep, velvety style that I love, and we don’t have anything else quite like it on our tasting menu in Yountville…  Laird’s 2014 Phantom Ranch is haunted by spine-tingling allure, laced with shades of wild blueberries, spring flowers, vanilla and spices. The winery has always attracted terrific winemakers.  In 2014, Laird’s Consulting Winemaker was Paul Hobbs, one of the top winemakers in the world… If you enjoy full-bodied, deep, velvety Pinots, I strongly recommend a case of this limited release.

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate: “The 2014 Pinot Noir Phantom Ranch has a more evolved nose of forest floor and spice, raw, generous almost opulent black cherry and strawberry fruit, a healthy, pure mouthfeel and a long finish. This is serious Pinot to drink over then next 7-8 years.” 90 Points

We’ve introduced several single vineyard Cabernets from Humanitas, and each one has perfectly expressed it’s individual origin in vivid detail.  One thing they’ve clearly had in common is their irrefutable quality… We couldn’t wait to introduce the new Piscis Vineyard, which stands out for it’s seductive and sultry qualities and round, supple mouthfeel.  Loaded with alluring dark fruits, chocolatey expresso, creme de cassis and dried violets, this 2013 puts it all out there.  At $65/btl retail, this wine truly has it all…when you visit our website you’ll want all you can get…

Tasting Notes: “An explosive nose that exudes chocolate covered cherries, aged tobacco leaf, dried flowers and hints of sweet vanilla.  On approach, the lush, deep, black fruits wrap your palate in a balanced elegance that is rich and opulent, yet remains fresh and lively at the same time.  Then cocoa powder dusted blueberries emerge, along with cherry jolly rancher candy which weigh in perfectly against the slightly dusty tannins which trail off into a long, mouth quenching finish.  Drink now through 2020.”

Both Montafi Ranch and DuPratt Vineyard perfectly delineate the magnificent complexity and depth that can only be achieved through heritage vines.  One small swirl of the glass unleashes an intoxicating bouquet of remarkably intense, detailed fruits laced with abundant complexity.  Crafted in a deep, penetrating style that’s incredibly hedonistic and remarkably balanced, I highly recommend trying both…

Tasting Notes:Medium-dark to dark garnet-ruby. Aromas of red cherry, pomegranate, and underbrush gain strength with air. Quite juicy and succulent, flavors of red fruits and subtle vanilla notes are lifted by zesty minerality. 2015 B Sharp Napa Valley Proprietary Red by Singer Cellars
In many cases, undiscovered wines offer an amazing value, because they’re still unestablished brands.  B. Sharp’s 2015 Propriety Blend proves that theory offering a harmony of crushed red fruits, mineral laced cherry, wilted violets, exotic spices, and cocoa dusted blackberry.  With the price of Napa Valley fruit rising higher than the north end of a soprano’s range, it’s always music to my ears anytime we come across a killer Napa Valley Cabernet Blend.  At the wine’s $45 retail price you’ll want to bring all your friends to the show…and you’re going to want season tickets.
Like the fine tuning of an instrument, this one harmonized for 20 months in French oak barrels and now is beautifully layered with a crescendoing blend, led by 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and scaled with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot.  Primarily sourced from Napa Valley’s revered Coombsville AVA, this wine reveals abundant intensity, stunning concentration and an impressively long finish. This show stopper and with a total production of only around 60 cases will bring down the house…

2014 Orrin-Sage Sonoma Mountains Pinot Noir
Anytime a new customer walks into our shop in Yountville, they’re always surprised by the number of great Pinot Noirs that we feature.  Our roots go back more than 2 decades in Sonoma County, where outside of Burgundy, Pinot Noir reigns king… Over the years we’ve discovered some truly stunning Pinots that have delivered exceptional quality and value with characteristics classic to the varietal.  Orrin-Sage just set a new bar…This is truly the best Pinot at this price that we’ve ever featured, and with 6 barrels produced, don’t wait…
Arising from the rugged Sonoma Mountain AVA, a unique area which gains some of the cooling influence from the Petaluma Gap and produces brilliant Pinot Noir fruit.  Bevan, Siduri and Flowers are just a few of the wineries that have crafted Pinots from this unique area. This wine was expertly made by Justin Harmon who gained valuable experience as an intern under Russell Bevan.  It has an undeniable meaty character coupled with remarkable weight and perfect balance making it a wine that I truly can’t get enough of…

2013 Mount Eden Estate Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
Outside of Napa and Sonoma, there’s really only one other California wine region that comes to mind for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon…  The Santa Cruz Mountains is home to the iconic Ridge Monte Bello Vineyard as well as Mount Eden Estate, which have both produced countless high 90’s rated wines, competing with many of the best wines in Napa Valley.  Founded in 1945, the historic Mount Eden Estate Vineyard is perched at 2,000 feet elevation and produces fruit of remarkable detail and stunning complexity.  Their 2013 Estate Cabernet has already earned three 94-95 point scores and it was absolutely rocking when we tasted it last week….
Created in a style that perfectly balances all the elements necessary to age gracefully for 40 years, and yet it will also knock your socks off if you enjoy it this week.  The Estate Cabernet Vineyard yields just 1.5 tons of fruit per acre, producing a wine of unparalleled complexity and definition.  Kept for 23 months in barrel, the 2013 has reaped the rewards of around 2 1/2 years in the bottle and it’s brilliant right now…

SPRING MOUNTAIN DISTRICT

2012 Anantaah Bella's Blend Proprietary Red
From a mountainous area where the bottle prices are generally as steep as the terrain, it’s extremely rare to come across a killer Bordeaux Style Blend at under $80/btl.  Anantaah’s 2012 Bella’s Blend lassoed my brain and refused to let go… Created in a rich, layered style, unfurling decadent blue and black fruits, chocolate covered plum and savory spices.  The winery produces less than 500 cases a year, between all of their wines and there’s simply never enough of this wine to match demand. Words can hardly express how great this 2012 is drinking…

Originating from the Madrone Vineyard located at 1,900 feet in elevation, this deep, velvety Red possesses a multitude of layers and remarkable balance.  Perpetually changing and evolving in the glass, layer after layer of impeccably well-balanced flavors coat your palate in an abundance of dark fruits and sweet, velvety tannins.  Aged for nearly two full years in barrels and now with around 3 1/2 years of development in the bottle, this wine is gorgeous right now and has the structure to go another decade.

The 2014s also look sensational… This wine has great fruit, an opaque purple color, beautiful crème de cassis, blueberry and floral notes in a sexy, opulent, forward style that will be more flattering and flamboyant than its 2013 counterpart, at least in its youth.”
